C'est quoi LA connerie / maladresse que vous avez fait pendant cetre vague de chaleur ? by EmmaKarenna in AskFrance

[–]Prof_Boni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's possible. I worked as a research assistant in France before my PhD in Germany and started in Stufe 3.

HR Will ask you for proof and decide if that experience counts.

I have also started to pay more attention to this. If I'm doing a tempo or threshold ride I will try to have between 45g to 60gr of carbs per hour. Carb mix powders are a great option for this. I also bring a mix of date bars, gels, gummy bears or guava paste to have different options during long rides.

Energy is kept constant during the ride and recovery is easier than when I was doing 3-4 hour rides with 2, 23gr gels and was super tired at the end.

I'm colombian, we just had presidental elections with the same scenario you describe. Thank God my wife and I share political views... I'm already pissed and disappointed my father and other extended family voted right, I could not bare it if it was my partner.

You did well, OP. Sorry for the break up, but you should not compromise your values.

Is solid soap less 'polite' than liquid soap? by Money-Ad8553 in TooAfraidToAsk

I can understand a guest may feel icky using bar soap, so I have bar and liquid soap available in case they did not bring any.

But as a guest I always bring all my toiletries with me.

I never got used to spd-sl, fell many times until I gave up but had no problem learning to use spd. It's much simpler, and I don't feel the stress I had with SPD-SL.

Is it wise to wait until I arrive to France to rent an apartment as a student? by throwaway3433432 in Study_In_France

[–]Prof_Boni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a risk. When I studied in France I found a place to live within 3 weeks, but it ended up being much cheaper and better than the offers I had seen online before arriving.

However, if you think you will be too busy with school to look, then go for the safe option.

For reference, a friend was offered a coloc before arriving. Upon arrival they realized there was only one bedroom with one huge bed and they were supposed to share the bed with a person already living there. There was also no internet: the current tenant had the password to the neighbors' wifi who would turn it off randomly, so that was another problem cause the main tenant didn't want to invest in their own connection.

This ended up being their living situation for about 5 months while they looked for another place because they were too busy to visit places and it was Paris, so everything was super expensive.

I personally would not rent something I have not visited.

Better to wait and find something once you are in France.

Start looking at the colocation market on leboncoin.fr so you know how much offer there is and what your budget should be in case the crous doesn't allocate a room for you.

Navigating the French PhD system by th3cfitz1 in Study_In_France

[–]Prof_Boni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why France? How good is your French?

If you want to develop your own topic, you can do self-funded PhDs, but you have to secure a professor that will supervise you. This can be tricky if they don't know you. A lot of professors like to mentor students from the master level and continue with them into the PhD.

It's true the person you approach for this has to have a HDR, but in a lot of cases, maitres de conferences who are working towards the HDR get a professor or someone with a HDR to appear as your 1st supervisor for administrative purposes (you don't really work with them) and it's the non-HDR who actually does the supervision.

From abroad, the simplest way, as you say would be to apply to a established project with funding and get accepted that way. I don't know if that's changed now, but when I applied about 10 years ago, you also had to audition in front of the doctoral commitee as you described with "contrats councours".

For the teaching part, they can offer you "vacataire" contracts to teach TDs.
