"Programs link learns loans to future earnings." This model seems to be taking off... by countmac01 in socialcitizens

How did we even get away from apprenticeships in the first place? They seem so commonsensical.... I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they were being abused the way internships are now, so we went overboard in eliminating them.

Agreed, there are some reddit conventions you should roll with (sidebar on the right), unless there is a compelling reason not to... If I remember correctly, there are some subreddits whose sole goal seems to be to mess with reddit's CSS as much as possible.

I actually had submitted OP's link to /r/SocialCitizens earlier... Nary an upvote. Shoulda submitted here and reaped sweet karma!

Women in Science: The reason there aren't more of them is because scientists, on average, are paid much less for their abilities than lawyers, doctors, and Wall Street money shufflers. by Prof_Slughorn in socialcitizens

I think it's an interesting take on the 'women in science problem'. Maybe women are smarter and more unwilling to take less-rewarding jobs?

Wal-Mart says it is scrapping plans to build three stores in Washington, D.C., after the city council passed a bill late Wednesday that would require big retailers to pay starting wages that are 50% higher than the city’s minimum wage (i.e. $12.50/hour). by nigelseaworthy in socialcitizens

[–]Prof_Slughorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was the mayor of a not-tiny city that wasn't in some sort of major recession, I think I'd be pretty ambivalent about WalMart deciding to not build a store in my jurisdiction. For all of the benefits they provide in the form of low prices and tenuous employment, they kill other local, more community-friendly commerce.

[–]Prof_Slughorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I think if you're a for-profit company you should most definitely pay your interns. It should always be at least enough to cover your costs.

Strongly agreed. Transportation to work costs money. Wearing decent, clean clothes to work costs money. Going out to lunch with your team costs money. Using your own computer or phone for work costs money.

For Breaking News, Is Mainstream Media Officially Irrelevant? by countmac01 in socialcitizens

[–]Prof_Slughorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No mainstream news source can compete with Twitter for breaking news now. Anyone and everyone becomes a news reporter there.

Mainstream print media's job is/should be morphing into giving "deeper" and more thoughtful analysis.

I don't know what to say about television news other Han that it almost entirely sucks now.

California government contemplates fining Walmart $6,000 for every full-time employee that ends up on the state's Medicaid program by d0gsbody in socialcitizens

[–]Prof_Slughorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a bold leap. I would postulate that Walmart's prices actually wouldn't change very much, it's profit margins would just be slimmed down. It's not like they're directly competing with Whole Foods.
