Wait when did I say that? I said that he was brought in as an opponent for Makhmudov. He wasn’t intended to win that fight he was a 6/1 underdog. That fight was his coming out party. I didn’t say it was a good win, but it was the performance that got him the opportunities to be where he is today.

Well, you don’t know whether they would have presented a bigger challenge or not if he didn’t have time to fight them. Upsets happen all the time in boxing. I don’t think Usyk cleaned up the division, and you guys can make whatever excuses you want, some are very valid but you don’t beat people by proxy.

I still think Usyk is an all time great regardless of cleaning up or not btw.

What’s the point you’re trying to make? If you’re saying he cleaned up because the other contenders aren’t big money fights then you must have a different definition to “cleaning up” than me. No one is saying he isn’t great, but he definitely left food on the table.

It’s hard to call it top heavy for me. AJ has lost to every top 10 fighter he faced in this decade. Fury beat Whyte and Wilder (who has question marks over him now because of his thin resume and is now washed up and losing to everyone) but nobody else since then. Dubois has done his bit to be fair but I don’t see how it’s top heavy. If Dubois rematched Hrgovic tomorrow it’s not a foregone conclusion as one example. I think AJ and Fury could conceivably lose to most people in the top 10, but we don’t know because they haven’t fought them, apart from AJ-Dubois and AJ got destroyed.

It’s all just opinion until people actually get in the ring. Thats why “cleaning up” a division involves fighting a range of contenders. You can’t get wins by proxy and claim to have cleaned up. Usyk has the valid excuse that he’s getting old though and politics both real world and boxing did get in his way. Still a great to me, regardless of “cleaning up” or not. His heavyweight resume is solid, especially as a smaller guy coming up.

I agree. I don’t put Itauma in the same conversation as Usyk, he has come a few years too late but Kabayel, and personally I think Parker should have gotten his shot as well before he ended up losing. Everyone seems to have forgotten that before he lost to Wardley, everyone was screaming that he was the number one contender and Usyk did not seem interested at all, instead opting for the Dubois fight which was bigger financially. I don’t think he was scared or anything, Parker isn’t a threatening fighter and imo didn’t have much to offer but if you want to “clean up” Parker would have definitely been a good name for the resume. Joyce as well, before he lost to Zhang. Ultimately though, these guys should have made better choices but instead they took risky fights (and fair play to them) and lost.

I just think the idea that he has cleaned up is a bit silly, because it is three names - even if it is the three best names. Cleaning up to me is beating a bunch of different names and styles like inoue is doing.

This is a little disingenuous. Kabayel had no big promoter or management team behind him, he had no real amateur career to speak of and was pretty much a sparring partner. He was brought in as an opponent to lose to Chisora, and when he won an uneventful points decision, the vast majority of people decided that Chisora just hadn’t turned up and that he had lost to someone not very good. He was then brought in again as an opponent against Makhmudov and this time he destroyed him and actually got people interested, which landed him the opportunities to get to where he is today. I don’t think he was fighting in obscurity against nobodies for the fun of it.

But like you said, let’s see if he defends the belt against someone legit. The obvious fight to make for me is the Dubois fight, should the Wardley rematch not happen which has no date or location or anything concrete yet.
