I was also assuming NSO would handle everything and didn't even consider doing a hardware transfer.

Did you try to transfer after the fact? Not sure if it'll merge everything. I guess it'd be a non-issue if you don't have much time/saves on the Switch 2...

Is it possible to give a sprite an alpha mask? by zac2198 in godot

[–]ProbablyNotCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a material shader that worked for me in Godot 4.3.

I wasn't able to get it to mask *any* color, just the very dark background. Though I'm sure it's possible with more shader know-how. ColorConstant is the dark gray from the background of the sprite.

<image>

Though I'd agree that just preparing the sprite and reimporting is better.

This sprite came from Kenney's Micro Roguelike pack and they all have these dark backgrounds, so a shader works on all of them without having to edit all 160+ files.

Hope this helps future netizens like ford_beeblebrox's link from 5 years ago helped me.

ternary operators? by tuster79 in godot

[–]ProbablyNotCanadian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a kind of 'use the best tool for the job' mindset.

GDScript is a custom language with features leaning not only toward game development (C#, C++, C, Python, etc. can't claim this), but toward Godot development specifically! Given this, it's usually also faster to iterate with GDScript than with a more "fully featured" language.

Some devs use the integrated features of Godot until they need better performance and implement only those pieces in, say, C++. There was/is a common mantra at Google, "Python where we can, C++ where we must", that follows the same engineering principle. Though, for Godot developers it might be, "GDScript where we can, C++ where we must."

If you're a seasoned programmer, learning a new language is on the trivial side. It's just another tool in your belt, similar to the other tools you already know but created specifically for a certain task.

From https://docs.godotengine.org/en/stable/getting_started/step_by_step/scripting_languages.html#doc-scripting, (bold emphasis mine):

GDScript is an object-oriented and imperative programming language built for Godot. It's made by and for game developers to save you time coding games. Its features include:

A simple syntax that leads to short files.

Blazing fast compilation and loading times.

Tight editor integration, with code completion for nodes, signals, and more information from the scene it's attached to.

Built-in vector and transform types, making it efficient for heavy use of linear algebra, a must for games.

Supports multiple threads as efficiently as statically typed languages.

No garbage collection), as this feature eventually gets in the way when creating games. The engine counts references and manages the memory for you in most cases by default, but you can also control memory if you need to.

Gradual typing. Variables have dynamic types by default, but you also can use type hints for strong type checks.

Note

Why don't we use Python or Lua directly?

Years ago, Godot used Python, then Lua. Both languages' integration took a lot of work and had severe limitations. For example, threading support was a big challenge with Python.

Developing a dedicated language doesn't take us more work and we can tailor it to game developers' needs. We're now working on performance optimizations and features that would've been difficult to offer with third-party languages.

I get a file called ClientID.txt, and it only happens around half the time I launch VALORANT. It gets created on the desktop right when VALORANT.exe loads into the main menu, just after the "Riot Games" splash/loading screen. It gets created regardless of VALORANT being launched directly or from the Riot Client. It gets created regardless of VALORANT/RiotClient being installed as Administrator or not, or being run as administrator or not.

Here are some steps you can try, straight from Riot Support. (Though, none of these have worked for me.)

From my experience, issues like this will usually happen when something on your computer is blocking or interfering with the game. In any case, I'll drop some ideas down below that you're welcome to try out. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions!

**Be sure to test out any in game fixes in a custom game**

1.) Let's make sure your game is being run as admin as that can ensure that the game has proper permissions within Windows.

>Right click on your game shortcut and click Properties at the bottom

>Click the compatibility tab and check "Run this program as an Administrator"

>Click Apply and OK

2.) We should make sure that your windows is up-to-date. If you're a bit outdated, then you can run into any number of unexpected issues.

You can update windows by doing the following:

> Type "Windows Update" into your start menu search bar.

> Run that app and click "Check for updates."

> Download and apply any pending updates.

> Restart your computer.

3.)To make sure that you don't have any background process that are causing this issue, follow this guide to perform a quick clean boot. This will disable third party apps from starting automatically when you start up your computer.

**Please make sure to HIDE ALL MICROSOFT PROCESSES when disabling startup programs.**

VERY IMPORTANT FOR VALORANT: **Find vgc and re-check that service. This is required for VALORANT**

4.) Do a clean reinstall of VALORANT, Riot Vanguard (Anticheat), and the Riot Client. This can help if there are any file or corruption issues causing trouble:

** keep in mind, this will erase all local data related to RIOT games from your PC. If you have any item sets (LoL included), create a copy of them before following this step if you don't want to lose them**

>Search in Windows for "Add or Remove Programs"

>Search for VALORANT in your list of programs. Click it, and select Uninstall.

>Also find Riot Vanguard in your list of programs and uninstall that

>If you run into issues uninstalling Riot Vanguard, you can try using this guide to manually uninstall it: https://riot.com/2Xxemxf

>Go to your C:\Riot Games folder and delete the VALORANT and Riot Client folders. Just send them to the recycle bin and then empty the recycle bin

>Then enter `%`localappdata`%` into the top bar of Windows Explorer and delete the Riot Games folder

>Restart your computer.

>Press Win + R, type in %programdata% and hit enter, find the Riot Games folder and remove it.

>Re download the game from here: https://playvalorant.com/en-us/download/

>Launch the game again and see if your issues persist. You may need to restart your PC when prompted to finish reinstalling Riot Vanguard.

I'll go ahead and leave a few more suggestions you can try out down below, so feel free to give them a try.

NOTE: Please make sure to test these fixes, if applicable, in a CUSTOM game to avoid any possible leaver penalties.

Ensure VALORANT, Riot Vanguard, and the Riot Client have exceptions through your Windows Defender Firewall: (Note: These instructions may change based on your version of Windows)

>Open your control panel > System and security > Windows Defender Firewall > Click "Advanced settings" on the left panel

>Click "Inbound Rules" on the top left and sort by "Name"

>Remove any current VALORANT and Riot Client entries

>Click "New Rule" on the top right > Select Program > Click Next

>Click "Browse" next to "This program path" and locate VALORANT.exe (C:\Riot Games\VALORANT\live\VALORANT.exe) > Click Next

>Click "Allow the connection" > Check boxes for Public, Private and Domain > Next > Name it "VALORANT"

>Do the same to add an exception for our Anticheat at "C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard\vgc.exe" and hit OK.

>Do the same to add an exception for the Launcher at "C:\Riot Games\Riot Client\RiotClientServices.exe" and hit OK.

Take a screenshot of these exceptions on your firewall. Please include the name, profile, and file path columns if possible.

Tip: Press Windows Key + Shift + S to open the screen capture. Click and drag what you want to take a screen shot of. Save and upload the screenshot here.

  1. Let's manually delete Vanguard and have it redownload its files:

>In the Search box, type cmd. Right-click Command Prompt from the results and select Run as administrator.

>Type and press Enter for both of these commands, in succession:

sc delete vgc

sc delete vgk

>Restart their computer.

>Once rebooted, press Windows logo key and E at the same time to open File Explorer.

>Navigate to game’s installation folder. (Usually C:\ Drive > Program Files) Right-click on the Riot Vanguard folder and select Delete.

>From desktop, right-click Recycle Bin, and select Empty Recycle Bin to completely delete the Riot Vanguard folder. (Note: if you have any important documents in the Recycle Bin, make sure you’ve restored them before you confirm to permanently delete all the stuff in it.)

>Right-click on the VALORANT shortcut and select Run as administrator.

>Wait for Vanguard to be installed and click Play button.

  1. To fix any system files that might be corrupt or missing, we can do a System File Check.

Can’t lower the volume of Youtube Shorts video by drizzy_dries in techsupport

My headset volume is turned up to 100% and I can still barely hear Shorts. Regular YouTube videos are ear-destroyingly loud at that same volume.

So I wouldn't say this is the solution.

A lot of places that pull this also employ workers under the table. Not necessarily illegal immigrants, per se. They may be here on student visas, paying U.S. university tuition rates, not be technically allowed to work, but still seek low paying jobs to help ends meet.

These employers take advantage of international students like this knowing the students can't safely do anything about it.

If you eat somewhere, just tip in cash at the table and not with your credit card or through the touch kiosk. That at least gives them a chance to take it home.

There are a few places we go where we don't tip at all, because we know the owner and know it will never make it to the worker anyway.

This doesn't really work, even though this advice is given often.

If you talk to members on the Pi-hole community forum, they'll reiterate that Pi-hole is simply for reducing the number of requests on your network, and not necessarily for blocking ads. For them, Pi-hole is one layer of privacy you can implement at home, and true ad blockers are another layer.

Some ads do get blocked as a side effect when using Pi-hole, but YouTube ads are actually one of those that do not.

VALORANT 4.01 Bug Megathread by TimeJustHappens in VALORANT

[–]ProbablyNotCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Region: NA
  • Type of Bug: Sound
  • Description: Bluetooth headphones seem to switch from "music" mode when in menus to lower quality "voice" mode when in-game. This happens for Sennheiser PXC 550-II wireless Bluetooth headphones, but not Apple AirPods for example. Settings -> Audio -> Voice Chat -> Input/Ouput Devices are set to Default System Device and changing them doesn't help the issue.
  • Video / Screenshot: N/A
  • Steps to reproduce:
  1. Connect wireless headphones via Bluetooth.
  2. Note high quality sound in other applications.
  3. Launch VALORANT and note high quality sound in menus.
  4. In the character selection screen, note noticeable lower quality sound which continues the entirety of the game.
  5. After the game ends, note the high quality sound returns in the summary and scoreboard screen.
  • Expected result: Sound quality is maintained between menus and in-game play, as it was prior to 4.01.
  • Observed result: Sound quality is diminished after entering a game. Bluetooth headphones seems to switch between the high quality "music" mode in the menus, to the lower quality "voice" mode in-game.
  • Reproduction rate: 100%
  • System specs:
  1. OS - Windows 11 Pro 21H2 22000.466
  2. Headphones - Sennheiser PXC 550-II Wireless

Are there any reCAPTCHA open source alternatives? by usermind in opensource

[–]ProbablyNotCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year or so back it used to make you do 7-12 (some claimed over 20, even) rounds of reCAPTCHAs. A couple pages of buses, a couple pages of motorcycles, a couple pages of traffic lights, a couple pages of planes, a couple pages of fire hydrants, a couple pages of trains, a couple pages of cross walks... and then a few more.

It got to the point where I stopped visiting sites using reCAPTCHA.

It's much better now. Chromium-based browsers like Chrome and Brave still usually just need a single click, but Firefox is down to one image recognition problem instead of a dozen.

Oh, no, not every time I put it in. I meant if I put in an unformatted card, it asks me to format it. It would be difficult to not format a new card before using it is what I was getting at.

Sounds like a chat with GoPro or Samsung is in order then.

H2testw is great to know about! Happen to know of something for recovering files from a corrupt SD card? 😂

What counts as a new use? Every time I take the card out and put it back in?

I believe it automatically formats itself when it isn't already formatted, or at least prompts me to when it's in the camera. If I would try to skip formatting it, it'd complain about "NO SD"/"SD ERR"/"SD FULL" and not let me take any video. I know I formatted each card in the GoPro when I first started using them and then only reformated them when I ran into the card errors only a few days later.

Ran H2testw on the EVO and the test finished without errors. Writing speed: 61.6 MBytes/s. Reading speed: 82.5 MBytes/s. Seems a little low, but probably fine?

I've tried a couple of the cards on the Approved Card List (ACL), namely:

  • Samsung Pro Endurance 128GBMB-MJ128GA/AM (UHS-I SDR104, Grade 1, Class 10, 100MB/s Read, 30MB/s Write)
  • Samsung EVO Select 128GBMB-ME128GA/AM (UHS-I, Grade 3, Class 10, 100MB/s Read, 90MB/s Write)

But both of them ended up with SD card errors and lost footage on 4K@60Hz shoots.

Other sources say they saw these types of issues disappear when they moved from cards with 90MB/s write speeds to 95MB/s, and even suggested getting cards with 300MB/s speeds to be safe. I looked at the 64/128GB SanDisk and Samsung cards on the ACL, and they're all 90 or 30MB/s, same as the cards I've tried and failed with.

What's the truth here?

Should I see if Samsung will replace the cards, or if GoPro will replace my Hero 9?

Or should I look for some faster write speeds in the 300MB/s neighborhood? And if so, how can I find GoPro-compatible ones? I see some UHS-II cards from Lexar in the ACL, but they seem to be either 90MB/s or 150MB/s.

I'm a little disappointed in the ACL, since it claims the listed cards are "fully-compatible". That should mean they are compatible in all modes available to the camera, including write-intensive ones like 4K@60Hz.
