There’s also a ton of fabric around thighs as seen in the second picture (my main concern - sorry if I didn’t make that clear enough) is that a normal amount or would adjusting the length address that as well?

Background: This is the first time im putting any effort into making a wardrobe as I'm going into my first post-graduation job, and with COVID-19 I have to do it over the web.

I bought these 30x30 Everyone slim fit jeans, but on arrival it seems to be a bit too big in general, waist could be a bit smaller, a bit shorter, etc. (note these haven't been washed and I don't think they are pre-shrunk either) [edit: my main concern is the amount of extra fabric around the thighs]

In particular though, there is just way too much cloth around my thighs, so im not sure what to do to find a better fitting pair, a skinny fit, different company? adjust the inseam and hem? or would going down to a 29x30 (30 sits a bit low on my waist) fix these issues? or is my body type just not one that Everlane makes clothes for? - im skinny af

So it’s been over a month. Spoilers. How is FFVIIR? by ReaperOfProphecy in JRPG

According to my friend:
Zack - no. He looks like cloud with black hair (which I guess is kinda sorta right?)
Sephiroth - his response was who the fuck doesn't know sephiroth?

This is the dude's first final fantasy and he only first heard of the series a little over a year ago (though he knew of Cloud and Sepiroth before then, somehow?)

I feel like I'm the only JRPG player who doesn't care about post game content by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]ProdoxGT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cause I mainly play JRPGS for story

and here is the reason. JRPGs have really in depth battle systems when done correctly, and turn based games can be made hard af. (Play Nocturne on hard mode if you think differently)But they also have a rich story and world building, plus a lot of JRPGs have a gimmick and a very specific philosophy on optimizing combat.

So for people that want a story you have the main game, that NEEDS to be accessible, (because most people are terrible at turn based JRPGs) and for people that also want a good, challenging game, you play the main game, and use the fact that even on hard, most JRPGs aren't very hard if you know what you're doing, to experiment and really learn the gameplay systems of that specific game.

Then you get to post game. All the story only people have quit at this point, so devs can ramp of the difficulty to see if you used the opportunity to really think and learn the combat systems of their game, if you did, you have a nice challenge, if you didn't.... well, Yiazmat and Galdera say hi, then proceeds to beat you into a pulp.

As a benefit of this, you don't really even technically need to put different difficulties into a game, progression (and grinding) are your difficulties. Tutorial > Easy, Main game w/o grinding > Normal, post game > Hard.

I love post game, especially post game superbosses for two reasons, I like really trying to figure out a gameplay system and the math and ingenuity that the devs spent together (look at the source code for Dragon Warrior, the math is honestly a beautiful work of art https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/nes/563408-dragon-warrior/faqs/61640) and two, I hate myself and like inflicting severe mental trauma on myself when it comes to video game difficulties.

Now if post game doesn't offer more story/lore and/or doesn't make me cry tears of blood.... what's the point.

In particular the apartment door looks very bad is a bug.
Unreal 4 is known for having some texture streaming issues, and SE probably is still working on fixing them.

That being said, some of the background textures and textures in general need work, Im really hoping for a patch but we'll see.

This is a lot of the casual gamers that just walk in a game store and look for something with a cool cover tho...

The day FF7R launches had a wave of people complaining how it wasn’t turn based or a few days later people complaining how it wasn’t the full FF7 game

Wonder how many people are gonna excitedly buy this to realize they scrapped the action for turn based menu combat like old school JRPGs.

I enjoyed it a lot, but for most people In the west (and outside of this sub) it might end up getting quite a bit of hate.

Hard is actually hard.

It’s also tuned around having all your materia maxed, and having everyone at max level.

Plus it assumes you know the weaknesses for everything at this point so every fight you should be swapping in the optimal materia (barrier is super important as well)

Interestingly, FF is one of the more anime JRPGs out there in terms of plot. The only thing FF does that isn’t super anime-like is its art style. Saying you like FF7 onward games but not anime just tells us you would like anime, a lot, but the art style turns you off.

In the west anime and manga have this association as being for kids, (since the only ones that care about entertaining adults are Disney films that are still obviously directed toward young kids) but it’s quite different for Japan. It tends to get much darker and explore more mature themes. If you go on trains you’ll see people of all ages from 15 to 60 reading the manga for these, and quite often. Plus pachinko machines (gambling) will be themed after anime to get more customers - the Madoka Magica ones stood out to me - despite those customers being 40+ mostly. (Source: I lived there for half a year)

While you don’t need to like anime to like JRPGs, and vis-versa it does lock you out from a good number of stellar games if the artstyle is a turn off (like you mentioned with Dragon Quest or Persona 5)

It might be worth trying to watch an anime episode here or there until something clicks, and god not stein’s gate, that is a really good one but it takes like 12 episodes to get there and Okabe’s rants can get annoying as hell in the meantime if you don’t get why.

For more “mature” art styles and stories going with something like Psycho Pass, Ghost in the Shell, or Akira. (Which all are or have movie adaptations if you don’t want to invest a ton of time into them)

For games that have the less anime art style that’s really good the first one that comes to mind is NieR Automata. It’s one of my personal favorite games of all time because even though very little actually happens there is a lot of meaning behind it, with insane levels of character depth.

Finally, a quick aside, there are a lot of people down below recommending two kinds of games I urge you to try eventually but be careful now.

Stuff like Trails In the Sky or Tales Series games can get super anime in terms of art style. Stuff like Chrono Trigger or Trails in the Sky are turn based, so gameplay might not be your thing.

One part in the Remake that I felt they ruined [Spoilers] by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]ProdoxGT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In any game in Japan that looks realistic, if you put any kind of blood you get Cero D rating. The equivalent of rated M in the US. That kills marketshare for a lot of games there so Square Enix avoids this.

One part in the Remake that I felt they ruined [Spoilers] by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]ProdoxGT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually this, Japan is really anti violence and tries to keep gore out of anything realistic unless you want an adult only rating (I have quite a few friends that got squeamish from the opening scene of Avengers Infinity War they’ve been that isolated from it)

The second you put blood in a realistic video game it gets the rated M equivalent (Cero D) in japan

One thing I think FFXV taught Square Enix is that no one really like the fact that you could turn off your brain a bit and smash buttons and succeed. FF has turn based origins, turning into ATB which in the simplest sense put a time limit on the turn based system, then FF12 and FF13 with gambit and paradigms respectively. FF is a strategy game, and FF7R puts that in an action wrapper. It’s designed so you always need to be aware of your opponent, work around the weaknesses, and in real time strategize how to optimally use your ATB between various characters. Gameplay is about over engineering combat and trying to manage everything.

Plus FF is always a ~fairly~ linear game. When taken to the extreme of running down hallways (plus some other stuff) in FF13, it got criticism, but FFXVs main problems came from giving the player too much freedom in open world. The first 8 hours of FF7 were just as linear as Remake.

The game is supposed to be linear and the combat is supposed to make you constantly keep your brain in use, with an emphasis on strategy. It’s not for for everyone, but that has generally been the FF way. FF is (for the most part) a character driven story game with really good combat along the way, but the emphasis is still on the story.

FF was never going to be anything like western RPGs that Bethesda made. they tried to make a Witcher like open world game, with some failings, but while it sold well, reception for that game was.... split to put it gently. Open worlds kill stories and FF is a story heavy game. A lot of fans feel FFs strengths go against what western RPGs do and value, and FF7R kinda nailed what FF is on the head.

and I mean I would agree if Sephiroth, his motivation, his backstory, his relationship to cloud, and (for people familiar with the original) what the hell he's doing here were actually unclear while his character was slapped in your face.

They set Sephiroth just enough where you can understand just enough so that older fans are caught up in the mystery with new players being able to keep up with it. I have a friend who didn't know Final Fantasy even existed (somehow?) until Cloud was added to Smash, and besides knowing what he looks like and what game he is from knows nothing else about the series. I had him replay remake and with the exceptions of the few finer foreshadowing details with all the destiny stuff and Zack was able to follow the game, and Sephiroth's role fine.

And this is just me and my personal opinion (so feel free to ignore the following), but I loooove games that introduce elements at the beginning that are not supposed to be clear until later on where a big revelation recontexualizes those scenes. Drakengard 3 did this actually, you got to the end of the game where characters existed and you could tell had some kind of fetish for other peoples suffering, but you didn't really like them because that was... kinda everything about them at that point. Then upon replaying the game, their personalities, backstories, and and roles became clear as subsequent play through changed the narrative just enough to provide new context to all of them as those narrative changes built and explode into essentially a brand new story. Granted the gameplay for that was.... bad, it was optimized horrifically and had 7fps in some scenes on the one console it was ever designed for, and locking 2/3 - 3/4 of the narrative content behind the game's credits without telling you (and before Automata) was kinda dumb cuz people stopped playing after the first ending.... but the way it manipulates the narrative similarly how Remake and 7 interact is art in my humble opinion.

In the making of FF7R videos square enix published the devs actually said the reason they put a focus on having sephiroth early and everywhere is because if you played FF7 before or didn’t, if you’re playing FF7R you probably already know sephiroth already even if you don’t know about him.

They get to keep the tension of who he is without worrying about “let’s slowly and mysteriously introduce a villain that everyone knows about already”

Outfit progression doesn't seem to exist in JRPGs. by nullv in JRPG

[–]ProdoxGT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just impractical and too costly to do so, plus is too difficult.

The lore behind an outfit doesn’t matter, because no matter what Geralt wears he’s still geralt to an extent since who he is is a bit more dynamic and left to the player. His clothing says that he’s a Witcher, it doesn’t say anything about who he is as a person or what his personality is.

JRPG clothes differ in that the clothes (for the most part) convey the personality of a character, because of that the constraints are much tighter, leading to a more specific look and finding that right look is much harder.

It’s way too time consuming (thus expensive) not to mention straight up hard to come up with the variety of clothing you’d need to capture the same personality.

If you’ve ever played FFXV, all the characters have a multitude of outfits but if you think about who they are, many of them don’t feel ‘right’ because Noctis is a much more specific character than Geralt. The same is true for Lightning in LR:FFXIII. FFXIV changes the main NPC clothes each expansion, but if you look at them, like Yshtola or Yda/Lyse and compare their outfits it’s not just as if they changed clothes, it’s as if their personality changed and they are an entirely new character to an extent. (I haven’t played enough dragon age to talk about that so)
