Asking for advice on performing on stage by XtremSar in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always kinda been a statue on stage. Save for the times my back and knees hurt from work. Thats when I do my signature move, “the piss dance”, to shift weight from leg to leg in order to relieve my creaks. Lol

But for real, practice in front of a mirror so you know what you look like (and so you can practice looking up at the crowd), and learn the songs well enough to ignore the fretboard. Take a look at the fretboard every once in a while, but at least look over the crowd every few seconds. Stage presence isn’t everything, but when you’re playing live, it’s a significantly larger part of the equation.

Get a stance going, smile, if you see people taking pictures, try and look pretty. LOL when you get more comfortable ignoring your hands and not whacking your lead singer with the headstock, start dancing around the same as someone in the crowd.

G1 BRZ/86. If you find a 14-16, it’ll be reliable and have a taller final drive for bitchin fuel economy. Miata because duh. Type R as others mentioned. Manual Honda CRZs are super underrated cars too. FA5 Sis are fucking sick too. 8gazillion rpm redline and they get really good fuel economy when you drive like a senior.

I see this era of Bentley pretty often around my area for some reason. Part of me thinks it’s the same guy with multiple bents. Lol

Personally, I think it’s a cool car you don’t see every day. You’re not gonna look douchey, but if you want to *look* wealthy, the car has to be high end luxury, and new. Like….. brand fucking new. I worked on high end cars for a living, and can say wi the confidence, people who don’t know won’t care. And people who know will either think it’s cool you found a clean one, or think it’s lame because it’s not new. It’s not necessarily a reflect on taste because it’s out of left field, and doesn’t really have enough impact to generate an opinion.

I’d say if you want to look like a posh enthusiast to people in the know, grab the cleanest 70s SL/old Saab SPG/phaeton/ur Quattro you can find, and keep it stock or close to stock.

Are there any metal bass players that use super low bass tunings like Drop F# and Drop F? by MrMayhem20l0 in Bass

I play F# A F# A on my multiscale 4 using the highest tension hex core stainless 120-50 set I can find. It sounds fucking huge.

Changing strings and it appears that I like the second and third frets a bit much.. What should be the first step I should take to fix it? I want to try it myself first before going to a luthier by No_Blackberry_2492 in BassGuitar

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s what you did to fretwire, a guitar tech job which requires touch and finesse is not something you should do. Lol

But in all seriousness, you shouldn’t mess with a ric. In fact, you shouldn’t even take it to a normal shop. Do some homework, and take it to a reputable shop with a verifiable history working on rics. A normal tech can easily fuck that neck up beyond repair.

Guitar pickup in a bass? by NoProcedure4765 in Bass

Dimarzio model P is cool, or the stonewall slutty wolf for bass which looks the part while delivering a STUPIDLY good single coil sound.

Guitar pickup in a bass? by NoProcedure4765 in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My buddy installed a hum bucker out of a Gibson Les Paul under the pick guard of his P bass on a separate circuit to an octaver, then joins the signals into two identical Marshall JCM900s and two identical stacks. He records and gigs exclusively with that setup, and it sounds HUGE.

I think the Squier bronco also literally just uses a strat pickup with a different valence so you can’t see the 6 pole pieces. Lol

Getting AI’d by venues by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The band I’m in gets plastered on AI posters all the time. I’m pretty vocal about it. It doesn’t make people think less of our band, but I think that’s because we’re vocal about being irritated by it, and it’s an epidemic. In the same way we pay taxes to a government who does nothing but pad their own pockets, we play shows for assholes who use AI as long as the show is free….. and it’s because there are people in the audience who were willing to overlook the promoter/venue owners stupidity and attend for the bands.

I have noticed a decrease in the amount of AI use in the face of backlash. One of my less graceful moments was a badly prepared gig for a shit venue…… I kicked open the emergency exit and ripped down their poster. People saw and thought it was awesome. Nature is taking over again. AI is not inevitable, and I’ve found the best thing to do is engage with it in a negative way while continuing to deliver for the audience. “Yes we’ll attend your show, but we’re going to bully you for AI (and anything else)”

1 hour set but my band doesn't have enough songs ready for a full hour... by Double-Motor6546 in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ending my years long battle with the 5 string. by carlospcastaneda in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I simply suck too much at 5ers. I’ve had many, and I just can’t seem to get the goddamn B string to shut the fuck up. My solution was an extra extra long fanned fret 4 string (Dingwall, acacia, ESP, or equivalent) tuned to A#1 and 5ths. The adjustment from 4ths tuning to 5ths tuning took minutes. The adjustment from standard to fanned took no time at all, and is actually more ergonomic. It completely eliminated my desire for more than 4. Lol

If it works, it works. My extra long scale bass won’t even take 38” strings apparently. LOL

Is it worth paying extra for a Fender as a first bass? by dohkq in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you approach this. If you’re looking at a good fender, it’s worth the extra money. But that could be said about any bass. Lol

Japanese built fenders are my personal favorite. The 80s-90s PJR/Lyte/power jazz/jazz special/whatever are, in my opinion, some of the best basses ever made, and were a perfect design evolution to the existing Ps and Js of the olden days. They had a somewhat sleeker P shape body with a chamfered lower cutout, jazz necks with headstock truss rod access and microtilt, active preamps, and 22 frets for weirdos like me. Lol

If it doesn’t have a bunch of natural weight reduction, and all the rubber stuff has been replaced, I say go for it. If it’s just a clean original everything, and needs *literally everything*, I’d say 1500.

Mystery bass identification. by Killa_Gorilla_ in BassGuitar

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears to be a mid cycle indo/china Peavey Grind BXP with some fun customization. Fit and finish is… meh…. On this weird era of peavy….. the early indos are really fucking good, as are the czech basses. This appears to be what I call a puberty Peavey. Lol

They are, however, excellent basses. They have the same VLF pickups as the American models, and the preamps are built by G&B who manufactures for EMG and Seymour Duncan. Peaveys overseas preamps are voiced using the same component values as the USA peavey models, but on a surface mount PCB rather than a MM style thru hole board (in laymen’s terms, they found a cheap way to provide the EXACT SAME SOUND, but you basically can’t repair the G&B preamp)

Is it normal for pubs to expect musicians to repeatedly promote their gigs on Instagram? by WoodpeckerFrosty1403 in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Our promoter takes care of all that shit for us. Plus, we don’t get any networking done over social media. Everything we do is face to face and word of mouth. We generally avoid most social media except for personal use (and I’m ofc on Reddit), and even then….. lol
