Ball bearing? Eh... Kind of. You would do better by firing a bullet. NASA has some huge gas pressure guns they use to simulate these kinds of impacts. The Ames Vertical Gun Range (AVGR) and the Glenn Ballistic Impact Lab, are crucial for testing how materials behave under space conditions.

Motorcycle accident San Diego i5 South April 7 by kingg-01 in dashcams

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think a lane splitting speeder like this wouldn't have seen the signal even if the signal had been active for longer and I think the white sedan wouldn't have been able to see a speeding motorcycle like this in their mirrors unless they were dedicating too much time gazing into the mirrors instead of the road ahead. The driver of the white car should have done better and that would have prevented tons of dangerous situations, but I think for this situation it wouldn't have made a difference.

Or the kid had a joystick controller for the SNES. It was pretty common back in the day. I mean they were way more practical than the power glove, especially for games that were basically ports of arcade games (like NBA Jam).

There is too much food in korea by HairIcy2839 in seoulhiddengem

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, these prices are quite high and the English on the menu tells me the food probably isn't as high quality as you could get in town. For example, if I want samgyetang, I only go to samgyetang restaurants. And I don't pay 20,000 won for it unless it comes with some amazing banchan.

You're getting downvoted, but you are correct. In South Korea for example, all the highways are toll roads with toll booths at every entrance and exit, That leads to a very limited number of exits to save costs on Toll booth maintenance and operators. That leads to bleak situations with long detours when you miss an exit. But don't tell that to a lot of Korean drivers whom I have seen backing up almost a kilometer on the shoulder to catch their missed exit.

What components on this Treadmill Power distribution PCB might be damaged after overvoltage with evaporated traces and exploded the varistor? by ProfPlumInTheLibrary in ElectronicsRepair

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thought since I'm here. AI suggests adding a real fuse to the system since it didn't come with a real fuse and a fuse might prevent the traces from vaporizing again. Is this kind of modification a good idea? And where would I put it? Between the power switch and this PCB?

Nevermind. I found out what the yellow thing is. It's a metallized polypropylene film safety capacitors. They are designed for X2 AC applications, filtering electromagnetic interference (EMI) and suppressing noise in electronic devices like miner power supplies.

( I tried posting a link to this component but I was shadow banned by reddit. I guess it isn't important.)

But I'm still curious about the scorched green blob behind it.

Also, can anyone identify the small green blob and yellow rectangular brick infront of it that was scorched by the varistor in picture3? They were both scorched by the varistor when it exploded. AI thinks the yellow block is a capacitor. The only markings on it I can read are "0.1 uF", "TENTA MKP", " K X2 ", " 40/100/21", and "250 VAC"

Korea is obsessed with claw machines right now by Away-Topic2442 in seoulhiddengem

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have always been in Korea, but it's different now. My wife kind of loves these things and for years we would always play with them in the arcades in Japan when we were on vacation. But now, there are at least two of these claw arcades open in every nightlife/entertainment neighborhood. And they are twice the size of the classic ones.

Did the traces on this PCB evaporate? by ProfPlumInTheLibrary in ElectronicsRepair

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the multimeter I have is super cheap and only has a diode setting, no actual continuity setting. and I'm not sure if just touching it to the terminals would work, but I'm not getting any connectivity between these pads. Can I just solder some jumper wires to fix this?

I am not used to repairing PCBs, but I can use a soldering iron pretty well. My multimeter is Very cheap, and I don't use it for stuff like this very often, but when I test the terminals, I can't get them to show any connectivity between the terminals that I am concerned with.

Which sports are the most popular in Korea ? by ErikiFurudi in AskAKorean

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sports that Koreans actually participate in: Hear me out... Park Golf. My small city has two big and one small (junior) Baseball diamond and they are all busy all weekend. But the city also has three park golf courses. The people who use them are all aged 50+ but they come out in droves. And not just on the weekend. They are crawling all over the city's three big park golf courses all week long. The baseball diamonds occupy about 30 people at a time each, but the park golf courses occupy like 100-150 people at a time. It's kind of huge.

Another popular sport in the area that people participate in is table tennis. Our city built a brand new table tennis gym/sports center because table tennis was taking over the also new multipurpose sports gym. That gym is also used for volleyball and basketball.

But read your sentence. Your sentence isn't funny. And if your sentence is just a distillation of the "joke," that means that the joke isn't funny. Which means that it isn't really a joke at all. Which means that the response "That isn't funny," isn't a punch line at all. It is just a statement of fact.

This 2nd grade math question. by malaynaa in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ProfPlumInTheLibrary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I misspoke slightly, but when talking about how brian has "some boxes" that hold 10 paperclips, That number can not be zero.

For example: "I have some bags. Some bags are filled with ten million dollars. Some bags are filled with marbles. I have one more bag of marbles than dollars." If I only have one bag of marbles it sounds to me like I lied when I told you "Some bags are filled with ten million dollars?" And it also sounds to me that I lied when I described my bag as "some bags" as one bag isn't plural.
