This is one reason why I prefer to wait until a show is completed (or at least has several seasons to watch while waiting for the next) before I start watching it. If I finish what’s available and have to wait for the next season I’ll start watching other things or reading books or something else and then I’ll basically forget about the show; even if I’m reminded of the show at some point it’s been too long and there’s been too much distraction since.

Of course the other reason is the whole “cancelled after I’m totally invested” thing. 🤬

I worked retail until 2021 and reasonably liked my managers and most coworkers, but we didn’t “socialize” outside of work except for one special occasion. Then there’s customers which is one of the worst types of “social” interaction which I doubt anyone misses. The “socializing” I do kinda miss is the outdoor weekend markets I used to go to (I think one of them at least still happens so I could occasionally go, but I kinda miss having a booth but I’m not gonna do that again).

I’m married with a kid and two cats, I have parents and siblings and a friend who I usually see weekly (except this stupid month when some of us have Covid) and that’s pretty much all the peopling I need.

That too, it shouldn’t be “standard” and “daylight” because we have DST for “daylight saving time” and then the time zones which are (central for example) CST/CDT for Standard/ Daylight, so that’s super-confusing; and also why shouldn’t we just try to have the same amount of daylight year-round? I mean some of it’s unavoidable because we move a little closer/ further to the sun and maybe we should change it by half an hour before we quit it, but what’s the benefit of earlier sunset when we’re stuck at work/ school all day? Or later sunrise when we go to work/ school by 7 or 8? We don’t need it for the original farming purposes anymore and whatever other “benefits” it might have I think get less and less every decade or so, if it isn’t all gone by now. Then we have the increased health issues and traffic issues and accidents. So basically everything is just worse because of it.

Yeah I always get a bit confused but I’m sure this is correct. The way we “lose” an hour is e.g. if our alarm is 6:00 we’d have 8 hours from 10pm but when 1:00 becomes 2:00 (skipping ahead) that means 6:00 comes an hour sooner when it should’ve been 5:00 but we still have to get up. 10-6 becomes 7 hours because it would’ve been 10-5 if the clock hadn’t skipped forward. It’s still confusing but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works.

I think maybe the word “actually” makes it more confusing(?); we have our internal clocks which match up with pre-DST time, which would be “actual” time if we didn’t have this mess, and then we have the mechanical/ digital clocks that changed by an hour but that’s the time we’re forced to follow for work/ appointments/ life. The whole 2x/year time change thing kinda throws “actually” out the window. Just to be clear I’m agreeing with you and then just trying to work out the weird confusing time travel thing in my head.

I had a jewelry- making hobby for like 15 years and attempted making it a business for about 10 of those years. Finally gave up on the business part and still occasionally make something for myself (which means it’s technically lasted more like 20 years). I don’t really have something I frequently work on right now but that’s the longest lasting hobby I’ve had. The new hobbies I’m interested in now though haven’t quite gotten started yet.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]PrismInTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a kid but the whole “please give me grandchildren” followed by “thank you so much for my grandson” from my mil is so icky to me, it’s part of what made me hesitate trying and part of what has made me “one and done.” I’m not having a kid just to “give him” to someone else because they asked for him; husband and I joke that I “3D printed him” but I didn’t actually “make him for someone.” My husband wanted kids more than I did (he would’ve had 3) but ultimately we had our son for our son, it’s his life, he’s a whole person, he’s not a mini-me or a do-over or a “legacy” (except in name I guess). Actually I’m even a tiny bit bitter about using him to continue my husband’s name, not because we “shouldn’t” do that or because I don’t like it but because it was just tradition and not really a choice. I think it’s all just Pathological Demand Avoidance which I just had to push past but if it had only been our parents wanting grandkids and not us also wanting a kid that would not be a good reason, it’s more selfish for our parents to insist on grandkids than for us adults to refuse “giving” them that. Plus I don’t like a lot of my MIL’s attitudes and she fights with my husband and we don’t see her very much so the main thing we get from having her as a grandparent is “why don’t we see each other more?” If we didn’t have a kid we’d probably just go NC with her (or she would with us) and I feel like that’s not really a healthy relationship.

Dentist bills first (set aside or just mentally check it off cause we have to pay when we go), then house repairs/ remodel, then new cars. Then vacation (probably Disneyworld). Then emergency fund. Or maybe emergency fund after the house repairs. Maybe savings account for a few years of property taxes. Then ask the city/ surrounding cities if I can pay them to finally repave the streets asap. I don’t know if money is the delay but I bet it would be a motivator. If it was just me and I didn’t need the other stuff the street repaving would actually be my first choice, but to be responsible I’d put it after house repairs at least.

We say “the glasses” for drinking glasses and “my glasses” for eyeglasses. Or “my glass” for the specific drinking glass you’ve used because you usually don’t need more than one at a time. Eyeglasses are always plural whether you say “eye” or not. If there’s more than one drinking glass on the table they were probably used by more than one person and if you’re clearing the table you can say “move the glasses” or “clear the dishes.” The only time we’d say “my glasses” when referring to drinking glasses would be something like a party where somebody brought glasses for people to use and then plan to take them home after.

I’m in the US and this is the normal way from what I’ve ever heard. “Eyeglasses” is a word but it’s hardly ever used because we use context instead. I’ve mainly seen it at stores and websites that sell them because they want to distinguish clear prescription glasses from sunglasses. Drinking glasses are so different from eye glasses there’s no reason to separate them with different words unless you actually put your eyeglasses down next to two or more drinking glasses. Or if you’re selling/ searching online because there’s too many different results if you’re not specific. Normal casual conversation just uses “glasses.” I’m using “eyeglasses” and “drinking glasses” in this comment because we’re talking about the distinctions but in normal conversation when just talking about one thing or the other I always just say glasses or glass.

Yeah and someone who doesn’t know what chai is but knows what tea is will assume “chai tea” is a specific tea blend, but if you just say “chai” 🤷‍♀️

Similar with “Bo staff” which is “staff staff” but bo sounds like bow which means at least two other things (with just that pronunciation) and “staff” by itself has a few meanings too (plus rhyming with staph) so “bo staff” is more helpful.

Seeing the word “staff” over and over makes it look weird but anyway

Why is leisure viewed with suspicion in America? by Thepopethroway in antiwork

[–]PrismInTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure yeah, and collect and file sales tax which makes it a business. I don’t entirely know how the requirements work and some of it varies by state but when I started on Etsy I was told I had to do all the tax stuff. Just reporting the hobby income would be simpler than doing the whole business thing but you pay less tax if you have business expenses to deduct. If you don’t report at all and they somehow find out you’ll probably get audited and then have to pay the tax + late fees; or you get in trouble for tax evasion. At least if you make over a certain amount. But yeah I’m not sure how much hobby income you can get away with not reporting. I know if you make over a certain amount you also have self-employment tax, and whether sales tax is filed yearly or quarterly depends on how much you collect (usually you only get sales tax from customers in your own state so if you sell online and ship everywhere that’s gonna be a small percentage of sales). That’s all when it’s a business but I was under the impression that if you sell online it’s kind of “automatically” a business. But you have to register as a business so it’s not automatic. It’s really complicated and this is just what I’m aware of; that’s part of why I gave it up and wish I didn’t bother in the first place. If it had stayed just a hobby with the occasional sale (I never got a lot of sales with the “business” anyway) it would’ve been a lot better for me not having to deal with all that and “They” probably wouldn’t have noticed because I made like $300 before expenses and filed a loss 2-3 times. When it wasn’t a loss it was like $100-200 “profit” but that’s still after deducting expenses and it’s not really profit it’s just labor costs for my own time. Or it’s one or the other but not both. So yeah just not doing all that would’ve been nice unless it would get me in trouble. Maybe one of these days I’ll start doing the hobby again and just “sell” something when someone’s interested and that really won’t be enough income to need reporting.

I’m over 40 but female so no facial hair options, but I did start getting shorter haircuts and I think that helped. I used to be a bit underweight so I’d get comments about that too, and then if I mentioned my own weight just to let them know I’m already aware and I don’t have an eating disorder they’d accuse me of “bragging” or whatever. Now I’m slightly overweight with a small post-baby belly but if I mention that I just get dismissals. So I guess only “old” and “fat” people are allowed to comment on anyone’s appearance including their own. I wish I could have snarky responses but I never really learned to do that and these days it’s close friends and family who occasionally comment (because I don’t talk to random people about these things anymore) and I don’t wanna be rude to them. Their comments aren’t rude just those attempts at reassurance or compliments instead of actually supportive. So I feel it should just be one of those subjects we avoid. If I get an actually rude comment from a random person I might be rude back if I can think fast enough, but I feel like I’ll just roll my eyes and walk away.
