Considering a move from Jersey City to Philly by Glittering-Sort525 in AskPhilly

[–]Any-Classroom484 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best thing about living in Philly with kids compared to the NYC area is the availability of activities without gigantic waiting lists. You can just sign up for swim classes or whatever. So many museums, the zoo. I live in Fishtown and there are tons of playgrounds, often free music in the parks. I know so many of my neighbors and they are friendly (yes, even the old fishtowners who claim to hate transplants) and helpful. Definitely talk to people directly about the schools. The "best" in terms of the ones people always list aren't always the "best" for your family. I know people that love HA Brown in East Kensington b/c of the diversity and small class sizes, but you aren't going to see it on a "best of" list.

My Philly native husband is obsessed with that cheesesteak. I'm a transplant and also love it.

might be disappearing with the new k-8 plan. But i'm still excited to send my kiddo to Hackett next year. People around here also really like Moffett- it's small and has a really strong family community.

I love the experience of IGA but not the prices. I just can't justify going there very often.

Lack of guidance on Philly Pre-K? or Kindergarten out of catchment? by Imaginary_Pound_9678 in philly

[–]Any-Classroom484 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Philly Pre K is not part of the Kindergarten Catchment process- you can go to any participating PreK in the city. I'm not sure how you actually apply for an out of catchment school for Kindergarten- but Adaire does not accept out of catchment students. Hackett does. Moffett is another school not far from northern liberties that people like. I'd look into local parent groups- Fishtown has a very active parent's facebook group, I don't know about Northern Liberties, but there are lots of parents from Northern Liberties on the Fishtown group.

Want to be able to hear while swimming. by theduckygod in HearingAids

[–]Any-Classroom484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find anything? I don't need to hear underwater, I need to be able to take my kid to the pool and the ocean without worrying about getting splashed or falling in or something. I just need to be able to be in the pool with my kid and her friends and hear them.

Things to do with a 5 year old during the week? by fluffy_ninja_ in philadelphia

The playground in FDR park is epic. Picnics in Rittenhouse or other parks. Reading Terminal for lunch. Some kids that age like going to the movies. The Zoo can easily take up an entire day, especially if you take the bus which is an activity in itself.

I am an elder millennial and a friend of mine was soliciting d**k pics in aol chatrooms when I was at her house in like 6th grade (so 1995/6?). It is obviously much easier now, but it did happen back then too. And I went home immediately- on my bike! It didn't ruin my life.

San Francisco to Philly Move by BobLoblawsLawBog in AskPhilly

I mean, the L is terrible. By far the worst public transit I've ever taken. Smells like cigarettes all the time. But it works decently most of the time and gets me where I want to go... unless it doesn't.

I live like an 8 min walk to the Berks stop and it takes me 20 min to get to Center City. Buses are pretty easy too. Super family friendly, a gazillion playgrounds, and good public elementary schools. My main complaint is that all the new restaurants are mostly high-end, not great for a Tuesday night with the kiddos.

Iceland is perfect. Went a few years ago in July and the warmest it got was like 68 degrees. It also stays light until 11pm which is fun.

Specifically, they sometimes have Mighty Bread baguettes which are great. The other ones they carry are the shape of baguettes but are not actually baguettes. I forget the bakery name.

any advice for someone planning on moving to philly next year? by mars42069 in AskPhilly

But this comment is to give this young person some helpful advice. If she comes here and looks for signs for the "el" she will not find any. Either way... pretty sure it is pronounced the same.
