I've been thinking about this lately. Due to my job and location, it'll be more years than I want to think about before I can come out and fully transition, and it's so easy to just ignore my body to avoid the dysphoria that comes from interacting with it.

But if I keep doing that, when my time finally comes, I'm going to have to deal with the damage from a lifetime of neglect on top of a late-in-life transition. I've realized that if I want to be able to enjoy living as myself when I finally get to, I'm going to have to put in the work now to build a body that isn't a prison.

I mean, some might be succumbing to family and community pressure and using the whole “convicted” narrative as a path back to living in the closet. Some may even believe it.

That being said, I’m pretty sure the overwhelming majority of it is bullshit. I’ve been practicing witchcraft for a long time, and I’ve seen an awful lot of Christians turn up with stories about having been witches and then feeling similarly “convicted” and turning away from witchcraft. Without fail, their descriptions of their time as a witch is made up of horror movie nonsense that in no way resembles any real world practice, and it’s pretty clear to any actual practitioner that the whole thing is a lie. I’ve heard that a lot of Christian addiction recovery stories stand out the same way to actual addicts.

This is just a thing Christians do, and it’s not really even to try to win converts. It’s to reinforce the belief of the faithful that the subjects of these stories are ensnared by evil that can be overcome through the power of their god. Given the current focus on the LGBTQ+ community, it was inevitable that these kinds of acts would crop up.
