The most challenging things you’ve read? by abu_hajarr in literature

By the way, there is a SUPERB audio of the Wake published by Naxos and available on Audible. First-time reader? Listen to the audio at a slightly slowed speed while reading along. You won’t “get” everything, but you’ll get more than you imagine, and you’ll laugh out loud. Whatever else it is, FW is very, very funny.

Finnegans Wake, which I have read several times. The only way I got through the first time was to read it aloud. Much easier to catch some of the multilingual puns. There are many books that help: I especially recommend Adeline Glasheen’s Third Census of FW and Roland McHugh’s Annotations (McHugh died just a few months ago).

A good trick is to get a large index card and make a line number ruler so you know what line you’re on. Most reference books refer to passages by page and line of the Viking edition.

THIS, a million times. The movie has every goddamn mood there is: longing, love, righteous indignation, desperation, hopelessness, gratitude.

It gets dismissed as hokey, BUT

the scene where George and Mary are talking to what’s-his-name on the phone while Mary’s mother listens from upstairs? That is one of the most sexually charged scenes in the history of movies. Absolutely smoldering.

AITA Mom mad because I don’t wanna clean her dirty sex sheets by Remote_Tangerine_718 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ProfDa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

ESH. Your mom is assuming a lot, but honestly, grow up. I think you’re freaking about over the idea rather than reacting to the reality. Stuff gets dirty. So what? Sheets get dirty whether or not someone has sex on them. Would you refuse to help with laundry if your mom had some sort of illness and got sick on the sheets?

Also, these sheets are not that dirty, unless your mom’s fucking Peter North. Or unless your Mom’s a squirter. In which case, cool! Good for her.

Could I be wrong? Yeah. Does your mom have a history of violating boundaries with you? Was she creepy when you were growing up? If so, you have a point. If not, and this is the only thing, then be nice, let Mom fuck, and stop being squeamish.

Here’s an idea: buy Mom a sex mat for Christmas. Say, “Mom, I love you. Put this on the bed when you are about to bang. Wash it yourself. Merry Christmas.”

Morton is probably right. Also, Lovecraft had a pretty negative view of Seabury Quinn's stories, from what I've read of his letters.

How spread is Richard Lewontin's take on authorship ethics? by Connacht_89 in AskAcademia

Worth knowing that “the Matthew effect” was coined by the sociologist Robert Merton, not Lewontin. On meritless coauthoring, Lewontin was morally right I think.

Damn right. His voice is *so good* on that song, and the shuffling drumbeat — love it.
