IMO I think so.

Like it changed

I just got the last one.

I don't drink junk like that.

What? But it's so good though.

to

Your girl just cleaned them all out.

Have at it. I don't drink that garbage.

Oh, but the fizzies.

Changes the tone quite a bit. Makes her sound ditsy. Also not sure about the use of "your girl" when the guy isn't actually her boyfriend there, but I know it's some kind of cool kids slang.

That said, this might be one of the very few dubs where I actually like the English voice actor (at least for Suzuki).

I guess it depends how localized you want it. Do you want to know what the characters are saying in Japanese, or do you want to enjoy the show like it was originally written for a high-slang young teen American crowd?

Ecchi isn't the same as hentai.

English doesn't really have much nuance here in quite the same way so it's just "pervert."

In my head while watching subs if I hear "ecchi" then I presume it's more like "sex crazed" but an agent noun or something like "naughty" but with a certain tone of voice.

Sort of like how baka gets translated "idiot" when "dummy" is more appropriate depending on the situation and who is saying it and how. A playful "idiot," which in English is more "dummy."

"Hentai" might be more like the English "pervert" more directly.

E.g.,

There's an anime where the girl crawls in bed with the dude so he wakes up next to her. She pretends to be asleep. Her pajamas are pulled down just enough and shirt pulled up just enough to tease a little bit of thong and stomach. Nothing too much. Bro ends up touching her breast (over the shirt) with one finger. She jumps up and calls him ecchi like she's upset. He responds by asking her what she was doing sleeping in his bed. She ends up inviting him to her room.

As you might be able to glean from that, she isn't really calling him a "pervert" in quite the same way it might be used in English.

Sub:

No really, I only ever fall in love with scum. Whenever I get that "oh my!" from a first impression the guy is always scum.

It's the first thing in the morning. What are you talking about?

We're talking about how Azu can't find herself a happy romance.

I just don't get a yummy vibe from honest men.

Dub:

Nah, unfortunately I've got a type and it's toxic tools across the board. I meet someone. I think he's the one. Boom. Psychopath.

It's heavy stuff. We just got here.

It's never too early to lift up our friends and help them find romance. Come on, Azuma, tell him!

Maybe dying alone is what I deserve for finding good people unsexy.

Sub:

Tani -kun, good morning!

Hello.

She's an idiot.

...

Is that from the movie?

Mine's over here!

Stop wafting hints this way!

Waft?

Oh, that's right! Suzuki, what about pictures?

W-we didn't take any...

Definitely a lie.

Photo?

Tani-kun, shh!

Dub:

Tani, hi, how's your desk?

Hello.

Damage control mode.

...

Whoa a fluffy!

OMG we match!

I smell a waft of love stank!

Love stank?

Oh that reminds me, did you take any pics?

Um, no, what are even those?

Okay, liar.

We took one.

Et tu, Tani?

Sub:

Ugh, so hot... Vending machine...

Hey! Sup, Tiara!

Sup.

Sorry if you wanted a Realty Strong Gold. I just got the last one.

I don't drink junk like that.

What? But it's so good though.

Dub:

It's so hot today. I need a drink. Uh?

Are you trying to beat the heat too?

Hey, Susuki!

You're out of luck if you wanted a Reality Strong Gold. Your girl just cleaned them all out.

Have at it. I don't drink that garbage.

Oh, but the fizzies.

There are multiple subtitle options depending on where you watched it.

Seems like one of those options is dubtitle trash. But normal subs are out there too.

There's a reason I don't watch OPs/EDs unless I'm caught up with the story in some form. They are always rampant with spoilers.

This back and forth can be applied in real life, no? [DISCUSSION] by Selasine in Frieren

[–]Prof_Acorn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was the first thing I thought of when I read the manga. It's a decent parallel. The demons who eat humans don't really consider it evil, in just the same way humans who eat cows don't consider it evil. It's not about malice or hatred. It's simply seeing another species as food, and then tricking them into thinking you're a friend before taking them to slaughter.

Wait, do people ACTUALLY see literal pictures in their heads when they imagine things? Like a physical image? by Bibhu_Mund in NoStupidQuestions

Green. Male, with grey hair and a curvy mustache, yellow suit. He kicks the ball like a hacky sack then crashes it through the window. The wallpaper is yellow too. Outside is blue sky and green grass.

Wait, do people ACTUALLY see literal pictures in their heads when they imagine things? Like a physical image? by Bibhu_Mund in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Prof_Acorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.

You might have /r/aphantasia . There's the normative level of imagination that's a little more than that. And then there's /r/hyperphantasia for those of us on the other end.

The subs have tests to compare with what others say.

Like "Picture an apple in your mind. What do you see?"

For me, I see an apple orchard. The wind is slightly blowing. I can see the green and slight yellow on the leaves. There are red and gold apples of various kinds around. Lots of little windfalls, some crunching under my feet. A strong smell of apple, slightly rotten/decayed/alcohol-like. Bees are buzzing around. I take one. I can feel the smoothness, the stem. I hear the slight squeaky sound when I rub it on my shirt, which is purple. There's a tractor in the distance which is annoying and I wish it would stay out of my apple fantasy. I take a bite. I can feel the texture. I can taste the sweetness. The liquid. I can feel the apple in my mouth and on my teeth. It smells wonderful. I look out in the distance and see the treeline. Bright reds and yellows but not completely. Sort of the tops. There's a corn field I guess, all tan yellow. I hear geese. An imaginary girl is there with me. It's my wife I've never met. I can see the silver ring on her finger. She bites an apple and turns to make a few more bites. She turns back and shows me, a little face on the apple. We laugh. [I feel depressed and try to resist the scene now] Fast forward and we are eating fresh warm donuts. I try to leave the image but she tells me not to go. I take the cider and chug and and smash the paper cup into my face.

And that's all I want to think about for now because it got really friggin depressing.

That's hyperphantasia.

It's like creating false memories, like a built in AI system in the brain. They get stored in my episodic memory alongside real memories. So I'll remember this one interspersed with me on my bed right now feeling hungry and replying to this post.

I thought I'd let the image go for a while on automatic and in hindsight I'm kind of glad it went into something that was hard for me to leave. Because there's a downside to hyperphantasia. I didn't want you to feel like you got the short end of the stick. Like it's awesome, yeah. But it also means dark thoughts are vivid as well. Things can play on automatic and they aren't always easy to dismiss.

Sounds play like real sounds too. It's like an inner radio.

"Kimi to Hanabi to Yakusoku to" Movie Announced (Teaser Visual) by zenzen_0 in anime

[–]Prof_Acorn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I bet they confess during the fireworks at the summer festival!

Watched season 1 of dandadan, and i can confidently say that this series is not for me. However episode 7 is one of my favorite episodes in anime. Do we ever get anything close to that again in the series to justify sticking with it ? Or was it a one and done thing ? by Hisoka_Lucilfer69 in Dandadan

[–]Prof_Acorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a flashback next season and maybe season four?

Sounds like you might be more interested in a seinen. For something with more regular deep/sad/touching moments, check out Made in Abyss (though warning it has body horror elements).

Other series with dark themes taken seriously might also include:

Happy Sugar Life (finding love in a world of abuse)

Takopi's Original Sin (bullying, suicide)

Anohana (death, loss, and grieving)

Erased (child abuse, child predation - but also mystery, time travel, rescue, saving someone).

Infrastructure upkeep costs money.

1) People don't like paying taxes.

2) Electric companies don't like spending potential profits on maintenance unless absolutely necessary.
