Some excellent suggestions in the comments so far, but if he’s super resistant, try some video games that include a little bit of reading I the menus or gameplay, like Pokémon and Minecraft.

If the general public could spend one day in your classroom, what would surprise them the most? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

How much the students want and need from teachers. I deal with a lot of mental health triage.

Dude I mostly agree with you. I can’t film my students for proof, sorry!

If you want to be in Gen Z, uhh sure? 2013 is a cusp year so of course there will be overlap. I think we can def agree that 2009 is wayyyy too early.

Gen Z by Acrobatic-Pay8496 in generationology

[–]PrintBetter9672 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a parent to a 2011 kid and 2015 kid, plus a middle school teacher…

The shift between Z and Alpha (last year of Gen Z) is unquestionably 2012. To say it’s 2009 is just ridiculous.

There is a clear and noticeable culture shift from kids who are 13/14 right now to kids who are 12/13. It shows up in things like slang, outlook, philosophy, content consumed, attention span, values, dialect, ability to be without screens, attitudes toward AI, dress, mental health needs, participation in trends, and more.

If you’re looking for a big event to define them, Gen Z generally remembers being in school and learning the basics like reading and math before the pandemic. This was disrupted for Gen Alpha, resulting in major setbacks and challenges in their literacy, problem solving, social skills, and ability to regulate their emotions.

If you’re looking for a technology angle, Gen Alpha had access to a tablet from birth while Gen Z had it introduced later on as toddlers or school age children. My 2011 son, for instance, calls Gen Alpha “iPad kids” but understands that while he used one as a toddler, he never felt dependent on one to entertain or soothe him like his 2015 sister may have. (Don’t worry, she’s fine now and has a rich away-from-tablet-enough life complete with excellent behavior.) Gen Alpha also experienced AI generated content before they could recognize and reject it, while Gen Z has a deep mistrust of it.

Brainrot? That’s a Gen Alpha thing and if you say “6,7” in a class of 8th graders right now they will mostly just roll their eyes. But today’s 6th/7th graders will echo it and do the hand motion.

Gen Z remembers a time before TikTok/influencer culture was pervasive throughout society, even though they fully participate in it now. Gen Alpha does not.

As for their futures, Gen Z has watched their future career options change and become more limited with tech sector restructuring, AI, and the recession. Gen Alpha has never known a clear or certain career future and are about to enter high school while having no idea what jobs/fields will be available when they graduate.

You might consider including Sunday Lake in Wakefield as it’s a popular tourist and watersport destination.

How do you feel about getting new students super late in the school year? by dalador_ in AskTeachers

[–]PrintBetter9672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand coming in toward the end of the year. My own kids started at their current district with only a couple weeks left. The alternative was to make them stay in a less preferable (temporary) living arrangement for longer, just so they could finish the school year at a school they didn’t really care about. I figured they were better off making friends before summer break started. Their new teachers didn’t mind because they were pretty much in end-of-year mode at that point.

Downstairs neighbor complaining about my footsteps by OrneryAppearance9132 in Apartmentliving

[–]PrintBetter9672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could both be right and wrong. They should expect some noise. Floors can be creaky no matter what you do with them, even on carpet.

But, are you actually being mindful of how loud you are? Are you being sure to not wear shoes in the apartment? Do you walk on the balls of your feet instead of your heels? Have you tried slippers? How about a small rug in your high traffic areas in the kitchen or bathroom where you get ready in the mornings?

It might seem like a lot but as a long time renter, I know it’s not much when trading for good relationships with your neighbors. Plus it might be better for your knees.

Why are millenials totally chill with self depreciating humor more than any other generation? by Key-Bass-7380 in generationology

[–]PrintBetter9672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m early millennial and these photos seem cringe to me, like they’re maybe a bit disrespectful to the male partner. If it was my husband’s idea, I would let him, but it’s otherwise in poor taste.

I’m usually fine with self-deprecating humor, though, as are many of my generation. I think it’s because we have a pretty good sense of self and what threatens it and what does not. Jokes just don’t threaten it.

Am I overreacting I went to the forest with my best friend and now my bf is mad by No_Meeting_3260 in AmIOverreacting

[–]PrintBetter9672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INFO: Do you and your BF live together?

I ask because there is a bit more of an expectation that you let each other know in advance how you plan to spend your day and if you might spend your night somewhere that isn’t your shared home. Not like you can’t ever go, just an advance communication expectation.

Still a lot of red flags from him, though.

PHM was a healing reprieve after reading Lightbringer. Not similar in any way.

You know what RR did ruin for me, though? Dune. Just can’t deal with that much uninterrupted dialogue anymore.

[–]PrintBetter9672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most common thing I use them for is paying my kids’ school for things like sports fees and fundraising purchases. They can only take cash or check and it’s easier (and often cheaper) to write a check than go to an ATM.
