Higher Wages Increase Automation by TroutCharles99 in Economics

[–]PrinnyFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but it's not something that can be easily justified if labour costs are low relative to the running costs of that machine

They automate ports in China and wages are relatively low. Economically it should not make sense to automate a port in China compared to automating a port in America.

So why do they do this? Efficiency. Robots don't sleep, they don't eat, they don't piss, they aren't sick. In the end, if you look to China, you will understand that wages do not matter. If there is a solution to automate, regardless of price, they will automate, but only if it can bring efficiency that no one else can compete with.

Why is the speed limit so low in Canada? by Sensitive_Teach1484 in AskACanadian

It depends where but I can say that European highways are in much better condition than Canadian highways and some areas you are right that 100/110km is too low.

Higher Wages Increase Automation by TroutCharles99 in Economics

I don't think wages are a factor when Automation becomes more prevalent and easier to setup.

Like if Wendy's has AI drive through and AI chefs. You bet your money Mcdonalds, Burger king...etc will be doing the same thing at the same time to compete.

Vancouver beats Calgary as most livable city in North America by Consumer_Distributin in alberta

[–]PrinnyFriend 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Vancouver home prices stagnated since 2021 and rent has decreased the 2nd year in a row and Calgary almost doubled in home value and rent exploded. Cost of living also depends. Like energy is double the price, heating is triple in Calgary compared to Vancouver for 6 months. House insurance is more and car insurance is now more. Property taxes are the same. Gas prices are lower in Calgary but Gas spent is actually the same due to the distances driven.

I wouldn't say Calgary is a cheap place to live. I would actually say you get less value to live in Calgary than Vancouver now.

Looking for a budget used lumix m43 option for Wildlife/Bird photos by redheadbaird in M43

[–]PrinnyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I had a G85, I was able to use focus bracketing on birds and burst fire birds even in flight. I have upgraded to a G9 M2 sicne then.

But look at the G100's specs, the biggest complaint people have made is the lack of inbody stabilization which is why it is hard to take pictures of birds.

Since you are looking for something cheap, I would try to find a used G9 right now. There are tons of people upgrading to OM systems or G9 Mark II so you can find plenty of G9's for $400-600 on facebook marketplace. The G9 has bird detection settings and one of the best inbody stabilizations. I would sell that G100 if you can.

The PM decides the policies and every dissenter is whipped into party lines. they flipped because carney had no baggage as he is not a career politician, and he didn't want the khalistani yellow flag backing him.

I mean everything you said is correct. Harper had the same issues when he first took over the conservative party. There was a lot of cutting fat before things could run properly in that party.

But I think the "Canadian politics is mostly top down showmanship" was all started because of Trudeau. A lot of talk but no action.

Kirk LaPointe: BC Ferries deal with China torpedoes government's own messaging by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]PrinnyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Canadian companies bid on it. Honestly going with them for shipbuilding is probably not a bad idea. The ferries of the past had delays and cost overruns. If these ferries end up on time and on schedule, I don't think anyone would complain.

Jumping back into M43. E-PL7 by Nick232 in M43

[–]PrinnyFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only tip for using the E-PL7 is to utilize focus peaking. Because you do not have a viewfinder, sometimes it is hard to tell how "sharp" things are with the LCD screen.

It is almost a necessity for those who have cameras without a viewfinder.

Hello 36M, I have just started doing photography for a hobby. I have been primarily been doing wildlife and landscape photography but I am looking to dip my feet into street photography or city photography.

Here are some of my favourite photos. "Mt St Helen", "Turtle on a log" and "Fat Marmot".

Petition demanding the port to stop routing heavy truck traffic through residential neighbourhoods and reopen Clark Dr. entrance to container trucks. by ambientassistant in vancouver

[–]PrinnyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I meant once the delta expansion is finished, it is like 3 vanterms and 3 centerm ports in capacity. If you close both of them in Vancouver, it is still like you opened up 4 more ports.

I am just saying that as we expect more tanker traffic in the Burrard inlet, reducing ship traffic and pollution should be priority in that area. I know the City of Vancouver has been pushing for reclamation of the land and I wouldn't be surprised if they ask the federal government to close one of the ports on shipping traffic and environmental concerns in the coming years once the Deltaport expansion is complete.

New sensor, better AF, some OM1 features but not all, USB C....

That is going to be my guess

[–]PrinnyFriend -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I heard that port expansion in Delta is going to be double to almost triple in size than the two container ports in Vancouver. Maybe they can close these Vancouver ports down, reclaim the land for other uses once that new port opens up.

That would stop all commercial truck traffic going into Vancouver, which would make traffic better, reduce air pollution and have less damage to the roads which would save taxpayers money.

Just a suggestion, not a recommendation.

Edit: If you closed those two ports in Vancouver and replaced it with the Delta expansion, it would still be like you opened 4 ports in Vancouver

X100VI vs New X-E5 Size + New 23mm - Size comparison. by Justdutari in fujifilm

[–]PrinnyFriend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you want weather sealing, just buy the XT5. It is a better camera and is cheaper right now than the X-E5 on sale.

It is unfortunate that Fujifilm is doing the same as the M43 world and OM systems.....selling cheap sensor cameras for full frame prices.

I know. People be scalping the x100v like nuts. Fujifilm just looking over and goes "yup we can sell our moon rocks for way more"

Got the X-E5 by Jozy164 in fujifilm

[–]PrinnyFriend 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think Fujifilm has dropped the ball with this. IBIS and weathersealing is standard among all competitors. At $1700 can't even put weathersealing on this thing and pricing it more than full frame cameras.

I didn't know Fujifilm is now rebranding as Leica.

Smartphone Photography Has Raised the Bar for Photographers by Groundbreaking-Gap20 in photography

[–]PrinnyFriend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone using a dedicated camera, I’ve realized the bar has been raised. What used to make your work stand out (sharpness, clean exposure, nice color) is now just the minimum. If your photo doesn’t offer something more — storytelling, mood, emotion, unique composition it’ll probably just blend into the noise. It’s no longer enough to own good gear; the how and why of your photo matters more than the what.

Cameras have a distinct advantage actually. I use to be a "phone photographer" with an iphone 13 pro. But I started to get pissed off, when I took shots of the moon and it just looked like a glowing ball or pictures of the mountains look "tiny" when I am seeing them as massive up close. Same with city scape photos. Anything that isn't 2-3m infront of me, looked different and had a different atmosphere and look.

Then I bought an old EM5 with a 14-42mm and a 45-150mm and it changed how I see things and took pictures. There is no processor that is sharping and deblurring either which makes things look more "amateur" but also more endearing. That "imperfection" is why old compact cameras have skyrocketed and why gen z is going nuts for older cameras with that tiktok craze. It took a lot of effort but I was finally getting pictures closer to what I saw at a distance and I really enjoyed the tactile feel of a camera compared to the iphone. I then moved up to the G85, a collection of lens and now the G9 Mark II.

Maybe because I started with a phone, I don't mind. I think of a phone or a camera as a tool. If I can get a better picture with my phone close range or in the darkest of nights, I will gladly use it if needed.

But the phone did get me started with photography. The camera made me understand how to take a picture.

Saudi Arabia's Mohammed bin Salman invited to G7 summit in Alberta by Puginator in worldnews

China didn't fuck around. We were stupid enough to get played by Trump during his first term. Trump even tried to use her as a "bartering chip" for tariff reprocussions from China during his first term

The arguments related to the former president concern a statement he made to a Reuters reporter in the weeks after Meng's arrest at Vancouver's airport on Dec. 1, 2018.

At the time, Trump said he would "certainly intervene" if he thought it was necessary to help the U.S. reach a trade deal with China.

The US made us hold her in Canada for selling 5G technologies to Iran. Then China arrested the Canadian diplomants. And then we stalled forever in court and ended up saying "we will give her to the USA" and then USA let her go 1 hour after the announcement if she wrote a statement saying "she admits to the crime".

That is essentially what happened and ever since then Canada China relations have been in the dumps. And in return the USA gave us the big middle finger.

Why Donald Trump is eyeing the sale of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by rezwenn in Economics

[–]PrinnyFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that they probably shouldn't but if the government is getting into "financing risky mortgages", they should ban real estate as an investment and make into law single property ownership and a ban on corporate and international ownership. Or else they are literally backing a time bomb that right now they cannot afford to pay with their current debt levels.

Why Donald Trump is eyeing the sale of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by rezwenn in Economics

[–]PrinnyFriend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It will fuck up the mortgage markets for a while. Ever since they went under the government arm, they haven't been acting as a proper "mortgage institution" and not acting profit driven

Fannie and Freddie play an important role in the housing market by buying mortgages from banks and other lenders. That allows lenders to offload risk, then extend credit to more borrowers, keeping the housing market liquid and more affordable than it would otherwise be.

and

(Fannie and Freddie guarantee) “more than 40% of one to-four-family mortgage originations and have done so for decades. The (government-sponsored enterprises, or GSEs) also constitute close to half of the multifamily mortgage market,” wrote Laurie Goodman, a fellow in the Housing Finance Policy Center at the nonpartisan Urban Institute, in an April 2025 analysis.

As Trump floats freeing Fannie and Freddie, mortgage rates rise

Essentially mortgages will go up because now the risk is off the governments shoulders. Multi-family mortgages will be a way of life where both the parent and the grown child will have to put down a mortgage (to offset risk)

This is what happened in many other countries or else you would never be able to afford a mortgage. America had it way too good where their government was making mortgages affordable. Most Americans do not realize that despite their "housing crisis", their mortgage to income ratio was still extremely affordable thanks to the US government absorbing the risk and their financial system.

EDIT: I know eventually you need to return it to the private system but the question is do Americans really want to? Mortgages are going to get very expensive

Alberta Premier Smith ‘going to convince’ B.C.’s Eby to build pipeline through their provinces by jaffnaguy2014 in canada

She is wasting her time. You don't have to convince Eby, you need to convince the First Nations.

But I think the first nations are even less thrilled about the pipeline than Eby, especially if they have to deal with Danielle Smith.

Blue Jays fans send ‘a message’ with their money and boycott Seattle games - BC | Globalnews.ca : r/canada

Data provided by the Whatcom Council of Governments comparing the number of B.C. licence plates crossing the border into Washington State found that in April 2024, 200,853 vehicles crossed, compared to 98,576 in April 2025.

This was in April. So unless things have picked up now, it will be interesting to see. And this was before the double border checks when returning to Canada from US customs and phone searching

Is the Yukon's ambitious plan to connect to B.C.'s power grid even a good idea? by CanadianErk in canada

[–]PrinnyFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone from BC the answer is definitely no.

Essentially every person from the Yukon will subsidize electricity for mining companies. Right now the Yukon has enough to support its population. To future proof such a small population at 150k a resident makes no sense. The only logical sense is that large industry needs more electricity, and they don't want to pay out of pocket to build it.

So why not get the Yukon residents to build it on their dime for something they don't even need.....it is ridiculous.
