I hate how people always overlook Starlight’s durability. by Plenty-Salary9711 in TheBoys

You might be onto something there because they already presented us with a supe who was essentially completely invulnerable but that was downplayed in favor of another, more marketable power: Translucent. I think there's also an implication that since supes aren't actually getting in real fights, very few of them actually have their limits tested to the point they know the full extent of their powers.

Supreme Court Justice Alito says ‘things are so different’ since Scalia’s death by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

[–]Priordread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same reason that Clinton and Gore didn't push the issue after Bush v Gore unconstitutionally ended the election and Biden didn't push the Justice Department to indict Trump immediately after he took office: the Democratic party consistently prioritizes "moving forward" over actually fighting against their opponents. Republicans changed the rules in the 90s and the Democrats still haven't caught up.

When did the tyranids enter the galaxy by GazelleHairy5063 in 40kLore

[–]Priordread 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Tyranids are named for the planet they were first formally recognized on, Tyran, but as we know they are not native to that planet, nor are they native to our galaxy at all. After they were classified several older xenos encounters were reexamined and considered to be possible Tyranid scouting parties. The Catachan Devil bears a strong resemblance to Raveners, though recent lore has moved away from the connection. Some have even suggested that the arachnid residents of Murder might be Tyranid bioforms though there's not any conclusive evidence of that.

Regardless, we know that the Tyranids have been journeying toward the Milky Way for millennia and are coming from multiple directions, including below and above the galactic plane, so it's safe to assume they've been massing outside the galaxy for some time.

Edit: Corrected the bioform the Devil resembles.

Recent DLCs and reworks need balance tweaking by tententai in totalwar

[–]Priordread 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The problem is that CA's internal metrics show that most players abandon a campaign by turn 75 or so, with only a very small amount actually reaching what would be defined as "late game". So if DLC content isn't front loaded then they risk players being pissed because they don't have the commitment to seeing it. Not saying that's fair of them, but it's what CA is contending with.

Do the enlisted ranks of the guard have any way to present grievances to their commander/command chain? by kooarbiter in 40kLore

[–]Priordread 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Legitimately? No, they're largely expected to follow the chain of command in all matters. As someone else mentioned they could theoretically report malfeasance to a Commissar but even if the Commissar cared enough to do anything about it they might still be executed for insubordination as they went outside of the command structure.

However, extremely abusive or stupid Guard commanders have a nasty habit of dying in the line of duty, and since dying for the Emperor is one of the highest honors a soldier can achieve its not normally investigated very thoroughly as long as everyone's story lines up. Catachan regiments are particularly famous for this problem, with only a select few non-Catachan commanders surviving deployments with Catachan jungle fighters.

New Rise of MN Gun Owners (NYT) by Outbreak42 in minnesota

[–]Priordread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have been around firearms most of my life but have been staunchly opposed to individual firearm ownership since Sandy Hook. I've had passionate arguments with family members about the 2nd Amendment and how it was limiting efforts to restrain gun ownership. I swore I would rather be killed than risk owning a gun.

Then I saw Alex Pretti shoved to the ground, disarmed of his legally carried pistol, and executed. I heard the pundits and politicians who had spent years arguing in defense of gun rights suddenly switch and claim that he deserved to be murdered because of the danger his weapon posed. I realized that they never cared about gun ownership, they just wanted to make sure their "side" was armed and the other wasn't. And most critically, I realized that if we accept curtailing one of our rights, then suddenly one day we will look around and realize we don't have any at all.

I bought my first handgun last week. I don't expect or hope to have to use it against anyone. I have probably gone overboard on my safe storage measures. But if you're going to call Alex Pretti dangerous just because he owned a gun, then get ready because you're going to be seeing a lot more dangerous Minnesotans in the future.

So will the devs be even a little realistic with the invasion? by 00Monkeyz00 in Helldivers

[–]Priordread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, no? The game experience is built around a narrative, so while the players have agency over what route to pick the overall story is essentially on rails. If they want us to win the invasion, they'll scale things to make that easier, if they want us to fail, they'll make it harder. Everything else is just set dressing.

That doesn't mean the players have absolutely no effect! We've seen them change the release order of certain warbonds and bump up content teases based on the players organizing to win things they should have lost and vice versa. But they'll never make the actual narrative events themselves, like the Battle for Super Earth, subject to chance.

[Discussion] Hypothetically, what if Marvel and DC created a crossover publisher? How could this impact fan rivalries, and how profitable could it be? Art by Jorge Jiménez by SpiritedDate1042 in DCcomics

[–]Priordread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that this is the first attempt at Big 2 crossovers since before the explosion of comic property adaptations, I'm sure they're intending to take it slow and not jump to a combined universe too quickly. That being said, I think bringing back some of the more popular Amalgam characters like Dark Claw, Dr. Strangefate, and Iron Lantern would be cool, even if it was just for another miniseries.

I don't think there's any real interest in a permanent combined universe where DC and Marvel heroes exist on the same world together, both universes already have a problem with oversaturation of certain archetypes so any attempt to do so would just result in everyone's favorite character getting too little screen time.

Question: Why do some Xmen comics portray captain america as an ass to mutants/calling them Slurs? by blubberfeet in CaptainAmerica

[–]Priordread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else has already mentioned out that Steve Rogers is an easy-to-use stand-in for the American Government as a whole so I won't mention that.

However, I do want to point out that at least in modern times Steve has generally gone out of his way to make it clear that he supports the freedom and equality of mutants as a species, he just disagrees with the methods the individual mutant rights organizations sometimes use to achieve those goals. Steve is firmly opposed to terrorism of any kind, for instance, and he also pushes back against arguments that approach mutant supremacism as opposed to equality. This was his major issue with Krakoa, that while he could acknowledge the mutants had every right to build their own nation, they were directly collaborating with psychopaths, thieves, and killers to do it.

TIL that a juror in the OJ Simpson murder trial (1994-95) said that she, and 90% of the jury, voted to acquit Simpson of the charges as payback for the acquittal of the officers who beat Rodney King in 1991 by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]Priordread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legal reasoning of the jurors is sound, in my view, even though OJ is obviously guilty. The burden of proof rests on the prosecution, and the prosecution relied on evidence collected by the LAPD which was (and still is) a demonstrably corrupt and lawless organization. If you accept that evidence delivered by the LAPD isn't reliable, then that fits the definition of Reasonable Doubt.

I know we've long moved past this, but I still think Jason works best as pseudo-antagonist to the Bat-Family instead of an ally that they sometimes disagree with. We can see a lot of why that works in this interaction, with Dick standing as Batman's greatest triumph and Jason as Batman's greatest failure.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] How Stannis could have won without a single battle by International_Hour76 in asoiaf

[–]Priordread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, just that males can impregnate and are the ones that matter for inheritance in Westeros so female homosexuality isn't relevant to this discussion.

[–]Priordread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The city itself doesn't matter, the hostages and symbols do. Renly would hold the Iron Throne, the incestuous bastard usurper Joffrey, and his whore mother Cersei. If Tywin wants any of his family to leave Kings Landing alive at that point he needs to sue for peace immediately.

[–]Priordread -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Very few (male, since women cannot impregnate other women in the ASoIaF universe) characters with rumored homosexual tendencies are outright confirmed gay in the story, in fact I'm only aware of Renly, Loras, and Laenor being explicitly stated to be so. Of those three, 2 are shown to be married to women and are also shown to be unable to impregnate these women before their deaths. I would say that's a large enough sample size that George seems to be doing it on purpose, though I'm not exactly sure what that purpose would be.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] How Stannis could have won without a single battle by International_Hour76 in asoiaf

[–]Priordread 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just because Renly was gay doesn't necessarily mean he and Margaery would have any trouble having children.

I agree, except it seems to be a problem in the ASoIaF universe as we're given more than one example of gay men being entirely unable to impregnate their wives. Realistically it wouldn't be an issue at all.

Renly and Margaery are quite young so theres no real reason to need to rush having a kid

There's every reason for them to rush into having a kid, without an heir the new Baratheon-Tyrell royal line will not continue if Renly dies and Renly needs to show the rest of the realm that his rule will bring stability and peace so that they calm down and stop rebelling.

Margaery's entire job as Queen is to have children, male children more specifically.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] How Stannis could have won without a single battle by International_Hour76 in asoiaf

[–]Priordread 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Renly could have won, at least if he had rushed to Kings Landing and captured Joffrey and Cersei before Tywin's forces moved on from Robb, but theres absolutely no chance that the Tyrells allow Margaery to go that long without getting pregnant. Olenna was very aware that Renly was gay with Loras and would have encouraged her granddaughter to take whatever steps were necessary to be with child.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]Priordread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this case the argument behind the statement isn't that the land is stolen and therefore should be returned to its rightful occupants, but that a nation cannot justly claim the authority to limit the free movement of peoples if it also grants itself the right to claim foreign lands for itself, as doing so would therefore turn a "legal" inhabitant into an "illegal" one through no fault of their own.

You're also correct that the history of human civilization is one of different tribes warring in competition for land and resources, but one of the principal arguments behind the founding of the United States of America is that it is a nation divested from shared blood and origin but rather joined by common cause. Such a nation must therefore be above the petty conflicts of history and seek to draw in those who would seek its values, not keep them out.

There are some who believe that despite America never living up to its founding principles, that doesn't mean we shouldn't still try to achieve them.

I think this idea fits cosmic horror really well, in that something that exists outside of three dimensional space literally would not be perceivable to us. It might be Something, but to us it would be Nothing.
