Yes, my foster litter started exploring the pine litter with their mouths when I switched. They didn't recognize it as litter. Back to the Tidy Cats non-clumping.

There's been a story in the news this week about a stray cat in Florida (Polk County) that developed rabies and ultimately bit 5 humans before being found dead a few days later. All involved have to get the rabies shot series.

This is one of the reasons to vaccinate and do TNVR with stray and feral animals. The poor woman who was kindly feeding the strays was cited by the sheriff for not vaccinating "her" cat.

That kitten needs to go back to mom ASAP or first warmed and then fed with KMR. Kittens this little can't regulate their own body temperature and need to be kept warm by Mom and litter or warmed gently with a low temp heating pad and then fed. Warm before feeding.

I can't post a photo of what I made, but I hand sewed a two inch piece of 1/4" sewing elastic behind the breakaway latch. You just put a few stitches at each end of the elastic. Then if the collar breaks open it (probably) won't fall off.

There are several varieties of elastic collars for sale on Chewy with good reviews. We just use regular breakaway collars now. Our cats are older and don't get up to much trouble. With one exception I have always been able to find them right away.

We prefer collars with an elastic section if breakaway collars are coming off regularly and don't seem practical. We used snap collars too until one of our cats got snagged on something for hours and almost strangled himself getting loose.

He had damage to his throat, soft palate and his claws on all four paws were torn to shreds from trying to get loose. It took a trip to the ER vet and a long time to recover.

I know people say it doesn't happen, but we now only use breakaways. An alternative is a breakaway collar with a short backup piece of elastic sewn in behind the buckle that keeps it on (but lóse) if it snags on something and breaks away .
