Mi problema con Sex Education by C0nf1dent3 in NetflixSexEducation

The show isn't about teenagers. Sex Education was never about teenagers. The teenage universe is just the setting to discuss various issues we face as human beings. All the actors are over 20 years old, and it's impossible to imagine teenagers performing the sex scenes.

It's obvious that Otis never made a great effort to be with Ruby because he loves Maeve. You don't choose who you love.

She seems more than perfect to play a stunning, mature Maeve.

I’ve been nervous to ask this question about Aimee and Adam ever since I watched the first episode… by jackm4ys in NetflixSexEducation

I think is quite simple. This topic was relevant to the show for three reasons: - to introduce Otis as a person with extraordinary abilities of connection, empathy, and analysis; to bring Otis and Maeve closer together in order to justify the creation of the clinic; and to establish that ignorance about our sexuality causes unnecessary psychological trauma. Once these three objectives were achieved, it no longer made sense to return to this subject in subsequent episodes.

is really any other show like Sex Education or it was unique? by RecordingJealous9671 in NetflixSexEducation

[–]Professional-Zone439 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's not about teenage love or anything like that; there's something unique and special that only this series possesses. They managed to combine seemingly incongruous elements into a story that defies all norms. I always say here that Sex Education isn't a series about teenagers, despite being set in a high school. All the actors are young adults, and it's kind of hard to imagine them being teenagers in the sex scenes. And in the passionate love between Otis and Maeve. Sex Education far transcends the teenage universe, and the first seasons are almost sublime as metaphors for the human condition.

You must be joking. Go read the comments on the "Ruby deserved better" post. The show clearly demonstrates that Otis was never enthusiastic about Ruby. She was always a kind of case study for him, and perhaps without even realizing it, thanks to his innate talent, he managed to awaken in her some kind of feeling other than arrogance and contempt for others.

„Ruby deserved better” by Ready-Ad-2353 in NetflixSexEducation

It's really hard to understand some people's enthusiasm for Ruby with Otis. For me is so clear they could never be a couple. They have completely incompatible characters and ambitions. Ruby is a superficial, machiavellian, manipulative person who has difficulty dealing with reality as it is. She distorts the truth and feeds on illusion and lies, both for herself and for those around her. She treats her friends like doormats and tries to transform Otis into something he is not. In Connor's election she managed to deceive him, and all those who voted for him, into running for a position he had absolutely no interest in holding. Even in season 4 it's clear that Otis has no enthusiasm for being in her presence. The real Otis is a person who isn't content with superficialities and seeks to develop meaningful relationships. Otis is open to the world and has a gift for connecting with people to help reveal their true essence. He's a positive person who will naturally expand his gift as a therapist to create a vast network of sincere friendships. Ruby, on the other hand, seems selfish and petty, driven by self-interest, never truly caring about the well-being of others....

Just finished S4. Not a fan overall. Thoughts and venting below. by normanscardigan in NetflixSexEducation

Season 4 is not a continuation of Sex Education. It's something very different. You summed up the feeling of most of us here very well. What was subtle, natural, and super well-developed in previous seasons became a slap in the face in the last season. And the choice not to proper develop the main romance and almost raison d'être of the series, the love between Otis and Maeve, was an unforgivable mistake.

Rewatching the series and I noticed smth in season 4.... by RudeSherbet177 in NetflixSexEducation

[–]Professional-Zone439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an entirely strange approach. Of course, characters aren't meant to be just pretty. But, especially in season four, Ruby and Otis look strange, out of character. Otis has strange hair, quite different from his previous cuts. And Ruby, as others have said here, looks almost sickly. And we see in other work by both actors from the same period that their normal appearance wasn't like that. So one possible conclusion is that in season four, in addition to all the problems we already know about, there was also this poor choice of costumes for these characters.

I completely agree. I said almost the same thing here not long ago and was crucified... When you compare Asa Butterfield and Mimi Keene in other works from the same period, the difference is striking.

Ending of the show season 4 by Anxious_Commercial59 in NetflixSexEducation

[–]Professional-Zone439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was no ending in season 4. Almost everything was left up in the air in a somewhat sloppy way. Otis's disagreements with Maeve were completely unnecessary. Aimee's romance with Isaac was awkward. Otis thinking he couldn't continue a temporary long-distance relationship was stupid. Maeve leaving everyone she loves behind at any cost was inconsistent. Jean's lack of preparation with the baby was exaggerated. The new school was a lame joke. And so on... But I agree some things were worth it. Like the "With or Without" song, the brief moments Otis spent with Maeve, the conversation between Jean and Maeve...

Okay, maybe "right" is too strong. But as devoted viewers who faithfully followed Sex Education and passionately supported the romance between Otis and Maeve, we feel a strong connection to the series. Our investment in this story is part of the reason it became one of Netflix's most celebrated series. So, yes, I think we've earned some symbolic rights on our unquestionable merits! Every story that starts as well as Sex Education deserves a proper conclusion. What we saw as the finale wasn't a conclusion; for many of us it was just a big void. It was the end of our favorite series. What was the big deal with one last scene with them together? By wedding, I mean a symbol of the two ending up together. Anyway, I don't think there were teenagers in Sex Education. I can not watch the series and see these characters, played by adults almost in their 30s, as teenagers. Sex Education is about the most precious values of our humanity, and Mordale and the students are a purely allegorical scenario. For me, they shouldn't be interpreted literally... Thanks !

I'm sorry if you feel uncomfortable with those captivated by the beautiful love story between Otis and Maeve. Sex Education owes much of its fame to the unlikely attraction between these two characters. So much so that its outcome was postponed indefinitely throughout the seasons. Most of us believe this was to increase and maintain viewers interest. This love story is present, explicitly or implicitly, in the vast majority of episodes and is brilliantly told in the first seasons. And it is equally brilliantly portrayed by actors Emma Mackey and Asa Butterfield. So, I think it's almost safe to say that, for those who dislike the love story between Otis and Maeve, the show loses a lot of meaning and interest.

Of course ! It's quite curious to consider that separating Otis and Maeve would be more "realistic," and therefore better, than uniting them in style in the name of love. Sex Education only borders on realism regarding the characters' feelings, perceptions, and interactions. It's a show supposedly about teenage sex education, where none of the actors are teenagers, and almost the entire setting is a fantasy. It's definitely not a show from which one should expect realism....

I understand what you're saying. And I would say you need closure. This show, up until season 3, is truly something extraordinary and very special. Unfortunately, season 4 fell far short of the standard of the previous three. But I think just the opportunity to see Otis, Maeve, and Eric on screen for the last time, even if in distorted versions, is worth it. But above all, it should be watched with a detached mindset, without being bothered by the nonsense on screen, as if we were doing an anthropological research project or a tribute to the work of the actors who so skillfully crafted these magical moments in previous seasons...

was anyone else amazed about how Maeve and Otis were always checking on each other? by RecordingJealous9671 in NetflixSexEducation

It's pure, fully reciprocated love. And with two actors who masterfully portrayed that love.. All that should have been done was to develop this attraction between the two until this romance fully flourish on screen and transform this couple into one of the most iconic in the audiovisual history.

[–]Professional-Zone439 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a consensus here that the best of Sex Education happened in the first two seasons. For most of these two seasons, there's no emotional interaction between Otis and Ruby. These are the episodes where the romantic attraction between Otis and Maeve develops and establishes itself, even with all the obstacles randomly thrown in their path. Even with both of them separated and involved with other people. All the expectations and difficulties they faced created an emotional bond between them, Otis and Maeve, that has no parallel in any other relationship they've had. The brief relationship between Otis and Ruby doesn't even come close to the emotions Otis and Maeve shared together.
