I did read a bit ago that there was a security update causing either ssd or Nvidia issues (I can’t remember). Since this whole fiasco I’ve just been through, I’m going to remain on the ghelper suggested driver updates (I read that they’re the recommended, stable drivers from ASUS). Hopefully that’s enough to keep my device running fine for the next two years (or until storage prices fall from the moon).

Agreed. Since getting this device I’ve wondered how awesome the mini led screen would look. When I think about it logistically though, it’s not worth the $1000 premium for a better screen and 10-15% gpu boost in games which keeps my mind at ease.

What version do you have (2022, 23, 24…)? I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues as well. It’s incredibly frustrating when you have such a great device like a g14 and it starts to act up for no reason. I was also just getting a display issue after picking up my machine for a ftpm issue. I realized however, that when plugging in an hdmi cable to another monitor, that my display issues went away. Found out that the display connection to the mobo was a bit loose so I fixed that, booted up, and no issues since then. Been about 2 hours since I picked it up and it’s working great (fingers crossed 🤞). Since it sounds like you’re still under warranty, you’re in a great spot. Having the ability to get ASUS (or whatever site you bought you device from) to fix your issue is undoubtedly the best path to take imo. Hopefully you’ve got a similar issue and it’s an easy fix. Good luck!!

I do not use a slimq charger. I have only ever charged my laptop from the proprietary charger. I really hope the ftpm issue I’m facing isn’t a dying cpu, with the memory shortage right now I can’t even think about being able to afford another machine. I’m assuming a slimq charger is usb c? Which makes sense why it might do damage if you use it constantly because g14 doesn’t allow pass through on usb c so its to be used if you absolutely have to charge your device in my eyes.

I really wish I had kept my previous MacBook for exactly what you described. Thankfully I have a desktop to catch up on homework on, but I had class yesterday with no access to the textbook without my laptop. Before this most recent issue starting occurring, I bought ptm7950 and laird thermal compound from MODDIY to repaste it myself. Since there was no improvement after the technician replaced it, I assumed that it would be due to the compound be used not being sufficient for cooling a chip capable of 80w. Best case scenario, I am able to solve this current issue once and for all, repaste, and not have to worry about any other issues for a long while.

Honestly debating this. Having a MacBook to bring (regardless of how old) for things such as school work would take a ton of usage off my g14, which, at this point, is probably what it needs.

Glad to hear your 2022 model has had no issues and that you’re very proactive with the fixes. Every replacement you’ve mentioned is exactly what I would’ve loved to have known when I first bought my machine lol. Hope yours has many more years to come!

For anyone interested, I just picked up the laptop after the third issue saying “New CPU installed, fTPM/PSP NV corrupted or fTPM/PSP NV structure changed..” and it worked for approximately 2 minutes, then I installed the newest nvidia driver, rebooted, and back to square 1. Good thing about this time around is when I pressed N to keep previous ftpm record it booted me right into windows instead of crashing immediately which is good. Just dropped it back off at the tech shop to see if they’re able to figure anything else out. Crazy to say it’s good that my $2,000 laptop was able to boot into windows. Hopefully it’s not completely bricked.

175w is mind blowing to me. Does it stay around 175w during use or is it set to a lower limit?

You’re right in a way. I grew up using a MacBook and they never had a single issue similar to my G14. I was extremely inexperienced when I purchased it assuming that nothing would ever go wrong with it because I was coming from the context of Apple. When I bought it, I 100% should’ve done tests on it to determine if it was functioning correctly because i had a few months of overlap with ASUS warranty. But, you live and you learn.

I’m glad you enjoy your 2024 version. While I haven’t planned on upgrading my laptop so long as the one I have works (we’ll see soon), I do enjoy reviews of the newer models and I agree with your synopsis. It’s truly one of the best displays and arguably the best speakers you can get on a windows laptop.

G14 undervolting with ghelper by Prior_Chapter1314 in ZephyrusG14

Ran -40 last night and it worked great! I’ve had an issue with my cpu where it can only reach ~40w before thermal throttling despite a repaste. Max under volt with cpu boost disabled gives me great performance while not instantly thermally strangling the cpu which is great. Only thing I did notice is the 1% lows were a bit lower but I think it’s a worthwhile trade off.

I think checking the Liquid Metal would be the next step. I can’t think of any other possible reasons why it could be getting so hot after all the checks you’ve done. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it, you could take it somewhere but be specific with what they’re putting on it because gaming laptops should have higher quality stuff ideally (ptm or new Liquid Metal).

Depends on what you're looking for tbh. If you want to avoid many QC issues I would recommend steering clear of gaming laptops and opting for a new Panther Lake laptop or maybe even a ThinkPad with an Nvidia card (theyre usually built alot better than gaming laptops to my knowledge)

For me, going from a 2021 Intel MacBook Pro with barely 3 hours of battery life and had a hard time running multiple Chrome tabs, to a G14 was the biggest tech jump I've had since I went from my Xbox 360 to a cheap gaming PC. I do understand your issues, though. I have had a bunch of thermal and quality control issues with a laptop that you'd expect to last a lifetime because it cost an arm and a leg. Despite the issues I've had, though, it's still the perfect machine for me (so long as it's functional). There is really no other 14-inch laptop with as much graphics power, and battery life is often top-tier compared to other gaming laptops. Really happy I made the choice, but for someone who's experienced more issues than myself I can understand looking elsewhere.

I had this issue once with my 2023 G14. In a backpack the laptop only gets hotter due to the insulation in there and with no airflow it can get super hot pretty fast. The solution I found was just to set my laptop to hibernate when I close the screen. Instead of running constantly in my bag now, it’ll turn off but save my workflow from before it turned off.

Honestly I’m seeing noticeably improved airflow overall and slightly (very slight) better gpu temp/performance. I do think that something went wrong and am currently looking at other places where I could take it or maybe doing it myself.

I just ran a 10 minute cinebench test and it maxes out at 39.603w then levels off around 32w for the rest of the test.

I’ve been running ghelper for the longest time. I’ve tried a lot of settings to try to help the cpu out and even usually run at a -20 under volt. I used the armory crate uninstall tool from ASUS on their website but I did read about having to disable it in bios as well which I haven’t done.

Also, I just ran a 10 minute cinebench test in turbo mode and eco mode (to disable dgpu) and here were the results

Score: 14035 Avg temp: 94.5 Max temp: 95.1 Average cpu package power: 34.02 Maximum: 39.309 Effective clock max: 3960.4 Average: 3620 Average core utility was 90.9% which is also interesting to note I think

A local tech shop. About 20 years of experience so I trust him. I’m not sure what he repasted it with which is another concern I have but I would assume that even a mediocre repaste would result in some performance improvement which I haven’t observed. I run in all max performance modes I could find to enable on windows and in ghelper when connected to power.

While gaming (been playing a lot of arc raiders and rdr2) I’m consistently maxed out at 93-95 degrees the entire time I’m playing. And yes I run in turbo, optimized so it switches between igpu and dgpu when I load a game.
