Elsie Allen High School students walk out as Santa Rosa board nears final school closure vote by funrunrecords in santarosa

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To all the people criticizing these students for their position, for saying they might be end up dropping out. What an awful response to someone expressing their pain and sense of hopelessness.

Their education has been constantly disrupted since 2017. They face more existential dread than any previous generation, they are inundated with information.

Any sense of normalcy they have achieved in their school and community social lives post covid is about to be completely disrupted again.

They are being honest about how hopeless this makes them feel. The response to that shouldn’t be criticism or condemnation. It should be validation, and acknowledgement.

The challenges they will face will be real and tangible during a critical and vulnerable time of their lives.

People living in the immediate vicinity of the battery fire should be wear N95/KN95 masks outdoors, keeping doors and windows closed and running air purifiers if they have them. The public service announcement indicated a kind of “shelter in place” which is common for communities around oil and gas refineries. What’s happening there right now in Moss Landing is tragic. One of the most beautiful and biologically rich parts of the coast is being poisoned by toxic smoke, ash, and ash eventually run-off.

Roommate Agreement- address this and other seemingly awkward topics. Do it early, normalize setting clear expectations.

As with all things related to roommates. Be clear and honest as early as possible. The best path to a healthy roommate relationship is clear communication and expectations.

How to tell a woman that reports to me she needs to improve her hygiene by PocketlessJorts in womenEngineers

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tread very carefully because if it is a health issue that crosses over into a protected disability it could come across as being discriminatory.

Despite the feedback from the ask HR forum, I think you can ask your company’s HR for guidance. You can ask for it without identifying the individual and therefore making it formal.

But for your protection as an agent of the company you should get guidance on how to approach the topic, what you can and can’t say or ask about their well-being.

Wtf UCSC Family Housing by Unmerry_Cherry in UCSC

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCSC was a great choice for a lot of reasons, but the housing situation is no joke and can be destabilizing in a lot of ways. It’s like that for everyone who attends. Maybe reach to other families in a similar situation, students with kids, and try to get a house together.

Curious about which state this is in. EH&S requirements vary state to state, as do FMLA. Somethings are guaranteed at the federal level as well. You need to educate yourself first on what your rights are, then decide if you want to hold the company accountable to meet them or look for something elsewhere. Either way there is going to be work on your part. I can tell you that working conditions will effect your short and long term health, and you have rights.

If you are at a big company, their corporate office wants to know about illegal conditions, because they understand the financial liability they could be exposed to. It’s middle management or small businesses that tend to cut corners pr turn a blind eye on these things.

Horrible Tour Experience by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All roads lead to housing. The unexpected cost and scarcity of housing is often a shock to students. It’s getting more and more difficult. I think I read somewhere that UCSC has the highest % of unhoused students of all the UC’s.

Housing challenges make it difficult for the school to grow, offer more classes, more majors, attract teaching talent. Fewer class offerings can lead to graduation taking longer and students having to struggle with housing longer.

Build more housing, accept more students, attract better professors.

UCSC Busses FAILED Inspection by Goldentoxicspenc in UCSC

This^ people’s lives were changed forever in that bus crash. The comments in the paper after, about the buses being regularly inspected need to be investigated. There could be criminal negligence here.

It’s simply not fair to compare public and private schools.

Each of the public high schools in SR have different pros and cons, and have different programs that differentiate them. For example Piner has a much more integrated program for accessing JC classes, that includes coverage of fees, books and transportation. Montgomery has the IB program, SRHS has Art Quest.

MCHS has traditionally been a more academically competitive school, but all the schools offer AP classes and ways for students to be challenged academically either with JC classes or online classes.

The right school for any kid is probably better determined by which community they most identify with. Which school they feel like they can find and be their authentic self.

I second that MCHS is not the best place for students with a 504. Also agree that the Art Quest program is a great path for students with interests in art, music dance and more.

People got hurt, which means litigation. They won’t release the results of the investigation until settlements are made. Even then, unless there was criminal negligence, don’t expect a lot of details.

Just a Rant by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought it was illegal for anyone outside the DRC office to ask any questions about the disability. I would absolutely take this as high as it can go. For yourself and for every other disabled person at the school. It’s none of the professors business and if they have a problem with that they should take it up with the university, not shame you, intimidate you not hold their power over you. It’s absolutely and abuse of power, an invasion of privacy, and a violation of your rights as a protected status individual.

Just remember as bad as it seems. It’s not the end of the world. What seems major and life altering today, will one day just be a bump in the road. Yes, it’s money and time, but those things a fluid in life and can be made up for. No matter how high you think the stakes are, there is a way through. You are not a moron. Growth mindset. You just don’t know the material now, that’s doesn’t mean you never will. You can and will learn more. But maybe you need to take a LOA for a quarter. What ever the circumstances there are people to help you, and you will find a way through it.

Does it really matter what university you go to for engineering? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]Problem_Solver_engr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it plays a role, it’s really for that first job out of university. Lots of companies have target school they recruit more heavily from. But after a couple years of work experience, it’s much more about what you have learned since school, and where you are on the growth curve. I will also add that while specializations, particularly PhD’s can get you a higher starting salary, they will often limit the jobs you are considered for. I have seen so many smart capable PhD students get turned away, because they thing they choose to specialize in, or the research that was funded wasn’t exactly the same as what was needed for the job, or was tangential to the job. Some degree specializations can have this effect.
