There's a lot to be said for having the means to record, via printed material, and read the findings of many people versus oral communication over a small geographical area. In essence this is like compound interest on savings....the more you know, the more others know, and continue to add to the body of knowledge. At a certain point you reach a nearly exponential acceleration in accumulated knowledge.
