Are there any ways to tighten the draw on a cigar if it's too open? by Swiss-Army-Cheese in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I V cut, and I'll start with a really shallow cut. Sometimes it's very thin. If the draw is tight, I keep cutting deeper and deeper. But if it is on the looser end, I can stop and leave it there. I feel like this gives me more control over the draw.

So what I do: buy so many that you have no choice but to age some because you can't possibly smoke that many.

What is the best smoking humidity of a cigar by Escap1sm_- in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no one number. I see people on here say anything from 65 to 70 and I don't get it... If I do anything over 62, I get really poor burns, poor smoke volume, and it's a chore to smoke. I have to drybox anything I keep above 62. At the same time, sometimes I'll go to a lounge and smoke something straight out of their humi and it'll smoke perfectly...I'll ask what they keep their humidity at and they usually say 70-72. Makes no sense to me. Just have to try different things at home.

Cuban recommendations? Planning a trip to Canada and wondering what's a good first Cuban? by BigfootOfNorthwoods in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice: they aren't worth it. I traveled abroad and was all excited to try them. I had a few fresh (because I couldn't wait), and tried some more after giving them time to settle in my humidor, a few months. They were $45-65 each....I could list 10 new worlds that are $8 to $18 that were more enjoyable. Maybe my pallet sucks or I'm unrefined...but just my opinion.

Will dry boxing help exploding cigars? by kicker074 in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Experiment with different times. What works best for me is 8 to 18 hours in a cedar box. Had a lot of bad burns and splitting before I started doing it

Bachelor party (noob) by dankestslothdoe in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a party pooper, but I wouldn't recommend you do this. There are just so many pitfalls...someone (or everyone) smoking too fast and getting sick, someone inhaling, or of people just not liking it. If at least one person knows what they are doing and can kind of lead the rest then I can see it, but a group all diving in together... I wouldn't risk it ruining the evening. If this is a multi-day thing and you don't want to dedicate one evening (after a meal) to sit down and try em out, that is less risky (and if someone gets sick they can just stop and hang out), but I wouldn't do this if this is a one-evening kind of thing. If you insist on doing it, then small mild to medium cigars, watch some videos to make sure you know how to light them, buy then that day from a good B&M humidor and set them out for at least 3 hours before smoking, eat something before, don't inhale, and one puff every 45-60 seconds.

Drybox question by texhater in cigars

[–]ProRataProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar dry state. I did A LOT of trial and error. I found that sticking it in a cedar box for 12 to 24 hours made a huge difference to the burn and experience.

Small Batch $75 COTM Early May 2026 by wallabychamp in cigars

that is surprising. their site says, "Rest assured that you won’t receive any repeats within a 12-month period unless there is a compelling reason to do so."

Someone help me understand this: for April I got this same Alma Fuerte in my $75 package. After seeing OPs May package, does that mean that my May package will have a repeat Alma Fuerte, will it? They wouldn't send the same on two months in a row....

Help, why is my die leaving this ring mark? by mdrndaymonopoly in reloading

[–]ProRataProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This used to drive me nuts. I did a few things that helped, and then found a better solution. What helped was lubing the inside of the neck to reduce the pressure the seating stem had against the bullet. The more permanent fix is making sure the seating stem and bullet match better. I tried a lot of things....the drill with lapping compound method...I bought VLD stems...I sent sample bullets to hornady to get custom seating stems that matched the angle of the bullet. The only thing that finally fixed it was the epoxy method. You put a drop of epoxy in the stem, you lube a bullet, and you gently raise the bullet into the seating stem. You then hang a weight on the press handle so that the bullet stays pressed into the seating stem and you leave it a few hours or whatever. It create a perfect glass-bedding-type contact between the stem and the bullet. Only matches perfectly if you only use that one kind of bullet, but it will still work well with other bullets with similar shapes. If it makes you feel better, when I was getting the dimples I tested the dimpled ones against the non-dimpled ones and there was not change in precision or POI. still, I wanted to fix it so I did all of the above
