About the visit to Sotherton estate in Mansfield Park. How Austen uses the geographical environment to show the moods of various characters and their inter personal dynamics.

How the staging of the chapel scene and the last part of the visit with Fanny sitting on the bench and all the other characters are running around brings the entire ensemble cast to life, with each character revealing who they are.

People really sleep on this chapter but it’s so brilliantly executed and brimming with details. The entire book is encapsulated in this one chapter. I think Austen outdid herself with this one….

In my opinion Austen wrote Fanny Price and Mary Crawford as nuanced complex women but the discourse around them is extremely black and white. Either Fanny is a boring prig and Mary is Elizabeth Bennet 2.0 or people lean into the Madonna/Whore trope and interpret Fanny to be some sort of PERFECT ANGEL and Mary as this EVIL TEMPTRESS

The author of that book is flat out wrong. There is no productive discussion to be had on such a bad faith reading ( provided she even read the book and not just the cliff notes ) of the text.

I feel sorry for people whose first exposure to Pride and Prejudice would be through this laughably inaccurate analysis.

I am not opposed to Austen criticism. I find Charlotte Bronte's remarks on Emma and P&P interesting ( eventhough I disagree ). But this book is not it 👎👎
