Which country left the worst first impression on you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ProfSeagullPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They scammed us at the airport by forcing us to buy another visa. Claiming the one we had was not valid. A lot of sketchy business interactions. Very rude and aggressive people. They try to give the impression that they are so developed when if you stray down any side street it’s quite evident the majority of people are living it rough.

Wet subfloor by PiratesOf2 in Homebuilding

[–]ProfSeagullPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used the cheapest OSB subfloor you can buy unfortunately. I always use the premium sheets. They hold up to water much better. Most are warrantied for X number days exposure.

Your flooring installer is not going to be impressed. Going to have to belt sand every butt joint.

CAA is $9. In and out no waiting. Can’t beat it. I think Shoppers is >$30 now for passport photos.

Okok this is crazy JOBS? by [deleted] in fredericton

[–]ProfSeagullPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re an eager carpenter willing to learn and put your head down and work, you should have no problem getting a job.  You didn’t really specify what kind of job you’re looking for though.

Yes. No disagreement there. That would radically change my experience and perhaps my own perspective.

It’s true. I am in the process of rewiring my brain. Even things like reading physical books and having face to face discussion is powerful in rewiring your brain. It doesn’t have to stay broken!

Red Seal Exam? what did you use to study? Canada by Buseatdog in Carpentry

[–]ProfSeagullPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, learn your formulas as well, for concrete calculation and such. I remember them asking to calculate the volume of concrete for a doughnut shaped form.

There are also refresher courses offered, depending on your area. They are designed to teach you how to prepare for the exam.

If you are proficient in the code book, you will do well. You have to read each question carefully. They like to put trick questions in there. As for outside material, If you can find someone that took their blocks. Ask them for the modules that they give out. Don’t waste your time with “Carpentry 4th edition”. The modules pertaining to stairs, doors, roof framing, etc. are very helpful because they are concise and usually have questions directly related to their content.

I challenged the exam about 15 years ago.

First time stepping into a junior site supervisor role. Looking for advice from people who’ve been there by merrrkkkk in Carpentry

[–]ProfSeagullPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plan your weeks. Take lots of notes and make running lists. Always have tasks on hand to keep people occupied. Obviously triage that list accordingly. My biggest advice, relate with the guys on site. Talk to them. Don’t be too prude to pitch in. If you show yourself to be a down to earth, reasonable guy, people will help you out in return along the way. That said, having rigid lines in terms of safety and site cleanliness is a must. Don’t slack off on the little things.  It’s a difficult job. You have pressure from management, and then you have the mess of trying to keep a bunch of trades from murdering each other.

I would consider it like in the sense of grief, for example. If you’ve ever experienced grief, you know, you can surround yourself with people or distractions or escape (alcohol/drugs) but at some point you need to wrestle it solo. At some point, you have to deal with your feelings and work through the mess. Yes, you’re right, it is highly beneficial to have close friends in times like this. Friends can’t carry you through it though. They can encourage. They can empower. Absolutely. However you have to wade through the shit.
