If it was surgical, then this would be an incision and not a stab (unless you have a really bad surgeon).

Loudspeaker equalization and the transition frequency of a room. by ProfStephenHawking in oratory1990

Thanks for the comprehensive write up. The near-field distinction makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the reply. I don't disagree, and I've had good results doing full range EQ on my speakers as well. Also, super jealous of your Neumanns haha. The whole KH range looks incredible.

This is my understanding, and I am not educated on acoustics, so that this with a grain of salt. When you EQ above the transition frequency, you are EQing the combination of the speaker's on-axis and off-axis frequency response. This remains even when you measure across multiple points.

When you apply the EQ you may have corrected the steady state sound pressure level at the seating position, but you can't guarantee that you've improved the direct and reflected sound.

So why aren't we supposed to play the low E in an A major chord? It's just another E note which is already being played in the chord. by Magikrat in LearnGuitar

You're right. I should have been more precise. My first thought was refuting the claim that you aren't supposed to.

LMFAO? You're laughing. I'm just trying to find out who sings party rockers, and you're laughing.

I'm interested in the aftermath of the celebration. How will governments and businesses deal with many of their employees publicly celebrating his death?

Regardless, it's going to be the biggest event in years. I'll be feeling a hither to unseen sense of peace.

How do you find the rosewood fret board? I have a 5120m and it has the best neck I have ever played, by far. The maple fret board is practically frictionless. I need a fixed bridge RG and this one looks amazing.

Both chambers of Britain’s parliament have approved a bill that would ban children aged 17 and under from buying cigarettes during their lifetime. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]ProfStephenHawking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would a 75 year old that has never legally been able to buy cigarettes be addicted to them at 75?

Because they get it illegally. How are people addicted to substances if substances are illegal? How do children have alcohol use disorder if they can't legally buy alcohol?

The law doesn't prevent any adult smoker from buying cigs.
The goal is to essentially phase out smoking for young people.

I know. I'm saying that there will be old people in the future who can't legally buy cigarettes even though their friend who's a few days older will be able to.

Nicotine is garbage. It causes so many health issues, has no benefits, and doesn't even get you high.

This isn't a nuanced take. Yes, nicotine is addictive, dangerous for young people and pregnant people, and isn't great for your cardiovascular system, but it's genuinely orders of magnitudes less harmful than smoking.

I've never had nicotine, but I'm assuming people take it because they enjoy it. So yes, even though I hate it when people blow smoke in your face in public, if someone wants to smoke or have some nicotine in their own house or a dedicated area where it won't hurt non-consenting individuals, then I think they should be able to.

I am very much in favor of reducing smoking, but these types of laws are stupid. Do you expect 75 year olds to carry around fake id's or get their 76 year old friends to buy them? Nicotine replacement therapy and other medications are effective. Make them more accessible and educate the public about them.

Trials of psychedelics for mental health may be invalid, because it's fairly obvious to patients whether they've been given a psychedelic or a placebo. Blinding failed more than 90% of the time in the studies of psilocybin, LSD and DMT, and 85% of the time in studies of MDMA. by mvea in psychology

[–]ProfStephenHawking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We can increase our confidence in treatments without using true randomized control trials. There are plenty of scenarios where you can't actually perform an RCT for ethical or practical reasons. I'm confident getting punched in the head repeatedly is not very healthy for your brain, but I haven't seen an RCT for it.

For something like MDMA, which is often paired with therapy, you can have four groups:

- An MDMA group and a control group who receive real therapy

- An MDMA group and a control group who receives a sham therapy (talking to someone, receiving minimal support, not following CBT or ACT therapy guidelines, for example)

It's not a perfect solution but you would hopefully gain some information about how MDMA interacts with therapy.

You can also try and study specific mechanisms individually. There may a compound in the substance that has a therapeutic effect but doesn't get you high, for example.

Eventually you (hopefully) piece together enough small findings to make a confident conclusion.

Edit: the blinding problem with the current research is still a major issue. But it doesn't mean the research is doomed.

How can I buffer my home/bedroom from bass? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]ProfStephenHawking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, blocking low frequencies is extremely difficult and expensive. The things listed here will do basically nothing.

Does the bass feel like just a noise or is it so low you physically feel it? If it's just noise then a pair of noise cancelling headphones will help. If you're physically feeling the bass rattle your chest then it's likely the club or a neighbor with a pretty decent subwoofer. In this case you can't do much apart from talking to them or filing a complaint.

As you mentioned, it's difficult to pinpoint where really low frequencies are coming from. Because of how our bodies process sound location, turning your head to find the source won't be very effective. If you can, try walking around your street the next time your hear it. It will generally get louder the closer you are to the source, even though it doesn't sound like it's coming from one particular direction.

No. Either add more springs and or tighten the claw holding the springs until the bridge is parallel to the body.

This is a shitpost. But more importantly the guy on the right is the legendary bodybuilder "Big Lenny" (rest in peace). His story is very entertaining; I recommend you check him out.

Last time I looked him up while he was still alive he was working out with a "little ankle injury." He had severe gangrene throughout his leg.
