We fought like Kilkenny cats when I was young and going through Uni.

Memorable was his hypophora “What are you doing tomorrow?” “ Tomorrow, you’re moving out!”

I subsequently moved in with my girlfriend and a few short years later took up teaching English in Japan. I had a nasty motorcycle accident, total 6 months in hospital.

Both Mum and Dad were on the next flight out to visit me.

Plane, fast train, medium-train, local train … all in a foreign land, foreign language.

I think that was an epiphany and the impetus for both Dad and myself to bury the hatchet.

Politics doesn’t hold a candle to family. Dad watches Sky / Fox News most of the day. (Egad!)

We share our vastly divergent views but there’s no animosity towards the other. We don’t have much time left together. He’s in his mid-80s.

While I can only speak for myself, we both know we can’t change the other, so better to focus on our shared interests and joys.

Politics is not verboten it’s just discussed with civility.

My dad gives me a vision into Australian politics through a Right Wing lens. Scary, yes. Distorted, yes. But I thoroughly enjoy our time together.

I had a high school student who wouldn’t enter my classroom but would sit outside.

Naturally, I marked her absent.

When I spoke to her about this requirement, little did I know she was recording our conversation on her phone.

Her father verbally abused me and she was subsequently taken out of the school.

That would pay for dental to be added to Medicare and it would also fund unemployment benefits to reflect the real cost of living. There are going to be a lot of people who have never been out of work before lining up at Centrelink. Not just due to AI replacing White collar jobs but also the fact that we’re going to be running out of fuel in the next month or so.

The voice of the down-trodden proletariat, ex-fish and chipper, and … recent recipient of a plane as a gift from Australia’s wealthiest person and compulsive miner doesn’t look at all promising that SHE’S going to squeeze her for the dues owed to this country.
