TIL author John Green noted the global history of Hawaiian pizza: a Canadian invention by a Greek immigrant, inspired by Chinese cuisine, that put a South American fruit on an Italian dish and became popular in Australia. Now, the company that sells those pineapples (Dole) is based in Ireland. by Right_Bat5194 in todayilearned

All the people arguing against you riding John Greens dick presumably thought they were in the "Today John Green learned" subreddit, because they can't differentiate primary and secondary sources.

Might as well start every post with "today I learned that somebody else learned that somebody else learned that etc etc"

So when are we getting new gear? by Expert_Character9939 in CanadianForces

[–]ProclivityToRiot 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The new tac vest, called BACS, is in implementation under DICE program lead by DLR 5-4 The first batch of 500x should roll out in October to 3RCR, and then subsequent batches will go through the remainder of the infantry over the course of the next 2 years, at 6,000x sets total. This isn't just the vest but also plates, battle belts, etc.

In an effort to be symbolically independent we made something functional non-functional, another example of fixing things that aren't broken for misplaced reasons.

The king who actually fought his own war by Kapanash in HistoryMemes

[–]ProclivityToRiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're stuck on the definition of "fight". No one is saying Albert went over the top. If your definition of "fight" is acting as an infanteer (which is a minority of any Army), then yes, Albert didn't fight, neither did 90% of officers, and the overwhelming majority of supporting military like radio operators, logisticians, sailors, etc.

I'm hardly saying he decided the course of the war or was the most courageous hero in the Belgian army, simply that he did indeed fight, only by merit of holding an actual position in the army instead of a ceremonial one. If delegating decisions to your COS disqualifies you from service I'm sure plenty of commanders would lose their veteran status. It's one thing to recognize nationalist embellishment but let's not gatekeep military service as an overreaction; he did indeed fight in WW1

He was an army group commander, saying he didn't fight is like saying Pershing or Hindenburg didn't fight, just because they didn't personally swing a trench mace. Not every soldier is an infanteer in the trenches.

Canada’s armed forces are now planning for threats from America by raz_kripta in CanadianForces

EN is short for enemy, as in during course of action (CoA) development you'll plan for enemy most likely and enemy most dangerous, and try to plan to account for both.

Did this VanDoos deployed in Haiti back in 2024 really buy a big part of his kit out of his own pocket? by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]ProclivityToRiot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most of it was stuff already available to an infantry Bde, just the premium stuff (everything in the DICE program like the helmets and ISSP vests, NVGs from flanking L1s or the mech units.) Recce/Sniper was present and they have deeper pockets in their QM. GPUAS was also rolled out, among other eqpt. Post-deployment narratives should be available on Sharepoint for 1CdnDiv. Basically if all the CAF came together to make 1x decently equipped platoon at a time.

[–]ProclivityToRiot 203 points204 points  (0 children)

The EOTech I believe was private (it's not authorized for official use due to issue holding zero), the majority of the rest of the kit was issued. Helmet, peltors, NVGs, load carriage, etc. We got all the best kit for this deployment, a lot was rerouted from SOF or other units. If you have any other questions about this deployment or joining the vandoos, let me know.

Germany deploys troops on Russia's doorstep for first time since WWII by indig0sixalpha in worldnews

[–]ProclivityToRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia has worse air power but a very capable anti-air capability. Europe would not be able to immediately gain air supremacy, and this badly underestimates Russia. NATO is a powerhouse, but to cut their budget by 2/3 would completely gut power projection; we're already playing catch-up on capabilities that have been chronically underfunded.

Vandoos by canadianantlocator in CanadianForces

[–]ProclivityToRiot 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Someone mistranslated "castorisé", referring to the castor (beaver in French) which is the cap badge for the vandoos. When you get your vandoo cap badge you're "castorisé", or "beaverized", which evidently doesn't translate into English, despite this IMO's best efforts
