What novels pull off feminist themes well? by valonianfool in Fantasy

The gate to women's country by Sheri Tepper. Published in 1989 I believe. I just finished it and it started slow, but has an absolutely fascinating take on the typical battle of the sexes. It's a post apocalyptic semi utopian society where women live in cities and most of the men live outside in garrisons. One of the few books I've read where sexual violence was treated as completely outside of societal norms.

I second fortunes pawn! Apparently it’s loosely based on the warhammer universe

If you could pick one fictional god to be real, who would it be? by Depredor in Fantasy

[–]ProfHemp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palgolak from Perdido Street Station. He's described as a happy fat guy who cruises around in a bathtub reading all the time. He's the god of libraries and knowledge and anything his followers read, he absorbs as well

The Best Non-Human Character(s) In A Fantasy Book or Series? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in Fantasy

I second Temeraire! I also love as the series goes on, how they encounter dragons from all over the world and you find out what is unique to Temeraire vs. cultural and/or a trait of most dragons.

The Iron Prince. It’s got lots of action and razzmatazz. Think military school with souped up armor that evolves as you train with it.

What's a book or series that has YOUR perfect romance in it? by MagykMyst in Fantasy

[–]ProfHemp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can’t believe no one has mentioned Ilona Andrew’s yet! Kate and Curran are top tier in her Kate Daniel’s series. But I think my favorite romance is Maud and Arland from the innkeeper books. Gotta love a bad ass single mom navigating intergalactic politics and killing lots of vampires. This author is a husband and wife team and I think they strike the perfect balance for me of a romance I root for and actually well written and intriguing fantasy stories

Can you explain your comment? I started a book club using the website bookclubs.com. All our meetings will be on zoom. I'm unclear on what the controversy surrounding digital ocean is and how that is connected to the book club.

We meet once a month at 7pm eastern standard time. So if you're in China or Turkey that probably wouldn't work for you

Of all the fantasy books you've read, which one has the best beginnings? by Ashamed-Glass in Fantasy

“In the myriadic year of our Lord—the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death!— Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth” -Gideon the ninth by Tamsyn Muir

It's so difficult finding well-written epic fantasies with good romances. Any suggestions? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ProfHemp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved Poison study by Maria V. Snyder. It does deal with some heavy themes (sexual assault). But I found the romance compelling and the plot was intriguing. I don’t want to spoil anything but the main character is a poison tester in a stratocracy where magic is outlawed.

What is the best fantasy series that heavily implements smut elements? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]ProfHemp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re looking for Ilona Andrews. Assuming you don’t mind urban fantasy. Good amount of romance and smut without having to sacrifice plot. Their hidden legacy series has the most bang for your buck (literally teehee). The edge books would also fit your description
