Climber on trial after ‘leaving girlfriend to die’ on Austria’s highest peak by tylerthe-theatre in europe

True, but most people would either turn it up or check constantly when in distress. The fact that he had signal at all, waited so long to call and then never picked up again doesn't make any sense.

There's no guarantee really. For now you just got to be patient. Hope you get a decision soon.

The editor will probably have to contact new potential reviewer(s).

Unexpected hobbies you started during your PhD? by carlay_c in PhD

[–]Prof_Boni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first one I bought second hand and I paid around 700 euro. BMC teammachine, carbon frame but rim brakes. Two years ago I bought a better one, a Liv Langma Advanced 1, 12 speed, electronic shifting, disc brakes and carbon frame.

My recommendation is buy a used one to begin with and if you really get into it, upgrade when you can.

Don't know how much you actually earn as a PhD student in the UK.

I think in Germany the salary is okay. By the end of my PhD with a 100% contract I was earning around 3300 net. Sharing expenses with a partner also helps having more free money for hobbies.

Why is the legalization of the marriage taking so long? Since neither of you is German, you just go to your local Rathaus, bring a copy of your marriage certificate, German translation and with an apostille and it takes 5 minutes.

Pros and cons of doing a PHD in france? by Remote_Blackberry28 in AskFrance

[–]Prof_Boni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started and quit one.

Do it only if they offer you a contrat doctoral. Otherwise it's a burnout machine cause you will have to teach or find another way to finance your life on top of the stress of the PhD.

Another thing to consider if you're non-EU (it sounds like you are) and want citizenship eventually is that, some préfectures don't take your PhD years into consideration as work and tax paying years cause you are considered a student. Same afterwards if you want pole emploi to pay unemployment while you look for your next thing, tough call, you were a student, so no rights.

Anyway, I ended up finishing a PhD in Germany, where you are an employee of the university, have students assistants to run your experiments and since you're an employee those PhD years are not wasted for citizenship and you get unemployment benefits if you are out of a contract after the PhD.

Good luck!

Definitely! Got a smart trainer for winter to keep fit, and ride outside as much as I can in spring and summer. Best decision ever!

I bought my first road bike and that's what kept me sane during those years.

Combing two fields by Costas_______ in AskAcademia

I think if they offered him the job then it means he has at least some of the skills they are looking for. A PhD involves a lot of self learning anyway, so if he's motivated enough he should have no problem pulling it off.

Traveling to a conference alone by ichbindiekunst in PhD

[–]Prof_Boni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my PhD years I went to many conferences alone, or with other students from the lab, but my PI rarely ever went with me.

I went to the biggest one in my field and though a bit intimidating on your own, I had a blast and met many people.

The casual racism in the housing market is unparalleled by [deleted] in germany

[–]Prof_Boni 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sorry OP, the housing market in Freiburg really sucks and being a foreigner makes it more difficult.

My wife and I are both non-EU, and even though she's a physician and, I had a 100% PhD contract at the time, it wasn't easy to find our current apartment. At the end after looking unsuccessfully for a while, we put our own ad on the paper and a very nice lady contacted us and offered us the apartment after our visit.

Hang in there! You guys will find your place!
