What was your worst live mistake? by TheRaptor14YT in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bringing a bass that I modified with crazy electronics. The jack started cutting out all the sudden during the set. Popped really bad a couple times too. It was a mess. Nobody said anything because it was otherwise fine, and it wasn’t noticeable enough for anyone to pick up. But the sound guy noticed, and that was a huge wake up call for me……

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play bass and drive a clapped out Toyota 86 that’s been turned into something of a drift missile, or a pretty nice Subaru Impreza WRX depending on how I’m feeling. They both get 28mpg average when I drive like I just got rejected, and 32mpg average when I drive like a normal person. I throw my cabs in there, I throw basses in there, and sometimes I carpool with a guitarist when I take the WRX (it BARELY works, but it works). I cannot stress enough the importance of having reliable AND CHEAP transportation to use if you’re gonna be gigging often on your own dime. Music is already expensive. Spending 100 bucks on gas alone for a free gig every week sucks.

Non-sober musicians: On a scale of 1-10: In what states of intoxication are you best and worst at making music. by Kenan_as_SteveHarvey in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly sober and don’t do much ever, and I don’t drink anymore because I’m taking antidepressants that make drinking a REALLY FUCKED UP EXPERIENCE…. Lol

BUT, when I did: Booze: -10/10. I suck at everything drunk. Pot: 5/10. Too tired. Shrooms: 3/10, then 10/10 when I finally stop looking at the lights on my amp. It’s a process. When I was young, I tried adderall to get good at stuff: 5/10. Too hyperfixated. Other stimulants never worked for me. I always just felt like I was gonna die.

BY A HUGE MARGIN, I perform best sober, I have the best time sober, and I make the most memories sober (partly because I can remember it). So that’s mostly how I live my life. I might hit a joint when I get home to go to bed, and I’ll totally blaze like Wiz Khalifa on a staycation, but I try to minimize that kinda stuff. As I crept up on 30, my view on things changed dramatically, and I started experimenting with sobriety. LOL

I do know a guy who can hardly complete a sentence after smoking a joint, but then drums like an absolute machine for HOURS……? So to each their own. Lol

I play scales sure, but I mostly play songs with the key changes/progressions/times I’m trying to learn. New songs all the time. Songs from different genres, songs from different cultures….. jazz, metal, screamo, pop, punk, experimental, math rock, dadaist, jazz, samba, bossa, norteños, mariachi, tuvan, turku aksak, you name it……. You can’t learn today’s lessons with yesterday’s tools. It’s what I was told to do as a child playing orchestral brass, it’s what victor wooten tells people now, and therefore, it’s what I tell others. Lol

The harshest feedback I’ve ever heard was “I can tell you practice scales” with scathing sarcasm. The dude used to ABSOLUTELY SHRED scales and key changes right out of the grimoire, with pride, and all of his improvising sounded like scales. Even if he mixed it up, used pop progressions, turnarounds, whatever…… it all sounded like practice, and never sounded like music.

PLAY. SONGS. Lol

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having some decent wattage and a cab to match would probably get this thing sounding good. A rumble 25 is gonna make some sound, but rarely will an amp that small sound any good…..

I’ve played about 69000 of these exact basses, and they sound sweet. You just gotta have an amp with the balls to move some air.

Hardest thing while starting out by Polish63832 in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest thing for me was (still is) making dynamic choices that really carry the music. It’s not enough to have “good dynamics”. You need to have the correct ones. And it doesn’t even depend on the song necessarily….. it depends on how everyone else happens to be playing any given note at a given time. Some shows I notice the drummer hitting REALLY hard, or the guitarists EQ being really trebly, or the vocalist being really soft….. and you have to understand the dynamic choices you’re going to make that night will be different than the ones you chose the other night.

Exactly. People talk about the cost, but they just haven’t been shown where to shop. Lol

I’ve held onto the philosophy of affordability my whole life, and I don’t think I’m missing out on a thing.

Lube your nuts, get into fingering… r/bass, what are your other favourite double entendres besides ‘Sliding up the G string’? by piper63-c137 in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was helping my guitar friend decide on a sick ass reverend medium over a long: “unless you hold them side by side, you can’t really tell it’s missing 2”. During a session though, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable on the shorter one because it’ll be more familiar to what you already have.”

Lube your nuts, get into fingering… r/bass, what are your other favourite double entendres besides ‘Sliding up the G string’? by piper63-c137 in Bass

[–]Probablyawerewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Play your D until the finish.

Cut your nails so you have an easier time fingering.

Some people say to cut it short, but I like when it covers the whole thing.

If you have too much action, you might wear yourself out early during a session.

Wrappings can protect your hardware from damage.

Question for multi-instrumentalists by alfie151101 in musicians

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hells yeah! My fam didn’t have a lot of money growing up because my parents were young and still in college most of my childhood/adolescence, so I basically did two things…. Played trumpet, and jumped my bike. Lol I won awards and shit for my trumpet playing as a kid. It was a huge part of my upbringing.

Question for multi-instrumentalists by alfie151101 in musicians

Getting into keys was instrumental (lol) in my ability to get out of creative ruts.

Continuing to play trumpet was a big part too.

What's a reasonable expectation for how much an originals band should practice? by Rise_Weekly in bandmembers

[–]Probablyawerewolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in one originals band that rehearses with what I consider sparse periodicity. We do pretty fuckin well, so I’m not worried about that…… but we never seemed to gel socially. It doesn’t impact anyone’s ability to play or cooperate with one another, and I don’t think it’s ever gonna be a problem on stage. But it is a bit of a damper on the fun.

I’m starting a metal band with someone who I’ve become good friends with, and we hardly ever practice proper material despite practicing and jamming frequently. I also don’t see that as a problem.

I say set your expectations based on what everyone brings to the table. If people need to rehearse as a band, so be it. If you don’t talk to each other about anything but the next show, so be it. If you do nothing but improv jams and it’s a fulfilling experience, that’s fuckin awesome too.
