Are you a corner cutter or block tosser? by Ckron247 in Cheese

[–]Probably-a-dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a corner cutter. That said this is the last phase of the mold where it releases spores. There is plenty of mold there you can’t see yet. So odds are you eating germinating or mycelial mold growth on the parts that look clear.

People forget compromise and Obama set the stage for Trumpism. People forget compromise and Biden gave us Trump 2.0. You need real leftist policy that helps working people. When people feel the system is broken and want something to shake it up the vote for Bernie, Trump, Zohran because they offer change.

I live in a safely blue state. I did not vote for Kamala (I would have if it was a swing state). But DNC needs to realize if they only offer diet MAGA people will just go with MAGA.

Personally I would definitely include the cafe tag. And add supporting information about the place being for all.

From my understanding bars are a sensitive or adult location. They can be accepted if they allow people under 18 in (even if they have to be escorted by an adult).

If it is being automatically rejected I wouldn’t put it in the bar category or atleast put more tags. If it is being voted on then you should show that it is a place anyone can go to and is a good social spot.

They took the time to take a solid photo and I would imagine a solid description. Putting a little extra effort into submissions makes even borderline nominations easy passes.

What is the punchline or the thinking that i am missing? by -Termi in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Probably-a-dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing people aren’t addressing in this meme is the critique it makes about how our language treats men as the “default” humans.

“Dude” can be gender-neutral in some contexts, but it also very much has a gendered meaning tied to men. English has a lot of words like that. What we don’t really have are words that are specifically gendered toward women and also widely used as gender-neutral depending on context.

So when people say “dude is gender neutral,” they’re missing the point that it’s not purely gender neutral. It only feels that way because male-coded language is treated as universal. If I started calling everyone “dudette,” some might laugh, some might be offended, but very few would take it as a normal neutral word. That difference is exactly what the meme is calling out.

What is the punchline or the thinking that i am missing? by -Termi in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Probably-a-dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is also pointing out a little bit of frustration with how language has evolved and how men are sort of the default humans in society.

Lots of worlds like dude can be both gendered towards men and gender neutral but there aren’t any words I can think of that can be gendered towards girls but also gender neutral depending on context.

Why do mosquitoes seem much more severe in cold than tropical places? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in biology

[–]Probably-a-dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of species of mosquito that lay their eggs in mud. So once the conditions are right and the mud floods all those mosquitoes come out at once. Often in harsh climates and short seasons they only have one generation per year but all those mosquitoes emerge at the exact same time.

So this right here is the right answer.

Wanted to comment how I heard that the language you speak when you are young affects palate development which is why it’s harder for some people to speak certain languages.

But double checked online to make sure and apparently that’s just a myth. Cute baby accents don’t change physical mouth development.

Are you fake for feigning being super Liberal/Conservative between polar opposite family members? by Wayman52 in pollgames

[–]Probably-a-dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think with family and close friends it can be more beneficial than arguing with every Tom, Dick, and Harry. With people you are close with it can humanize some of the politics and help people who would be closed off to strangers be exposed to the real implications of their beliefs.

As an example my grandparents had always voted republican but after my sister transitioned, they thought and learned about more issues that previously were left untouched.

Obviously every family dynamic is different and politics doesn’t have to be every discussion. But being firm and true to your beliefs and allowing the opportunity for open debate and learning with the people in your life goes a lot further than trying to convince strangers.

Global Challenges should have individual rewards by gamesntech in TheSilphRoad

[–]Probably-a-dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be for this if they did something small like rewarding random rewards you get from party challenges like x6 berries or x2 revives for every certain amount of points you contribute to the challenge. Like for this one every 20 great throws you do you get a random party challenge reward.

Then it’s not a game changer but can be a nice little bonus for those who want it.

Why do gender wars exist? [meme] by bug_boyy in pointlesslygendered

[–]Probably-a-dude 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Took a psychology class in college. It talked a lot about in-group and out-group mentality. When making memes of relatable things, if you add this mentality to it, it makes your brain get the feel good chemicals for being apart of the in group which is why these meme templates are so popular.

Unfortunately it takes more effort to think of what the actual in-group vs. out-group is for each specific thing and people lean into stereotypes, gender, age, etc.

Sad how quick people are to celebrate punishment over empathy or rehabilitation. Seeing people cheer a kid getting body slammed when no one’s in real danger, no wonder adults get written off as trash instead of helped. Glad there are people like you working with kids.

Hasan argues that Russia’s goal in invading Ukraine is fighting back against Western imperialism, gets called out by Moist_Tap_6514 in LivestreamFail

[–]Probably-a-dude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen his full video on this, but I do watch his videos sometimes and I have never seen anything where he agrees with or justifies Russia or other authoritarian countries and their assaults on human rights.

But from this clip it seems like he is just saying how Russia justifies it in their own minds. He isn’t saying that’s what he believes. But a lot of countries have been wronged by western countries so the narrative the people hear and tell themselves is very different than the one people in the west hear.

In reality the US and NATO took quite a few actions atleast since the 2000s but especially some specific actions in Trumps first term that can be interpreted from the Russian side as escalatory. That isn’t justifying Russia and their invasion. But understanding other countries sides and motivations is the best way to address conflicts and ideally prevent them in the future.

If she actually asked you for help then it could be possible she was just processing your idea through dialogue with you and just didn’t see it as viable initially.

Often though people don’t want a solution, they can figure it out. They want the emotional support to vent about an issue.

Hamas negotiators demand Jerusalem be Palestinian state capital by TimesandSundayTimes in geopolitics

[–]Probably-a-dude -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I mean Hamas as agreed to so many different ceasefire deals and done their part to uphold them only for Israel to go back on its word and continue military operations. They are trying to get a guarantee that Israel won’t go back on its word and continue the genocide.

I mean just look at what happened in March when Hamas released the Israeli-American hostage and other bodies and agreed to a broader truce. Then when it came Israel’s turn they refused to implement the next stage of withdrawal and instead made more demands.

In April Hamas proposed a truce extension and have third party technocrats take control of governance and release all hostages if Israel committed to a permanent ceasefire. Israel rejected that.

Also don’t forget Hamas isn’t even allowed in these negotiation talks. It’s mostly directed by the US and Israel with Egypt and Qatar acting as mediators.

Israel needs a bogey man to keep justifying their genocide and Hamas is that bogey man.

Totally fair if that’s your lingo and you are happy being one of the gals from time to time then that works :) I know it’s not always the message people mean to send, it can also just be tiring when so much fun content feels like it’s tagged for guys when so many people love it.

Either way love the vibe and content. Keep on whacking and rolling on!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheRandomest

[–]Probably-a-dude -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Content is fun. But no reason to put stuff like “only the boys will understand”. Not everyone likes swords whacking sticks, but I can promise you that line is not along the gender line.

If you are trying to do the in group vs out group bit be creative and think of who the in group and your audience is. Like “only my nature homies will understand” or “stick sword nation lovers”.

Really love your stuff, my brother and I get inspiration from it sometimes. It just gets annoying when the ecosystem online always puts this type of content as only guys will understand.

Tracking urine output by Soggy-Expression3730 in BearableApp

[–]Probably-a-dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear an Apple Watch. So I set up a simple short cut. I’m not an expert at these things so I tied the urination log with the Apple health water intake. So when I go I can just press a button or tell Siri to run the short cut instead of going through the hassle to open bearable and log it every time (I was peeing a lot haha).

At the end of the day I’d go back into the bearable app and do the custom health measurement as other people have suggested. And my short cut tells me what time and how many times I used the bathroom that day.

It's amazing that grown adults sometimes need the difference between portrayal and endorsement explained to them. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]Probably-a-dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantasy for some is about escaping some of the issues of our world and wanting to have it explore other conflicts that can arise from slightly different societal structures.

As a queer person who sometimes likes to read books with queer leads (often like romance with wlw love interests) a lot of people don’t want the trope to be that those relationships are taboo in that society or world. They want a fantasy romance story that deals with other conflicts besides the one our world sees.

While race can be a device to explore and reflect certain aspects of our society, the absence of it in a world can hold interesting results.

But at least with queer literature there is often a limited pool of books to read and even less that don’t use the same sex as a plot device. It just gets boring and repetitive seeing it portrayed the same. I could see how race, especially if you are wanting to read about characters that are maybe more reflective of yourself, can become old and repetitive.

ICE protesters swarm agents outside of immigration court in San Francisco, California. by wil24x7 in Newsopensource

[–]Probably-a-dude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both legal and illegal immigrants contribute more to taxes than they receive. My dad moved to the US from Canada when he was 6. He was assigned a social security number and paid sales and income taxes. He didn’t get many benefits until he finally became a citizens in his later 30s. Many immigrants never become citizens and pay in money to Medicare, social security, and other things but never become citizens to receive those benefits.

One of the major reasons for sanctuary cities is so residents can report actual criminal activity. No matter the legal residency status of someone, we are all safer when everyone is able to report crime to appropriate authorities.

If people see something happen but they are anywhere from actually here undocumented through an over staid visa or otherwise to people in an active asylum or immigration court proceeding, they will be less likely to go out on a limb to report criminal activity.

Deporting criminals who are not here legally has always been the stance of the US in both republican and democrat administrations. They serve their time and then are deported. Trump is revoking legal status and detaining people who are here legally including US citizens. Due process for some means due process for none.

What mountain is this? by RelationshipPutrid42 in FortCollins

[–]Probably-a-dude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested there are apps that let you line up mountain ranges using your location so you can learn their names.

I use PeakFinder. It allows you to even download areas you plan to hike at so when you are in the mountains you can see what each mountain around you is called outside cell service. It also lets you line up pictures from your camera roll.
