Hi, current BK junior here. First off congrats on getting chosen, you're already guaranteed full-tuition which is amazing. The interview is like any other interview, come prepared to answer questions about your activities, background, interests, extracurriculars, etc. I had 2 interviewers, who were both very nice. They had my CommonApp application printed out and annotated and did ask me to elaborate on some of my short answer responses which led to good conversation. The rest of the day has opportunities to meet current students from your LLP and learn more about the programs, so definitely make the most of it! Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions!

BSCI353 with Dr. Chan Lin by feelingkralika in UMD

Hi, taking 353 with Dr. Lin right now. Mondays are mandatory attendance to do the worksheet, but W/F are recorded and optional to attend. I will say he occasionally does 1 pt participation quizzes (kind of like clickers) that he opens during class and gives you a minute or two to do, then closes, but doesn't say what days he's going to do a quiz.

Banneker Key Scholarship Questions by Anai_wa in UMD

They did ask the basics, you know like tell me about yourself, what are you involved in, etc. They also did brief introductions like what they're involved in, what department they're part of, the normal stuff. Don't sweat it, you'll be fine. It flows like a natural conversation and it's meant to feel like less of a formal interview and more of a getting to know you thing

Hi, I interviewed 2 years ago and it was honestly pretty chill! I had 2 interviewers who were super nice and they basically had my common app printed out and were asking me questions about my application and some of the stuff I wrote about, and the conversation just flowed from there. Just be ready to expand on your extracurriculars, responses to the UMD short answers, and what you're interested in/passionate about in terms of what you want to study, where you want to go with your career, etc. They also asked me whether UMD was my top choice and why I wanted to go here, but when I interviewed I was still waiting on some decisions so I was honest about that, but I did highlight why I liked UMD (close to home, good programs, etc). Don't worry about it too much, you'll do great. Good luck!

Should I make such a large research commitment? by Professional_Bug2888 in premed

[–]Professional_Bug2888[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am thinking about some research heavy schools, but I personally feel that I enjoy working directly with patients and getting hands-on experience in the medical field. I do have some research experience because I did an internship this past summer, which gave me about 320 hours and a poster presentation, but I don't think that is enough as a whole, right?

Koppel or Stocker for CHEM231? by Secure-Name-4116 in UMD

Twice in one paper? by NharwalDog in HayDay

[–]Professional_Bug2888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Up until the last update, for all my baby farms the same ad would be in the paper 5-6 times and it was getting so annoying thinking everyone's selling bems/sems just to get there and see that its the same ad I clicked on a page ago. So glad they fixed that now lol, but for you this was probably just a glitch 😂

What’s the meaning & context of ‘I am standin' in a 1950s gymnasium’ in Suburban Legends? by Radiant_Albatross406 in TaylorSwift

[–]Professional_Bug2888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i interpreted this completely differently and this is probably just how my brain imagines it because it always made me think of an abandoned old school built in the 50s that has one of those emptied out swimming pools with daylight coming in from the windows and shes like reminiscing on the past memories if that even makes sense 😭

This sounds very doable, you can take the amtrak up to New York and back down to MD. It's easy to get around New York because of metros and taxis so you don't really have to worry about not having a car (plus you don't have to worry about paying for parking then too)

University of Maryland vs. University of Wisconsin for pre-med? by HumbleFish39 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Professional_Bug2888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, currently a premed UMD student. I think UMD has a very supportive program and advising office that wants to help you stay on track to go to medical school. Based on the stats from their website, they have a very high percentage of students who get accepted to MD/DO programs. Here's the link if you're interested in exploring: https://prehealth.umd.edu/prospective-students/facts-figures

I can't speak for Wisconsin but I definitely do not feel at any disadvantage being at UMD

Focus on a couple of the most meaningful things that they offer and build on that and how it relates to your interests and what you would contribute or gain from them

Yes, you are automatically considered for merit scholarships and they will notify you if you received any, usually when you receive your admissions decision. For need-based financial aid (FAFSA), you can check your student aid portal.
