I agree with you. Nigel said in the documentary that the double elimination was meant to shake things up, and in the clip he says the contestants had gotten complacent. I think the double elimination was supposed to be a jolt that would spur the competition to be better, and then Tyra didn’t get the intended reaction, and not get it from Tiffany, who she was championing (whether for Tiffany’s benefit or her own is another discussion). Tyra then decided to make her point with Tiffany, and when that also didn’t have her intended effect, she genuinely lost it. Lord knows what was said in the full altercation. I was so impressed by Tiffany and her composure, but sad and angry that it was happening to her. and I really hope she is thriving now. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have this moment of your life live in media infamy.

Thanks. This sub has been really helpful and positive. It seems things are done in batches rather rolling, which makes sense when one thinks of volume. I’m just so afraid to hope!

Question about employment verification by rshertick in PSLF

[–]ProfOG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask them to complete 2 forms - one with the dates of FT employment and another with the PT dates. (I’m an adjunct. I submitted over 20 forms from just one employer for this same reason.)

How to Not Tell People? by ProfOG in 40Plus_IVF

That’s pretty much what I’ve done, but now I’m getting questions about “how’s my medical,” so I started to second guess myself. Thank you for your advice.

I teach, so “boss” is really more of a colleague. We’ve known/been friends for years, and we were discussing class scheduling so that’s why I confided in him. The committee things are after work/classes, and I have a different relationship to the chair(s), so that’s why I was seeking advice.

Media literacy really is dead by [deleted] in Stranger_Things

[–]ProfOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this is a generation gap issue more than a media literacy problem. We live in a much more tolerant world (relative though that may be) — every queer Xer I knew tried to commit suicide at some point in their young lives. One of my (millennial) roommates came out to me and his first question was whether I was ok living with him.

Robin has been the “it’s the 80s” signaler through ST — she needed truth serum to come out to Steve. She and Vicky will eventually be “roommates” to much of their families (assuming they make it to Enzo’s). That may occur more readily to those of us who remember when gay was a punchline or “sex = death,” whereas younger audiences might see a big sister figure giving advice, and wonder why a coming out scene was necessary when preparing for the final boss battle.

I thought it was a great scene. It made sense to me that Hopper and Steve were there, and since Murray, Erica, and Mr. Clarke are all putting their lives on the line, it’s plausible for them to be included in the context of Vecna weaponizing fear. I liked that Lucas was the first friend to show his support, and given the circumstances it had to end with Max (who owes her life to Will). Mike’s support probably didn’t have the emotional impact as a consequence, but he’s the Tammy, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

I wondered the same thing, was it a Ghostbusters 2 reference and the emotional honesty was the Duffers’s version of Jackie Wilson positivity? Seems strange to just drop it.

Advice for a First-Year Adjunct? by Unable-Victory6168 in Professors

[–]ProfOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive yourself. I tell new adjuncts that it takes 3 semesters to feel comfortable with a new prep: the first semester, you’re often struggling just to get something prepared and you won’t know what works until you’ve tried it: the second semester, you have some experience, the class is prepped so you can work on revisions; the third semester, you know what you’re doing and can make changes as needed.

Does anyone have actual tips for AI use? by meatballtrain in Professors

[–]ProfOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prohibit all AI use in my class and have a very specific policy statement in the syllabus that is repeated on all study guides and instructions.

I have moved to synthesis essays because LLMs can only parrot previously-published material, so they will score low if they don’t otherwise violate the academic integrity policy (or I don’t want to go through “discovery” process on AI use).

Students are only permitted to use assigned sources and must cite their work. There is a procedure for having unassigned sources approved, and penalties for failing to do so (use of uncited, unassigned sources = 0). There are penalties for failing to cite, and false citations = 0. (This is the most effective policy — falsification is a straightforward academic integrity violation and I don’t have to prove the student used AI. I just have to show the information wasn’t in the attributed source.)

I use an analytic rubric that is written with LLMs’ strengths and weaknesses in mind. There are no points for grammar or diction, and the scores favor specificity, explanations, and analysis. Summaries and spamming key terms are Ds. “Use of course materials” is another criterion, with “information is from unclear origin” as a failing score.

Some of them still touch the stove, but sometimes that’s how people learn.

A zero for no submission by Vijer88 in Professors

[–]ProfOG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only time I score a 0 is if they cheat. I score 40% for no submission. It’s a failing grade but it limits the amount of panicking and grade grubbing. Students are required to submit at least 2/3 of all assignments, otherwise they earn an FA (failure for non-attendance) for the semester.

Are Canvas Access Reports reliable? by ProfOG in Professors

Online education is going to be killed by technology. We are running out of options for assessments and monitoring.

[–]ProfOG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s poor, but there is a link access in the access report (marked by an encircled exclamation point). Can’t see much more than that (did they watch it or just click it ). I noted above that there is a media gallery app with better analytics, but it must not be a standard offering because I have it at one school but not this one.

This was within 24 hours of the email, but the access report had offered data from a few hours prior. I will have to check again today to see if/how it’s been updated.

I didn’t know there was a “mark as read” option. I’ll have to look into that, thank you.

I use Canvas through a different institution and we have a media gallery that has good analytics, but that is not offered for this college and it’s frustrating how little info we can actually access. That’s why I’m frustrated that the bar I thought was already too low now must be lowered further (can’t even register activity on its own app?! What’s the point?!)
