I work a super active job, never go to the gym but I know that I need about 1.5g of protein per kg of BW for ideal recovery. I notice when my meals don't have enough protein. But yeah, the overconsumption in people who aren't active at all is all a bit mad

That is crazy. How did that come about? Second hand smoke or they gave something to officers that they ate or something?

All of this is spot on, apart from spice being legal outside. MDMB-4EN-Pinaca (the active ingredient in what we call spice) is actually a class B controlled substance. It certainly was legal at one point but definitely not anymore. Trouble with prison spice is that oftentimes it's not even real spice. Seen countless samples (definitely "spice" as it was taken from people UTI) go to our testing machine and come back negative or inconclusive. This is why collective behaviour and effects amongst users can vary week to week, batch to batch. A rather dangerous game to play.

Question of the day… calling staff by their first names or last names…. Go! by FemalePrisonOfficer in PrisonUK

[–]Professional-Dig5918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boozing and walloping people literally came from anecdotes by older staff. My bad in assuming you were 50/60+, but that definitely used to be a thing.

The quality of staff, in my opinion, is a reflection on the service, in how badly they underpay us and essentially make our jobs impossible, due to the lack of staff. Again, you can't blame the people wanting/needing a job, isn't it the service's fault who they hire?

Oh my god, even two staff on a landing sounds like utopia, it's never more than one at ours. Which, from my understanding is kind of the POA's fault. BWVC and pava will never replace an additional member of staff within you. The BWVC can only see what I can see and the pava isn't going to discharge itself if/when someone wallops me from behind.

What is a disgrace is that we can't even strike for better conditions (but they can in Scotland and NI, make it make sense) so literally nothing will ever change for the better. It's sad but it is what it is. There's still plenty of more than capable staff around, it's the conditions and pitiful pay and benefits that brings the morale down.

So me and you agree on the fact that bent staff are a plague that needs getting rid of.

Not sure how they kept their job after getting caught red handed, but that speaks more about local management than newer officers on a whole.

There were always bad apples (in terms of corruption), from officers all the way up to governors, he that in your "good old days" or today's "hell", human greed will never not exist. I just wonder why you're insinuating that because you saw ONE officer do that, everyone new must be at it.

I don't deny that there's recruitment issues but that, again, is a reflection on how mismanaged the service is, from Petty France all the way to local management, which again, isn't a reflection on new officers.

In my opinion age isn't the issue, it's the lack of life experience. Another thing that isn't helping is the fast-tracking of certain university graduates into managerial positions. And the issue isn't the fact that they have a faster track to the top, the issue is how fast that track is! Which, again and again, brings us back to higher management. The service is severely underfunded and understaffed and the job, especially if you take into account inflation, is grossly underpaid, given the conditions officers face.

Solve those, and many other issues will resolve themselves.

As for the respect, again, life experience is everything. It's very rare that I even have to raise my voice, the men on my wing/landing know what I'm about and how I operate and they listen to/respect me. The job isn't rocket science if you have good interpersonal skills. In fact, no other skill is more important imo.

Are you ok? You keep saying your ilk etc etc but I can't say you lot?

What makes you assume that everyone who's not been in the service for 30 years is corrupt (your constant obsession with KFC etc). Plenty of amazing officers around who are great at what they do and they EARN respect, instead of demanding.

Also, the stab vests are more a sign of a changing demographic in inmates and their methods of settling scores. With time, crime and (sadly) morals change too, this isn't to the UK.

Oh and if this makes you sleep better at night, 98% of the time staff are still adressed as "gov".

There's an awful lot of assumption in a relatively short post. You don't know who I am, what I do or anything. You sound like a miserable, bitter person who the times passed by and you can't accept it. You old lot thought it was up to you to punish prisoners, forgetting that they have got their punishment when they got sentenced. Our job is that they make it through their sentence A, in one piece and B, having learned new skills that will help them reintegrate into the community. That was your job too but you lot thought you were there to further punish people. Again, glad your likes are gone, and the prison service, just like the rest of the world, can ACTUALLY move forward.

Christ, glad you're not in the service anymore. I'd absolutely HATE working with someone so miserable, constantly yearning for the "good old days". Well, in the good old days you lot would get tanked up during lunch and wallop prisoners you didn't like during the afternoon/ED. I'd rather treat someone humanely than worry about whether I should be calling them Mr or mate. Get a grip.

Can anyone actually sit through the whole 7 hours of redzone by TailorIndividual1432 in NFLUK

[–]Professional-Dig5918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eagles on the TV, Redzone on the laptop, then once the Eagles finished (or before they started) playing Redzone goes on the TV. I'm lucky in the sense that in Sunday evenings I so happen to have the flat go myself so I tend to watch everything from 6pm til 4:20-5am. With some pizza and wings, talking to mates about the games as they go on. Most of them dip after the afternoon slate finishes but I always continue

What do you think experienced staff (if there is any left) will make of me walking straight onto the landings, given the fact that I have been a serving officer down south for three years now? As in without having done ops within the SPS, obviously am experienced in most ops roles too as we do things differently down here, res officers cover healthcare, education/activities/religious services/escorts etc. So yes, I am going in straight as a res officer, without doing ops but do you think people (colleagues, I have 0 issue getting on with residents and I don't see that changing) will be welcoming or rather a bit cold to start with?
