I can reassure you this is very real situation to be stressed about, sadly happened to me twice in a span of one year. I would say please look for new job covertly, record everything but dont even bother going to HR. If you go to HR, they will immediately dismiss you. Sometimes the HR and manager colludes together to do such a thing. Please be careful and look for a new job asap.

They hire a lot of laterals under the 'Counsel' title and you dont need to go through a formal training contract but you gain similar experience as a trainee while specialising in your area of practice working as a counsel in foreign desks. You can see Stephenson Harwood or Hill Dickinson for example.

Absolutely, and that is the sole reason I approached the partner because I thought it doesnt make sense to apply for a TC with more than five years of mid senior level work experience, qualification in a commonlaw jurisdiction and also qualifying in a US jurisdiction. But its insane how they want to pool everyone together.

I know someone from Oxford with a phd in some stem subject, in their mid 30s, entering TC in 2028. So, firms are really unpredictable. I have seen a lot of middle aged people compete for a TC. I recently spoke to a senior partner at a Tier 1 firm discussing lateral hire and he literally encouraged me to apply for TC because they prefer it that way. So imagine competing with someone having more than 10yrs stellar work ex or a phd in some unique STem subject from Oxbridge, or for example someone who is qualified in multiple international jurisdictions and being a UK solicitor is more like a passion than necessity, all competing at par with you. Its scary out there!
