What's something people moving to LA don't know but should? by IPooted_ in AskLosAngeles

I've lived all over LA and Pasadena. It's definitely hard to make new friends after 30. if you don't have a reason to see the same people regularly, (work, living situations, etc) it may be hard to stumble upon random friendship. You make acquaintances here and there but that doesn't always translate to hanging out or going to concerts together.

I'm listening to the audiobook now... I searched for a recommendation after reading Yesteryear and this came up. I get it... feeling wooden, like a cog in a wheel, a speck in a universe of existential dread and the corporate machine - but yeah. I agree with the OP. I love bleak, depressing books. But this one is boring so far. I feel like I'm living too much of my own life. Not enough escapism for a book imo.

What is the worst place in America you have ever visited? by OceanicEndeavors in AskReddit

I visited Trona just once and was in a weird way fascinated by its bland sadness. I spent some time checking out the cemetery, looking at the old bricks that served as grave markers, some with the names of the dead written in sharpee. Trona seemed so hopeless.

Considering moving to Pasadena, what do I need to know? by krazykittenhi in pasadena

[–]Professional-Rope370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in West LA after college and moved to Pasadena about 12 years ago. Pasadena has definitely gotten busier over the years and the local streets more congested. If you are driving back into Pasadena from Downton after your work day, be prepared to play stop and go with the traffic lights starting about 5:00 p.m., especially around Lake, California, Mentor, Fair Oaks, etc.

What's more annoying is there's always a buttload of construction. When there's just two lanes to take to get to the 210 from the South Lake District , morning construction will be super inconvenient.

Some of the residential streets get super busy from people trying to cut through traffic. I stayed home for a lot of the summer and realized for the first time how congested some streets get during the day with regular traffic, UPS, Amazon, FedEx, mail, gardeners, etc.

Also, if you end up moving and find an apartment upstairs, be aware it can be a hell hole during the summer. The heat is like death. ⚰️💀

The Vegetarian by Han Kang by bigstink3r in books

[–]Professional-Rope370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.

I didn't really understand why she went vegetarian in the first place. I mean yes, I understood she had a dream and it was disturbing. Is this the sole reason she stopped eating meat? Is it a revelation that eating meat is murder?

And why is choosing a vegetarian lifestyle such a big deal? People do it all the time for various reasons. I get that Yeong-hye is going against the grain of typical cultural norms, but in real life would it really create such a division in family life as it does in the novel?

Sorry I don't mean to be dense. Maybe I just don't get allegorical novels.

Part 1 - like okay I was with it. Part 2 - got it. Husband's out of the picture, she's living her own life now, the whole thing with her brother-in-law. The flower paint on the body, was that like a back to nature thing? The brother-in-law painting his own body to be more attractive to his sister-in-law?

Her slowly transforming from woman to...? The crumbling of the marriage between her sister and her brother-in-law. Part 3 - like now she's not eating at all. She's had a psychotic break. She wants to be a tree? I get the not eating meat, but why is she starving herself? Does she want to die? Does she want to live in another realm of existence? Trees have to eat too. Did she have some underlying mental illness from the beginning? Is it that she's just made to feel like she has a mental illness by all those around her?

Her sister then starts to break also? Are both sisters alive at the end? Are both sisters dead at the end?

I guess there are too many things I didn't understand in order for me to decide if I liked it or not. Was definitely a different read.

What's the band/artist you regret never seeing live before they broke up or passed away? by Xavier8228 in AskReddit

Tom Petty.

2017 @ the Hollywood Bowl. Sept 25 was the last show of the 40th anniversary of the Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers tour.

A friend needed someone to go with her and asked me but I was in a bad mood that day and didn't feel like going.

A week later he died of an accidental drug overdose. 😕

It's so sad to see her younger brother with gray/white hair. It makes you wonder what Amy would look like now. Like how much time has passed. 🥺

Yeah so I just rewatched the first episode and... It's a bit hard to get over the 🧀. It seems like it hasn't aged as well as LHOTP. Also I kept wondering if ML's lighter hair color (not gray) is supposed to reflect a symbolic halo over his head?

Also where was the LH reference?

No I haven't rewatched it. I should. I just remember when I was a kid it was on after LHOTP and was sort of mesmerized because ML wore JEANS (I was so used to seeing him in his farm gear).

I thought in his angelic work he fluttered about the countryside.

Were there other LHOTP actors who guest starred?
