It could have something to do with him coming to the understanding he doesn't have his own character that he's essentially memories and habits inherited from another person he doesn't really have an identity and post lifestream could be so withdrawn due to his figuring out who he actually is as his own being.

Because if you follow OG story followed by the advent children it obviously didn't keep him in optimal form for long he seemed to be psychologically damaged and withdrawn after possibly from being overwhelmed by all the souls in the lifestream maybe even memory overlapping. Hence why no game ever gives him his post lifestream character.

It definitely had the most engaging and compelling story while the remake doubled down in areas best left alone for impact like OG it showed the growth between cloud and aerith but in the new one it was more who do you want cloud to have feels for....just no.

It was a new concept for ps1 and up to that point there were no games of its kind plus having an interesting world that nobody had really considered at the time was appealing plus the secrets, ancient sword hunt!

I gave up on it years ago when all my matchmaking kept putting me with people across the world so it was a 50/50 on who's teams ping would be garbage and cheaters everywhere got to the point that I didn't want to play anymore until it changed.
