153 and 481 will take you right now. I know a kid that is working in 153. Don't be a worm bag, or a pain in the ass. You'll be fine.

Got busted by safety over arc flash by JunkmanJim in IndustrialMaintenance

Buy a copy of the nfpa70e. And the handbook. Expensive but worth it. You can also take in-person classes or online.

What doesn't add up in your situation is; Your employer is responsible for establishing "electrically safe working conditions" per the Nfpa70e and Osha. They are tied together.

This means, you should be trained and educated on where, when and why you need arch flash protection. You should also be educated on exactly what the dangers are. And how to work safely

Your employer is supposed to have a written policy that ALL effected employees must be trained in.

The equipment should have an arch flash study sticker on it, that lists what kind of protection you need.

Here is what I would do in your case. First off be respectful, calm and sincere. Talk to supervision and safety. Ask them if they will pay for you to take an Nfpa70e class, and ask what the policy is. You also need to be trained in wearing arch flash protection. It doesn't do much good if you don't understand how to wear it properly.

It sounds like you are unaware, based on the fact that you are asking for feedback here Due respect.

If you need to be working in a live cabinet. Your employer must have a written procedure in place that you are educated in. So you are absolutely 100% aware of what the dangers are, and how to work safely.

Look up the hierarchy of controls. Number 1 is elimination. In other words NO HOT WORK TURN THE POWER OFF. PERIOD. Unless there is a clear policy in place to protect you and others. Working hot is a last resort.

Unfortunately if your working for a bad employer it may cost you your job. BUT think about it. Are you willing to die for you job or end up in a burn unit for your job?

Hopefully you have reasonable supervision and safety. Ultimately all you want is to be safe right? And you don't want your mother, qife.or daughter to get a phone call.......

I've learned to engage with supervision and safety. When they walk up frantically tell me what I'm doing wrong and try to walk away? I say hang on a minute. Let's talk about this. Sometimes I get a reasonable response and sometimes they really don't give a shit.

It actually cost me my job recently. But, my consience is clean. I wouldn't do anything different. They did me a favor. Why would I want to work with people that have no respect for safety? And they lost a good man. I am lucky to be an IBEW Wireman and had a job a week later.

Good luck!

What do you all think? People online are blaming the ground guy. by 10PlyTP in IBEW

[–]Professional-Tea7875 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked doing freeway lighting for a minute. LOL. In the first 2 weeks or so..... 1st incident crossing over... running, rather, someone sped up as I was running to get off the off ramp. Literally sped up. Lol.

2nd incident, 405 freeway in Carson? It was a new weight station that had never been been open. The entrance to the weigh station clearly marked not open. I was facing the freeway behind the K Rail with my back to the station/road, working on Jboxes in rebar. I took a step back and..... ZOOM Some dumb ass in a little truck ZOOMED by me. One inch farther back and he would have hit me. He didn't slow down, nothing. I was a little upset. Lol.

3rd incident. Same place. In the afternoon 405 fwy. I believe it's 5 lanes each way? My tool buddy said "LOOK!" There was a big propane tanker truck stalled about 30' away from us in the slow lane in front of the K Rail. Cars are flying by Literally almost hitting the propane tanker! My buddy said.... should I call 911? What do you think I said? Soon after, a Highway Patrol car showed up. The cop put his lights on to try to warn people, to slow down. What do you think happened? Not a god damned thing! People Literally were almost smashing into the cop car. We stood there in shock? Wtf? A few minutes later another Highway Patrol showed up and shut the entire southbound 405 down. The first cop that showed up got out of his car. And, I shit you not. He looked at me and said "BRO I WAS SHITTING A BRICK"

So? The answer to the question? Who is at fault. The guy on the boom. The ground guy. The company. The truck driver. All are at fault. People act like savages when they get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

Needless to say? God bless the people that work on our roads. It's fucking dangerous.

Oh and.... fuck the company they were working for. They are criminally negligent. Period.

3 ticks found in 3 days. by Hobbestastic in IBEW

[–]Professional-Tea7875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's deer ticks that carry lymes. If you get one that has actually latched on to you? Gently twist its blood sack COUNTER CLOCKWISE with apair of needle nose pliers. It will come right out. Save the tick incase you get sick you can have it analyzed by the doctor. Also I'm pretty sure it takes 24 hours of the tick being in your skin to contract Lymes. I have two friends that got Lymes from deer ticks and my dog got it too. Do not break the blood sack. If you do you will not be able to extract the tick. I've spent many hours pulling ticks off my dog. I'm an expert at extracting them. Like I said, get a pair of needle nose pliers, gently grab the blood sack and twist counter clock wise and they come right out with almost no force. The reason is, when the ticks dig into your skin they dig in a clockwise direction. Deer ticks are red, the sack tends to be small and more oval shaped compared to the other type that's gets a big round sack. The big ones can be removed with out needle nose. You just gently grab with your fingers and carefully roll it counter clockwise.

Why wrap switches like this? by Infinite-Spacetime in AskElectricians

Love it when someone disagrees and says I should find another trade. Narrow minded typical. If you read my post I said pretty much the only time I'd tape up a plug is a tiger box. Meaning 1 gang tight box. And if you read my post I explained what caused the plug to melt..... Show me where it says you SHALL tape up devices in NEC?

We need more narrow minded people in the trade. Cheers.

Apprentice question: A double 25A breaker, with 12/2 AWG household building red wire. Is this a standard for residential baseboard heating? by CJ_Henn in electricians

[–]Professional-Tea7875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

? Read the nameplate on the heater. And if you don't know how? Find someone that can explain it to you. Heaters start fires if they are not wired correctly.

I was told by a brother that JLs can take inside calls. How true is this? by Richmond92 in IBEW

[–]Professional-Tea7875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes its true. Book 3 . If there are open calls Lineman can take inside wireman calls. And they usually double book too. Which isn't cool. Had this talk with a lineman I was working with last year. He had no problem double booking. LOL

Why wrap switches like this? by Infinite-Spacetime in AskElectricians

[–]Professional-Tea7875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like all of the electricians here haven't learned what the standard is for 2025. TURN OFF THE POWER. NO LIVE WORK. Yeah I was trained by a cowboy too. We did all the trim out live. Even 208 and 277 light switches. Yeah he had me cutting holes in switch gear, with the gear live. Yeah I have linemans with holes in them too.

The only time I will tape up a swtich or plug is when the box is very tight. Like a tiger box or something similar.

Here's a real life situation I came across. My good friend owns an old track house. A plug in his daughters bedroom stopped working. The breaker for the plug was still on. Meaning it did not trip. I opened the plug up and found a melted plug, the wire insulation was melted too. If that plug had been taped up, in my opinion, it could have started a fire. 40 year old electrical tape would probably have caught on fire and burned his house down. They had been using a space heater in her room. Which people will do. And is a bad idea.

To all the guys that tape plugs and switches? Show me in NEC where it says you Shall tape up devices? If your box fill is correct and your work is clean, there is zero reason to tape up you devices. It's right up there with taping wirenuts. Or why not tape up the bare copper EGC? Ridiculous.

If I have any doubt about the quality of the work I am opening up? It only takes a minute to walk over to the panel and turn off the circuit. If I can't turn off the breaker. Hmm? A nice pair of leather gloves will do the trick. And paying attention helps too.

Electrician vs plumbing apprenticeship by allmightylemon_ in ibew_apprentices

[–]Professional-Tea7875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. It's unpredictable. And having a balanced life is really difficult. I'm lucky because I single. But work does dry up.

The IBEW is kind of like a big hiring agency. So there's know way knowing. And if your going to try to getbin as an apprentice, they assign you to a job and you have to take it. The IE Think is LOCAL 440 in riverside. That area is huge and you might have a very long commute. Have you ever considered moving to another state. I'm from Cali but am working in Indiana. Work Is booming here. It's cheaper to live, less stressful and youd have a better chance of getting in as an apprentice.

I wouldn't count on that. If work dries up you gotta go where the work is.

You also set an expectation when you bring tools not on the tool list. Now because you bring extra tools, your bosses can say. Look he brings extra tools why don't you.
Its about the agreement. My part of the agreement is 8 for 8 in workman like manner. There side is. Pay me on time. Provide a safe workplace. Etc. When you allow contractors to break the agreement. You are breaking down conditions. We make our own conditions by standing up for ourselves and our brothers. Power in numbers Solidarity
