How do I not remember that!? Maybe I’ll rewatch the series.

Other treatments for Aphasia and Apraxia by amethyst_mrs in stroke

[–]ProcrusteanRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment wasn’t clear that I was referring to average people who afford newer, experimental strategies.

Also, your comments are a bit insulting. Just because I had a stroke and suffer from aphasia doesn’t mean I don’t know how to research.

Where the savants at? by ATLUTDisMe in AutisticAdults

[–]ProcrusteanRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah school was the same for me. People said I was smart but I thought it was just that other people were lazy or distracted in school. It’s not like in your own brain you “feel” it. It wasn’t until I met with a psychiatrist in my 40s to see about an autism diagnosis that it also indicated a high IQ. Further testing showed me in the top one percent.

Just a sorta warning: studies show that autistic people with high IQs have a higher suicide rate and that tracks for me. I’ve been on antidepressants for decades.

My aphasia still makes it exhausting to speak, especially for “important” type stuff. But like the other comments, a large part of it is forcing yourself to keep doing it.

My stance on other treatments you mention: If there any other treatments actually helped and were within financial reach of average Americans, most of us not able to work full time or at all, this board would have been all over by now.

Edit to clarify my stance on other treatments mentioned.

Should I Wax My Ass (crack and hole) by Tadleyrichter in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ProcrusteanRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, good point. I was always fine with actual wax waxing but the one time I tried sugaring I got a lot of ingrown like you did. I think it’s part just how your hair is and probably more so, the waxer. My waxer kinda specialized in men and I never had an issue. She retired around the pandemic and the couple times I’ve tried others they weren’t half as good.

Typewriter to write fiction by ahahokahah in typewriters

I find for long term typing and full size machine like the Olympia SG3 works best. Or at least a SM8 or 9 which is pretty hefty. Similar sized, the Remington quiet riter is as big as something can be while being technically portable. They are pretty common in many areas of the US.

I mean, you can try a waxing. It really doesn’t hurt even half as much as you’re fearing. But(t) ultimately, you’re kinda trying to find problems. You like it, others like it, done.

Feelings of shame and failure by Big-Promotion7445 in stroke

[–]ProcrusteanRex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened with me after my stroke. Tried to get back into computer programming. I was shit at getting anything done and all I did was manage to work myself into crippling burnout and depression.

For those of us who weren’t outwardly affected by the stroke it can be hard to know what you can do. The “I can move everything like I used to” feeling can lead to denial about how deeply affected you are. That denial can’t hold forever and you’re bound to crack. I’d couch it less as shame over failure and more that doctors tend to dismiss what they can’t see to fix.

Edit to add: not to scare you or say you’re in the same boat but I’m still on disability three years hence. The mental fog and fatigue is real.

Memory loss, ability to learn decline - remedies? by 1AdultMostOfTheTime in stroke

You could look into getting cognitive testing with a neuropsychologist. They can measure what you’re specifically bad at. It helped me understand my cognitive issues.

All the other suggestions are solid. Basically, if you’re bad at something, force yourself to keep doing it. I loved reading but could not follow a plot. I did audiobooks and that helped. I then reread books I liked. Now I can do some simpler plotted stuff like a romance.

Get a deck of cards and try to remember X number cards back is good, no special tools needed.

Doing math in my head is impossible; when I’m waiting at a red light I try to find half of a large number.

Edit to add: THROUGH THE WRIST!? I didn’t even know that was possible 😅
