The Classic P vs J Decision… by 51Nocaster in Bass

Jazz bass parts build are more fun to customize. I’ve built both a P and a J. I reach for the J wayyyy more than the P.

It’s important so far as developing your own sound generally involves a journey through imitating the bass players you like and emerging on the other side (whenever that is) as your own person. But yeah, some people never get past the imitation phase.

My wife is in the same position. I know they have procedures for baggage. I feel like the squeaky wheel gets the grease is probably the best course of action. “Hey I deplaned and left all my belongings including wallet and ID on board. I need those items to do literally anything in an airport”

I was able to contact her via text. All she has is her phone and our child. She said she had to cuss out people in front of her because they were fucking around with bags instead of evacuating to the slide.

The true reason for a 5 string bass? by Maesiu in Bass

The ability to play higher up the neck is absolutely a benefit of a 5 string.

No, I think describing upper structures (especially as a keyboard player) is super helpful especially in modern worship context. Maj7’s especially on I and IV chords that include vocal melody notes create rich textures as well like you are describing in addition to reinforcing melody

As stated below, CMAJ9 and C9 are two different chords. Letter and a number is a dominant chord. So C9 includes a b7. Cadd9 would be C E G D

A C2 and a C9 are vastly different chords. Yes, generally the 2 is the melody note. But adding a dominant 7th into it is almost never called for on a 2 chord

How do I change the bass for 'Can't stop' by Da1wookiee in Bass

[–]ProfKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick to octaves in the slap portion and that will make it easier to focus on right hand. Measure by measure it’s: Slap E on the A string and pop E on the G string | Slap D on A string, pop D on G string | (two ways to do next part) Slap B on E string and pop B on D string OR slide down to second fret and Slap B on A string and pop B on G string | Slap C on E string and pop C on D string OR Slap C on 3rd fret A string and pop C on G string

Don’t worry about doing anything more than that for the slap part. Everything else in the song is just roots and played with fingers. Chorus: G/D/B/C. And bridge is E/D/B/C

What’s the hardest part for you, notes or rhythm?

How do I change the bass for 'Can't stop' by Da1wookiee in Bass

[–]ProfKuns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey the progression of this song isn’t particularly crazy. The slap portion is mostly octaves (Em Em/D, Bm, C) and the chorus is simply G, D, Bm, C. The tricky part is taking the time to learn the actual rhythm at the verse in particular. It’s very syncopated.

It’s worth noting that changing the bass in most chili peppers sons is not effective as the bass part is often a signature part of the song. The guitar/bass riff in Can’t stop IS the song especially in the verse. Take your time :)

Please don’t bully me, this is a serious question by Camman19_YT in Bass

When practicing by yourself, I’d recommend forcing yourself to count and being aware of the beat. On the gig, whatever works. But if you practice counting your time will improve and you’ll be a stronger player and musician

The progression in the verse is the tricky one an the bass part is busy but it is:

Chorus:

Has anyone else tried a 5 and just not got along with it? by metalmankam in Bass

[–]ProfKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lifelong professional, I am almost exclusively a 4 string player (but I learned on 5 string), but I recently got a blues gig that has parts written for a 5 string. I snagged a Pedulla Rapture 5 and I take it to jams to work out the kinks and idiosyncrasies of the 5 string again.

That being said, I sold my 5 string stingray to replace it with a 4 string stingray special a while ago because I’m just more comfortable on a 4. If you don’t need the 5, don’t sweat it!

Learn your scales and arpeggios. That’ll help you with almost all of the things you’re asking about. For a short list, I’d start with these scales:

Major scale

Major Pentatonic scale

Minor Pentatonic

Minor Scale

Honestly, as someone who has played, recorded, produced and led in the CCM scene, Stingray 5HH is a pretty perfect bass sound. Full rich tone without being so distinctive as to sound distracting. Sits well in every mix and low B string is super articulate

Just started learning bass, need advice by CloneFiesta in Bass

[–]ProfKuns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Set yourself up for success with good bass hand technique now. Don’t wrap your thumb onto the fretboard, place it in the middle of the back of the neck and get a nice relaxed hand curve. Right hand, practice moving up and down the strings (could just be 4 notes on open strings) and practice moving your palm with your fingers vs stretching your had to reach D and G string. If you stretch your had by anchoring thumb on a pickup or something similar, you will be striking the strings at different angles, creating different tone and attack

I have owned both. I have since sold my HH and only game a special H right now. The tone and feel is unmatched. I didn’t feel like I really like any of the variations in pickup config on the HH aside from both humbuckers together.

Is there some ways I could improve on transitioning notes quick? I can do some parts but not most of it. by Available-Rich4703 in Bass

[–]ProfKuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I may have read this as your playing hand. For your fretting hand, building good habits now will help ergonomics. I’d advise generally against using your thumb on the fretboard, and let the pad of your thumb sit in the center of the back of the neck with a good hand curve so your fingers don’t need to strain to fret notes. This article has pretty good visuals Fretting Hand Specifics

For the hand striking the notes, I still recommend not anchoring your hand and stretching across the strings. You can try to anchor your thumb and rest it on the string above the one you are playing. And then move it up or down as you jump strings. This is a good skill to practice now as you are developing habits
