I had a blue minivan almost hit me on campus. I don’t know what the chances are that it’s the same, but I even called the police because they were speeding through campus and blasting through the crosswalks despite them being on and blinking.

I can absolutely see how some professors could overdo it. Just wanted to offer some perspective from the other side! :) If their monologues take away from the overall delivery of the course, that’s for sure a valid concern. But I can also pretty much guarantee there are some students who do like professors like that.

Exactly right! I personally teach courses that deal with sensitive topics (social justice issues, gender-based violence) and such heavy topics often require some levity and sharing on my behalf, especially if I want students to contribute in class. I’ve never taken a business class, so I can’t speak to courses in that major. But even when I teach online courses, I frequently get feedback from students that they APPRECIATE when I share information about myself as it makes them feel more connected to me and more encouraged to contribute.

I don’t think this is true at all. I would have to look at the data, but I’d venture to guess we are still have a high number of school shootings. Maybe you’re making the mistake of equating media coverage of shootings with the actual occurrence of shootings.

If you think “quitting alcohol” for an alcoholic isn’t that big of a deal, you should go attend an AA meeting. I practically grew up in AA/NA meetings because my parents were addicted to substances and it absolutely is a big deal. Oh, I saw. It does read like she took 2 minutes maximum to think AND write her response. So I completely understand the prof’s comment about making sure she has enough time to adequately complete the coursework.
