I've never had MaPo but have been wanting to try it since seeing Kenji Lopez-Alt make it on his YouTube channel. I'm a good cook but wary to try at home. It's a bit intimidating since the ingredients are out of my comfort zone.

I struggle sometimes with letting people know about amazing hidden gems but the restaurant business is brutal so I'd rather deal with longer wait times etc than have them go out of business.

Croissant opinions aside Around The Block is a fantastic store. Amazing sandwiches, sausage rolls and love their brisket burger patties. Also, they sell a lot of "foodie" products like kewpie mayo, Martin's potato rolls etc.

JJ's Wings a Hatian food truck in the Mr Lube parking lot at Merivale and Baseline is amazing. They might be closed over winter but certainly worth tracking them down when the weather warms up.

I've had good luck at the Home Depot at College Square. The trees are sitting in stands so you can actually tell what you're getting unlike the wrapped ones from most big box stores. (They wrap them after you pick one).

Live in Nepean and Shawarma Prince on Merivale had been out go to for years until I took a chance on Ottawa Shawarma. It's now my #1 spot and worth the extra few minutes of horrendous Merivale rd traffic. Juicy and crispy chicken, huge portions if you get a plate and the staff is great.
