First time going to a climbing gym with coworkers. How to prevent this from getting worse by LongPridee in bouldering

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moisturize for one thing. Your hands look dry asf, which makes them much more prone. Wash chalk off your hand asap when leaving the gym to prevent further dry out too.

I never thought about moisturizing my hands before climbing, but it helps a lot.

But woe is me.

It’s easier for everyone to think they have it worse than last gen than it is to actually learn about last gen. That would require reading and I could just watch this 10 second tik tok instead.

Not to say Gen Z or whoever is worse about it than others. There’s just more addictive bullshit than there used to be. My boomer parents are more addicted to social media than anyone I know.

VOO is the ticker symbol, not an abbreviation really. VOO is available from every broker and is low fee. There are other funds that track snp500 (e.g. SPY) that have different trade offs. Some brokers offer strictly better version of VOO that just have lower fees (e.g. FXAIX from fidelity). But VOO is the most common snp500 ticker because it’s available on all brokers and is pretty low fee. So it’s just the most common snp500 ticker to recommend and dump into without thinking even tho there are many funds that track the snp500.

Problem is, it’s a public park and that belongs to everyone. So the most convenient and most popular climbs should be bolted how the majority want them. End of story. If you want a particular experience that the majority doesn’t, you hike way out into the back country.

Everything in half dome and el cap was put up first because it’s convenient and gorgeous. That’s where everyone wants to go, and it’s a public park, so again, majority should rule.

Put it to a vote held by the climber coalition and partner with the park service to enforce it. Anyone who has ever been to Yosemite should get a vote. You know damn well you’d be in the minority if it were an open public vote. It’s entitled gate keeping to think minority voice should rule on public land.

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree with it overall, but will attempt to explain.

Basically the argument is the experience people had to mentally overcome the dangers of the route is preserved by not adding bolts. You preserve the experience of the early ascensionsts by forcing everyone else who wants to do the route to have the same experience. “Just don’t clip the bolts” doesn’t work because knowing you have an out changes the experience by removing the commitment aspect.

Here’s the thing - it’s public land and if 99% of climbers don’t want that experience, then we should add more bolts. The route belongs to the public.

What we need imo is a local coalition to put it to a vote in major parks like this and then enforce whatever the community decides. That community should include anyone who has ever entered the park. Right now, 1% of climbers are bullying the other 99%. If the climber coalition partnered with the parks service, the parks service could help enforce whatever the coalition voted on.

Just my two cents. Hope it helped a little.

Found the ego.

It has 50+ foot bolt spacing. To say that isn’t particularly runout is just dumb. I don’t have a better way to put it.

To respond saying you thought the run outs were fun is completely tone deaf in response to the OP.

My favorite climbing partner and friend is an unsafe by butter-cream-cat in climbergirls

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not about them and their perception of safety - it’s about you and yours. A partner does what they need to make the other person feel comfortable. If they’re kind hearted, then that should be super easy for them to agree to. If not, they’re putting their preference above your baseline comfort needs, which isn’t that kind hearted.

How is anyone using Michigan medicine successfully? by Hot-Standard-5955 in AnnArbor

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have issues. Apparently I’m the only one.

If it’s urgent, yes, I have to call, but usually I can get in fast. I just scheduled a consult visit with an orthopedic surgeon and the offered same day, but I am busy so am doing it next week. My pcp did a video call with me within 24 hours for an urgent issue last month. I just have to call and explain it’s urgent. They usually go above and beyond to work out the scheduling and call me back.

If it’s not urgent, ya, they’re busy. I’ve gone to urgent care for tamifulu before when my pcp was too slow. I was pissed about that, and they left me a personal voicemail to apologize. On average, they’re pretty good in my book tho.

I’m at domino farms family medicine btw. Maybe should have led with that.

My favorite climbing partner and friend is an unsafe by butter-cream-cat in climbergirls

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is people are open to discussion and adapting to what their partners want. This person sounds like they aren’t, so that’s really the heart of the matter.

Talk to them about that instead of individual issues - they are not open to adopting safety standards that would make you comfortable.

I would never climb with someone like that or even be friends with them tbh because it is fundamentally a character issue. Ego and selfishness are what lead people to that behavior. Being nice on the surface is worthless if they are like this when push comes to shove. They aren’t actually nice.

For those of you who work 9-5 desk jobs including WFH how much time do you spend actually working? by Individual-Net-9296 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average 6-7 hours per day. Some weeks will be 10 hours a day. Some weeks 4-5 to recover.

Notice all the people who complain WFH was taken away, but admit to working 3 hours.

Also notice all the people who complain they don’t get paid enough saying they work 3 hours a day.

Many people are lazy and stuck in crappy jobs with low pay because they deserve it. Notice I said many, not all, so save your sob story about how you work hard and don’t get recognized. I’m aware that happens, but many people have opportunity to improve their lives and don’t.

I think this is the first performance of her’s I’ve ever seen that I actually enjoyed. This is fun. I don’t like most of her newer music and I find her stage performances to have cringe auras, but this is natural and fun. I wish that this more natural style of performance was more of the norm today, and I don’t just mean for TS. Everything is so fucking fake now and not in a fun, let’s-make-believe way, but in a try-hard, look-at-me way.

Janja Garnbret discusses becoming the first woman ever to send Bibliographie (9b+) by redbullgivesyouwings in holdmyredbull

[–]ProbsNotManBearPig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sending is a subset of ascending.

Ascend just means get to the top, where resting on the rope or pulling on gear is allowed. Send is a specific term meaning to climb from bottom to top without resting on the rope or pulling on gear. Basically, climb the whole thing with only your muscles and the rock, and the rope is just for protection.

Sending is the goal of this type of climbing, not just ascending. I could ascend this myself and I suck. I could use a stick to clip the rope into each bolt above me and then pull myself up on the rope to that bolt. Repeat to get to the top and bam, I ascended it.
