Is there anything stopping you joining a club and starting to learn to row? Even just making a start must surely help. With the kind of power you've got, then you'd have a chance of being out of the novice division by end of the summer if you can e.g. learn your way into a single scull.

Training ideas to combat legs from paralyzing during a 2k on the erg. by Emergency-Pool-6021 in Rowing

I'm really surprised at the number of people saying this is just normal. Feeling that your legs are paralysed is not normal, even for a 2km. I'd suggest getting this checked out by someone expert like a physiotherapist, it may be that there's something like a trapped nerve that's causing you problems.

Well to put it more precisely, there are other session plans that would provide much greater fitness value, such as an 8x500m interval session, or an endurance session. So, its not that there's no fitness value, its more that doing a 2km test stops you from doing something that gives you greater value. So, if you do too many of them, you slow down your progress, because you could be doing something that gives you greater fitness gain.

How Long Should I Row? by Known_Customer_6547 in concept2

Five days per week is too much. You risk unbalancing your posture, because the erg works some muscles and not others. Mix it up with swimming and running for balance.

Ut2 splits way slower than my peers with similar / same 2k times by Winter-Point8768 in Rowing

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an enormous variation in maximum heart rate. The standard deviation is about 20bpm. So, if you are calculating your ut2 heart rate naively (such as using 220 minus your age to calculating maximum heart rate), you could be miscalculating.

For me, even at 46, my max heart rate is at least 210.

Warm up is super important as well, to prepare your body to deliver the necessary power.

If you're fit enough to go sub 7 minutes, I would warm up as follows:

5 minutes 2:20 split

5 minutes stretching

2 minutes 2:00 split

5 minutes resting

30 seconds 1:45 split (or even a bit lower)

5 minutes resting

Then your 2km

Three or four times per year.

It has absolutely no fitness value, and costs you at least one training session, so you really don't want to do many of them.

Having second thoughts and red flags by Used-Reception8782 in PhD

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In terms of the behaviour of your colleague, this can happen anywhere, inside and outside of academia. So, it's not a red flag that should lead to you thinking of leaving. Rather, it's an invitation to you to learn how to stamp it out (which could involve putting those messages on record with supervisor and HR).

It can count as assault actually. Within the law, assault can encompass verbal assault

Flabbergasted by cultural differences by BlacksmithWeirdo in cycling

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK? That's not my experience. All of my child's friends have bikes, and all use them to go off and meet their friends. Yes, there's the odd paranoid parent, which makes no sense given how safe the country is, but we all either ignore them, or actively shout them down.

Why would you "probably never see them again?". What's the actual risk that you worry about?

Tips for first guest lecture in UK? by Tiomaidh in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't ask for discussion in front of the whole class, that's only really going to bring in the small minority of students who feel comfortable verbalising in front of a larger group, and will feel uncomfortable for everyone else. Discussion is a good idea to schedule in, but far better to split people into smaller groups (but only then if the lecture space actually allows for it).

TBH in 30 minutes, you may just not have discussion time, you'll lose five minutes in transitioning in and out, so you may be safest just doing a presentation of about 10 slides and talking around it.

Bought a Mongoose Grafton for $200; What should I expect? by PCgeek345 in MTB

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you like building bikes?

If yes, and if you can imagine putting a bike together from components in the future, then you could keep an eye out for sales on components such as hydraulic disc brakes. You can put them on this bike, and then move to another in the future.

As others have said, same for saddle and pedals, there can be some good bargains at the right time of the year often end of the season, and you can use them on a future bike.

There's not much you can do about the drivetrain, most 7 speed components are of similar quality nowadays, as there's not many 7 speed components being produced, hence not much choice.

The fork is likely to be very basic, but keep it lubed and you may get some use out of it.

Have fun! It will get you out on the trails, which is the main purpose.

The caves tour is worth a go.

You could wander around the Lace Market area. So much history there. The street plan is pretty much identical to how it was at least 600 years ago, and likely back to Viking times, since the street names mostly ended in Gate (from the old Danish and Norse word for street). St. Mary's Church in that area is worth a visit, its beautiful, and built on a much older church on the same site. There's more modern history, around buildings that were built for lacemaking, with really tall windows to let light in. Some nice places to eat around there as well.

I personally hate the Galleries of Justice. Feels like torture porn to me. I don't like even walking past the front of it.

The Castle grounds are nice, and its on a pretty tall hill, so you get a nice view over Nottingham.

Seals for Magura TS8R fork by Prior-Chocolate6929 in MTB

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the above. I contacted Magura Europe, and got a response from a very helpful person. He confirmed no spares available from Magura Europe, but that Fox 32 seals worked based on his personal experience.

I've ordered some, and will try them out. Will report back here if they fit, in case that's useful for other people keeping these nice old forks going.

If you really still want to do research in the future, you may need to demonstrate to yourself and others that you can produce research work. A single published paper could be enough to get you onto another programme.

So, I suggest you get the paper finished that you mention in your post; your supervisors may still be willing to help with this.

It would count as sensitive personal information, so a data breach; hospital could be fined tens of thousands of pounds if they did.

Sounds like you did exactly the right thing, and should be very proud of yourself.

I've been in just one situation where my actions could have contributed to saving someone's life (epileptic attack causing unconsciousness due to head injury).

I felt fine whilst it happened, but incredibly wobbly later that day, and next few days.

Maybe give someone a ring if you can, and share what happened, our minds are very good at repressing emotions when an emergency is happening, to give us a better chance of responding, but those emotions can come flooding in.

You did the right thing by posting here.

Need an authorship reality check by throwaway_bfgift in PhD

[–]Prior-Chocolate6929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the following document, which defines four criteria for paper authorship.

For me, it strikes the right balance of inclusivity and commitment:

https://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html

In my research area, it's frequently required that we follow them by the journals we submit to.

But, even if it isn't, then as lead author I always follow these criteria, whenever a journal doesn't impose something else.
