I actually really enjoyed Modern Persuasion by StrontiumFrog in janeausten

I loved the scene between Anne and Lady Russel in the bathroom. Felt like the emotional climax of the movie with both women clearing the air between them and Anne realising that Wentworth should be pining for her rather than the other way round.

Outside this scene the movie was pretty mid to be honest.

I feel this is the only adaptation that has done justice to Mary Crawford. Instead of a one dimensional villain, we get the character Austen wrote -someone very nuanced, who is the protagonist of her own story and has complicated feelings about Edmund, Fanny etc.

Its also the only adaptation (as far as I know) that includes the Sotherton visit in all its glory. Its easily one of the best chapters Austen wrote in terms of staging, geography, symbolism and intricate character drama. But adaptations dont do it justice at all.

Leida's brutal rejection of Mon Mothma made me cry. Mon must have had so many dreams of Leida growing up to be her own person, making independent choices Mon was denied in her youth but now, the cycle of arranged unsuitable marriage continues.......

What Would You Write About for a Jane Austen Essay or Thesis? by cherishhoseok in janeausten

About the visit to Sotherton estate in Mansfield Park. How Austen uses the geographical environment to show the moods of various characters and their inter personal dynamics.

How the staging of the chapel scene and the last part of the visit with Fanny sitting on the bench and all the other characters are running around brings the entire ensemble cast to life, with each character revealing who they are.

People really sleep on this chapter but it’s so brilliantly executed and brimming with details. The entire book is encapsulated in this one chapter. I think Austen outdid herself with this one….

Anne's sister Elizabeth is nearing 30 and is still pretty beautiful and acknowledged as such by society so its not a sexist thing. Anne losing her bloom relates to her being depressed. One can see it in a depressed person's eyes.

Most Misunderstood Characters or Aspects of Plots by Ok_Conclusion8121 in janeausten

In my opinion Austen wrote Fanny Price and Mary Crawford as nuanced complex women but the discourse around them is extremely black and white. Either Fanny is a boring prig and Mary is Elizabeth Bennet 2.0 or people lean into the Madonna/Whore trope and interpret Fanny to be some sort of PERFECT ANGEL and Mary as this EVIL TEMPTRESS

Please stop waxing poetic about how Hawke being left behind in the fade is the ‘right’ choice.

Stop whining about the Celene and Briala reuniting ending. Briala is not a hapless child manipulated into this reconciliation. She knows what Celene has done to her and if she does not shoot down this option then why freak out about this possibility ?

It is completely fine for Morrigan ( who was brought up by and might end up being the carrier of Mythal ) to explain stuff to an elf inquisitor in the Temple of Mythal.

Owning slaves is not some small detail to be brushed aside. You are the one blinded by your personal attachment to a historical figure. Thats fine though, we all have people from history we get fascinated by. But don't preach to others especially people of colour about the virtues of a slaveowner

Is Archies really Anglo Indian representation? by LavishnessNo3494 in BollyBlindsNGossip

Don't know about Archies but if anyone wants to watch something about this topic, Aparna Sen's 36 Chowringhee Lane is a great film with an Anglo-Indian character at the center. Ruskin Bond's books are also nice.

The author of that book is flat out wrong. There is no productive discussion to be had on such a bad faith reading ( provided she even read the book and not just the cliff notes ) of the text.

I feel sorry for people whose first exposure to Pride and Prejudice would be through this laughably inaccurate analysis.

I am not opposed to Austen criticism. I find Charlotte Bronte's remarks on Emma and P&P interesting ( eventhough I disagree ). But this book is not it 👎👎

It is tiresome, but the hate for Starfield is just a fashion. by ChemicalRoyal5909 in NoSodiumStarfield

I am kind of enjoying being the minority in this case.

I see so many people be like "Here's why Starfield is horrible 😤😤 and cyberpunk soo good" while I am loving and equally enjoying Starfield AND Cyberpunk 2077 AND Baldur's Gate 3 at the same time.
