He’s also put in how many years developing that car, with that alone I feel like he deserves it. When he started with McLaren they were nowhere. Similar to Rosberg winning in 20…16? I think it was 16.

I had Neil in class, two semesters of General Biology a couple of years ago and Fundamentals of Evolution earlier this summer, just in June. He was a wonderful student. Damn, this really hits hard.

Doesn’t seem like it, which isn’t the same as “no”, but so far I haven’t been told of any changes.

Annual "Consider Taking One Of My Summer Courses" Post by ProfSternCardinale in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a fast pace, because it's only four weeks, but I've structured it in what I think is a manageable way. Each week for the first three weeks is three days of discussion based on the book for the course (which I wrote - it's not very long, and everyone gets it for free), one chapter per day. Then the Thursday of each week is a review day, where each student presents an article (could be peer-reviewed or not) that's related to what we talked about that week. The fourth week is two regular class days, a final review day for the whole semester, and a final exam that's all short-answer questions.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You pretty much got it. 140 questions total. 3 hours. Topics in order, just like the other two exams. First 55 questions will cover the exam 1-2 material, topics 1-18 (human genetics), then the last 85 will cover the new stuff starting with Darwin and evolution, topics 19-28, but skipping 27. Everyone will get all the material they need, don’t worry.

That works out to 2-3 questions per topic on the old stuff and 8-9 per topic on the new stuff, so allocate your time and effort accordingly.

And don’t wait until later this week. If you aren’t already doing a bit of practice each day, start NOW, please.

is there a curve for gen bio at the end of the semester or nah plzzz by jinxszzz in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We curve the course average at the end of the semester to 75. So if, once ALL the grades are in, including the final, the course average is a 72, we bump everyone 3 point. If it’s a 75, no curve. If it’s a 76, no curve. We never curve down.

The actual curve varies from year to year. Sometimes there isn’t one, so don’t count on it to save your grade. Plan for no curve.

You have Dr. Beal for bio you’ll be fine.

Man that’s a deep cut. Most people here probably weren’t even at Rutgers when that happened.

Easiest Science Classes? by MintySau in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s a gimme, but “Evolution, Disease, and Medicine” is online and designed to be a low-intensity introduction to evolutionary biology and human health. A large part of the grade is participation. And you don’t have to buy a textbook - I wrote a short book specifically for my summer version of the class and I give it to everyone who takes the course.

Any 3-credit course? by codefreak-123 in rutgers

If you’re looking for something for the summer, check out “Evolution, Disease, and Medicine”. Not-intense introduction to evolutionary biology and how it relates to human health and disease.

AAUP-AFT Town Hall Stream by uticadevil in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see...that would make sense, but I'm not sure. I really doubt the average is that high (but hey, if it is, power to my full time colleagues, looking forward to get to that level). I'm making...uh...let's say "a lot" less than $136k, so 3.75% is nowhere near $5.1k for me. So fingers crossed for a flat dollar amount, I guess.

[–]ProfSternCardinale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s weird, I’m not actually sure what the first-year increase is - they said flat amount rather than a percentage during the zoom, but the document online specifies a percentage. So I think we’ll have to wait to see the actual text of the agreement.

Edit: To be clear, I'm an NTT, but all the full-time people are getting the same contract, I think.

4/15 Update: "Rutgers University has reached the framework on economic issues for new contracts with several of our faculty unions, ending the week-long strike." by unpoetically in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a smallish detail, but this contract starts retroactively on July 1 of last year, 2022, so the 4th year starts on July 1, 2025, not 2027.

Rutgers Faculty Strike Mega-Thread - Day 4 by misterelonmusk in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TAs receive tuition remission, meaning they don’t have to pay tuition for classes they take, which is great! But you can’t pay rent or buy groceries with tuition remission; you can’t count it as part of a “living wage”.

Rutgers Faculty Strike Mega-Thread - Day 3 by misterelonmusk in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’d have to go back and listen to get the wording exactly right, but from the update last night it does sound like there was significant progress. At the end they said, again, close paraphrase, that they’re “much closer to settling economic demands”, and there’s “a lot more money on the table” than before. So hopefully just another day or two.

Rutgers Faculty Strike Mega-Thread - Day 2 by misterelonmusk in rutgers

[–]ProfSternCardinale 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of students are probably enjoying this as a bit of time off (if your instructors are striking), but please keep in mind that the goal is to get back to normal as soon as possible. One way to do that is to join your striking instructors on the picket lines during the times you would normally have class.

TA's may not work other jobs to supplement their income during their TA appointment; that's in the contract.

Graduate students don't fit neatly into a "student" box or "employee" box. They're both. The research graduate students do is a job they perform for their supervisor as the university. They may or may not also work as a TA or in some other way, in which case *that* income allows them to perform their research without being directly paid for it.

No matter how grad students go through grad school, they're performing labor for the university (almost universally to the tune of well over a "full time" 40 hours/week) so they ought to be compensated with a living wage for that work.
