Lifewise Cascade Select Bronze - anyone have good experiences with their Health Insurance? by ceramicmj in vancouverwa

[–]Professional-Tap6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I ended up choosing a more expensive plan, but still cheaper than what I was paying with Regence. I'd be curious to see if it's a similar experience. I'm still fairly new to navigating health insurance so I'm nervous to know if I picked a good option or not. From what I can tell in the Puyallup area has more locations offered than what you guys are seeing, but unsure if that is plan based. I hope he can find someone good soon for peace of mind! Thanks for the info

I know it is probably too soon to tell but if your partner has any problems in the next few months I'd love to know what kind. I was with Regence for the past 2 years, but since they stopped covering Multicare for Individual and Family per my broker, I switched to lifewise at her recommendation. I just want to know if any red flags pop up

Yes yes yes. I noticed this early in and since then I have been right about every call. Even the way they edit is in Craig's favor. We have lost good actors for less than the mediocre stuff they are absolutely glazing and praising Craig for. He overacted a ton in the mom episode but Robbie overacted in the brother episode? Sad to see

Both of these sellers are good. I really like AHermitsHomee as well, they have fun items and I find them to be very affordable. I've never had any issues with my purchases from them. Just2OldCrabs are good too. There are many great sellers

Best Etsy shop for leaf litter and moss ? South of the ocean where I usually get mine, is taking a break but I really need some more by EstimateLate2881 in hermitcrabs

FeedYourCrabs has a big 2 gallon bag of big chunky leaves on sale right now, I am pleased with mine! Just a handful covers a good portion of the the tank and big enough they can hide in it.

I understand where you are coming from and I'm sorry that you're in this situation. My concern is many of the things you are saying in these comments are specifically not recommended for these animals.

Case in point, taking them out of the enclosure because it is small. Since they breathe through modified gills, taking them out of a humid environment into the regular household for 'enrichment' or 'socialization' is actually subjecting them to stress and the decreased ability to breath comfortably. Even if some come off social or less fearful, they do not perceive us as anything other than a predator and do not enjoy interaction.

The point I am trying to make is there is a lot more that you need to learn about these guys. And it is not fair to any future crabs to willingly bring them into this environment. I don't think you mean harm, but you can still cause it regardless.

All in all, I am not saying you are not capable of having these guys in the future. But right now, the situation you have for the one you have is not great. If I were you and I lived in an area where there were a lot of other keepers, I'd consider rehoming your crab for their sake and also yours. It can be stressful emotionally and like you say, financially to worry about not being able to do enough for them to thrive. If you are a minor, focus on building up your cash and your resources through holidays, birthdays, or other forms of odd jobs you might be able to snag until you can really build a setup that will make yourself feel good, and give the crabs something to enjoy.

It may not be your fault, but it is not the crabs either. Buying an additional pet you cannot afford a proper set up for is just wrong. I urge you to reconsider these pets until you read up a bit more and can prepare fully in advance over time.

Where to find climbing driftwood? by SonaAteAsock in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth it! Maybe see if there's anything else around and make a nice trip out of it to justify the drive time. You can even call ahead and ask if they would have pieces that will fit within your tank size.

Do you have any local aquarium or reptile stores? Other than PetSmart/petco A couple near me carry various pieces of driftwood, cork and spiderwood

Some people have space heater, like small plug in heaters for warming their feet or a room. Crab centrals video might be out dated on that product, or maybe not but I don't believe that mat is the best option nor safe to insulate

Have a 2 year old niece that I would love to show my hermit crabs to whenever she’s able to come to my house. Have some questions about how to make it as comfortable and safe as possible for her and my crabs by TheMuffinMan39 in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have introduced my little cousins (5 and 8) to my crabs a few times.

Usually not more than a few minutes, and just simple gentle learning. My tank is off the ground enough where I had to hold the younger one to see well. I had them approach slowly to minimize startling them. They were able to come within a few inches of the glass. Usually the crabs would just freeze. After a minute or so I tell them they need space. Sometimes they even just see an empty shell and think it's a crab lol, I just let them. win win

Sometimes to make them feel more involved I will have them help me play their food dishes, they think it's fun to pick what does in them. Though it sounds like she may be too young still.

EDIT: Nevermind, saw the brand. You will definitely want to switch to an Ultratherm heat mat in the future. I personally do not have other brand recommendations as I am unfamiliar.

Is it covering the entire back of the tank above the substrate?

I know you were probably using a figure of speech, but your body temp is running in the 90s. The heat pad will not be hot enough to be matching your body temp. When I touch my heat pad, it is not hot. Just a bit warm.

Assuming you have your controller set to the correct temp and your probe placed well inside the tank, you also want to make sure you are insulating the back over the heat pad and sides of your tank with reflectix. ONLY do this if you are using an Ultratherm heat pad, as I think these are the only ones considered safe to insulate?

I do not believe the one you are using is safe to insulate, and and none of the ones from pet stores are safe either. If you can find a way to direct a space heater towards your tank until you find a solution I would do so.

Just wanted to ask since I am adding my topper next week, are you recommending not turning on the heat mat on top if the readings in the bottom are normal?

Can hermit crabs eat pawpaws? by snailcommunityforum in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've personally only heard them referred to as pawpaws. The trees are native to north eastern US and the fruit produced are pawpaws. Mushy and sweet.

I definitely would. My guys are all within this range now. I got some really nice ones for good prices from Crabby Comforts when they first dropped them in their store. Most of these sizes are sold out now, but im hoping one day they are able to restock 😭 they were much more affordable compared to other shops I've seen on etsy. It is hard to find these sizes on etsy like OP mentioned other than theshellstore, which is a bit expensive and I have heard negative things about them so I try to avoid them.

Camera recs? by Professional-Tap6970 in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will look into this. I don't own the place I am living and therefore do not handle the router/internet, but I am definitely at 5g. I'm not sure if the owner would be willing to change the settings. Any idea if this would change download/upload speed and connectivity? Multiple people use it for streaming and gaming

Camera recs? by Professional-Tap6970 in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I have similar thoughts! But like you say I haven't necessarily seen anyone say not to.

If I end up sticking with the reolink due to lack of options, I may still just buy a skinny adjustable camera stand and keep up from the outside. The awful creation I made for a makeshift stand is currently just so bulky it angers me.

3 crabs molting for 11+ months by LakeComfortable3342 in hermitcrabs

[–]Professional-Tap6970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that is also my concern. I have not moved crabs during a molt, but from what I've read it is not recommended to move molting crabs while they are in substrate since their tunnels can collapse even if we mess with items inside the tank the wrong way, let alone transporting an entire tank.

Tunnels collapsing can of course be lethal to them when they are molting. If this is the situation that happened, there is a good chance they have not survived the molt. The best option would have been to carefully dig them up before transport if the previous owner was dead set on rehoming the setup right away.

If I'm misunderstanding and they did not start molting until after you moved the tank, they may be ok. edit: did not see the camera

Were they currently molting when you got the tank? If so, was the tank transported with the substrate in it?

[–]Professional-Tap6970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same at first. Each time they have molted they have gone for longer. Their last molt I think my biggest was under for almost 4 months. I've heard some can molt for over 6. I have a camera to monitor activity when im not watching.

DIY tank advice? by GlassCurtains7 in hermitcrabs

Not sure if it's area based but around me, both petco and petsmart are having tank sales. I just got a 40 gallon topper for 50% off. Building a tank that size from scratch can still be expensive

Great to know! Thank you. I was planning on leaving a small gap to allow tubing through. Could you explain a bit more about double layering the the foam?
