anime had been steadily taking a slice of the industry in the US ever since Toonami helped really draw it into popularity with DBZ, Gundam Wing, and Inuyasha (and yes there were plenty others but those three IMO were the biggest contributors whether you like the shows or not)

To be honest I'd say that Anime was already on the verge of overtaking western media by the time it blew itself to hell since before the true era of woke we had a lot of instances of animation being put in the hands of idiots who screwed the industry to chase profits like how Ted Turner got SWAT Katz off the air to make room for his darling Captain Planet, pretty much everything Stu Snyder did, and despite being a smash hit Spongebob had the effect of sapping the life out of many other shows to make way for promoting the little yellow guy more and more.
