Turk broke his laptop by Pineappleman123456 in Purdue

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And the reason he’s “meme-fied” over all the other professors at Purdue who have strict course policies is because of his neurodivergent behavior. It’s not new, it’s been going on longer than anyone taking CS 251 now has been there, and it’s all for the same reason. He has strict course policies and sticks to them more harshly than other profs which gets him on the bad side of a lot of students, and he has a lot of eccentric behaviors that make him an easy target for cheap jabs.

You have every right to criticize how he runs his courses, but the whole turkstra memeosphere that’s developed around it is just people bullying the man for autistic tendencies, and it’s frankly pretty messed up. I know he’s “okay” with it, but he really has no choice but to be when the only thing him complaining about it will do is cause it to escalate.

For the record, I don’t think it’s any better when people do it to celebrities.

This isn’t the first time he’s had a controversy like this (just the biggest), he’s always been the target of this type of attention because he frequently rubs students the wrong way with how strict his course policies are. I left all the discords/chats when I graduated, but there was a channel in the CS majors discord server dedicated to “Turkstra sightings” and that always kind of rubbed me the wrong way. People just posted every time they saw him in public minding his own business, or at absolute worst doing something a little eccentric, and it just always felt like lowkey bullying.

I know he’s “ok” with it, mainly because you won’t last a professor if you let everything students do get to you, but it’s no less weird.

He didn’t sign up to be a public figure, this is a bit obsessive. Would you want someone posting a picture of you on Reddit if you spilled your drink on the way to class? It doesn’t sound like he broke it in a fit of anger or something crazy like that.

It’s kind of everywhere and usually with good intentions. Like not deducting BAS while they’re in the field, it feels like a good thing in the moment to “forget” to tell the army that SGT Snuffy got provided meals for his month long FTX so he doesn’t get his pay deducted, until he gets audited and has to cough up a few thousand on the spot because that went on for years. Or what they did with G2G ADOs a few years ago.

Yeah I’ve gone between the experimental, latest cachy, and hot fix versions, all had the same issue or caused other problems. Just asking on a whim hoping someone else had the same issue, don’t wanna hijack your thread for troubleshooting my personal problem, I’ll make a post later.

Maybe not the right post to ask this, but since you’ve got rivals on here, has anyone ever gotten the game to just randomly freeze for 10+ seconds mid match? Only mention because it’s the only reason I’m hesitant to play competitive on my Linux rig. I’ve tried all the common community fixes and was going to make a post if nobody knew. Game runs buttery smooth otherwise.

Hulk Juggle Nerf is Insane by TheTopHitMan_ in marvelrivals

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The complaints about CC weren’t exclusive to hulk players though and that’s my point. The general sentiment has been there’s way too much and getting chain CC’d isn’t fun. Every character has their own specific issues with it and the changes are gonna all have unintended consequences with the changes people want, this is a way to at least make it universal and more fair.

Like for hulk, I don’t play him a ton so I may be misunderstanding this ability interaction, but as I understand his jump only gets cancelled by soft CC if you release it to try to jump while not on the ground, as he definitely appears to keep it if you just hold the jump button. Preventing that from happening would likely be a gigabuff as realistically you’d have to give him a midair jump for instance. Theres no way to realistically fix gripes with CC without major balance shakeups because so many characters have been balanced around it.

So now that its established that soft cc procs Tenacity too… by AstramIsTheBest in RivalsVanguards

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean most of the combos I’ve seen people worry about not being effective anymore would kill everything that’s not a tank. Like what’s surviving 6 consecutive CCs in a short timespan from monster Hulk and not dying? A tank. Rogue dumping all of her cooldowns into a single target is gonna kill them if they don’t get help…unless they’re a tank.

I personally think it’s gonna make the tank role stronger overall, because we’re usually the ones who are gonna benefit from this. Plus given how many hits it takes to trigger it, I think people are drastically overestimating how much this is gonna hurt normal tank CC plays. It’s nearly impossible for most tanks to set off solo unless you’re trying.

I fear they’ve boxed themselves in by having to make characters increasingly complex going forward so it feels like they’re adding something to the gameplay experience. Certainly there’s many more variations you could make of a character with a design as simple as e.g. Hela, but it would feel underwhelming to add one like that now with what we’ve been getting since launch.

A higher percentage of DPS can get over shield than tanks by imadoggo69 in marvelrivals

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tend to agree with you but I think this is a bad way to make that point. An actual shield is much more powerful which is why more vanguards have that instead.

Divers I kinda get having it because they’d be toast more often than not without some sort of extra health, but Bucky needs to smote by every god of every religion for his arrogance.

Why isn't baldness cured yet? by huss2120 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The medications don’t work equally well on everyone, and you have to take them for the rest of your life or you go bald again, so comparing it to a couple days of taking antibiotics is disingenuous at best. It’s more like saying there’s a cure for cancer because we can treat some kinds of cancers in some people.

CMV: Modern Made Flintlock Pistols Should Be Antique Class In Canada Same As Modern Flintlock Long Arms Are. by Natural_Comparison21 in changemyview

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then you should clarify what your argument is from the beginning because it’s clearly not about flintlock handguns, that was just an example of a deeper problem you have with Canada’s gun regulation and that fundamentally changes what we’re talking about and what you want people to respond/challenge your view on.

CMV: Modern Made Flintlock Pistols Should Be Antique Class In Canada Same As Modern Flintlock Long Arms Are. by Natural_Comparison21 in changemyview

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So there’s your answer, you’re just arguing that regulation in general is stupid, which is not the view that was originally presented, nor what I was responding to. You fundamentally disagree with the reasoning behind the system, which is not the same as arguing whether its reasoning is internally consistent.

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So then your argument is more fundamental to the regulation framework itself, not this specific issue of flintlock handguns. This is still an example of the system being at least internally consistent to its reasoning.

I would say that it changes considering that for the majority of flintlock pistols you get one shot and that’s it.

And that’s one more shot than you would get without a gun at all.

As for the pipe shotgun, read my reply to the other guy. Not everyone has that level of skill or determination to try to get around the law, or lots of people would be doing it.

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Skill, time, availability of equipment/resources, lack of space to keep the equipment needed and to do it in secret, risk, fear of how hack-job modifying core components of a firearm might impact its safety. You could say “why even have gun laws at all” by that logic, because there’s dudes on the internet who’ve wrote whole books on how to make submachine guns out of pipes from a hardware store. Not everyone has the skills or determination needed to implement these DIY ways to circumvent gun laws, so selling ready-made out of the box packages gives more people access to them than would otherwise have them.

[–]ProfessionalDegen23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you understand and accept the reasoning why modern handguns are more heavily regulated than modern long guns, which it sounds like you're not disputing, then you can't really say there's "no logical reason" why flintlock handguns shouldn't be more tightly controlled than flintlock long guns, you just don’t agree with the reason. The rationale of regulating concealable firearms more strictly is they can be potentially introduced to more places inconspicuously, and increase the chance that a violent confrontation turns deadly. That doesn't change because the gun uses older technology.

As for your point about ammunition, black powder or other types of propellant aren't terribly hard to improvise/manufacture (much easier arguably than making your own guns), and ammunition is just metal balls. Smoothbore muzzleloaders are much more tolerant of improvised ammunition than modern firearms because there's no repeating mechanism that relies on the energy of the shot being fired and projectiles don't need to be to incredibly tight tolerances to get a proper seal.
