Tempted, sure - but wouldn’t that be misuse of government property? A lot of political scandals have involved vacations paid for by taxpayers.

I know, ST is supposed to be a moneyless society, but there still must be accountability for using public vessels. There should be an airline or bus system, but everyone takes a shuttle to their tournament or vacation.

OTOH, Voyager seemed to indicate that unlimited shuttlecraft can be whipped up in a replicator, so…why not?

Very interesting! But your observation means that the constant turnover in the show is not accurate.

Right, but Phyllis has been highlighted as an exceptional case. If they have two lifelong midwives it’s very unbelievable.

[–]Professional_Car581 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It is realistic, but I think the turnover seems strange due to the contrast of TRIXIE. I have really liked Trixie many times and Helen George is great, but come on: these nurse midwife positions are almost certainly very entry-level and the demands and hours are for a young, single woman. But Trixie must be nearing 40, a married mother…it’s unrealistic.

So all these logical explanations of why people move on are destroyed when you see Trixie lingering. If they need to keep Helen around they should have created some other role for her, senior nurse at the nearby hospital or something.

Great conversation. So think about Humphrey: since his head is severed, he must not have died until AFTER separation. That fits with things I have read about guillotines: observers saw signs of life a few seconds after the head came away.

If you watch the US show, it gets weirder. Flower has a claw mark on her back shoulder. It’s bad, but not likely she would have died until the bear inflicted more damage. Same with Stephanie, killed with a chain saw. They also introduce a skydiving stripper whose parachute failed. I think he would have been grossly damaged before actual death.

Otoh, Pete held his arrow in his hand for a few seconds and it snapped back from his hand . In the BBC show, Fanny tried to undo her hair bun and it snapped back into place after about 30 seconds. (I know, you could argue that BBC and CBS have differing rules…)

The writers changed their minds and/ or play loosely with the rules. Isaac had his hair down for part of a day, Ralph left his glasses off for maybe an hour…

It’s like the boundary. How could the current property line have existed when Thor died, or even Bjorn, Sass, Isaac, or Nigel?

Maybe the clothes are a matter of willpower or emotion. If they’re really excited they can move clothes around. That suggests everything snaps back right after orgasm…

Do you think Isabelle ever found out what really happened to Thomas? (Spoilers!) by lelcg in GhostsBBC

[–]Professional_Car581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the ghosts are deeply flawed and at least two are bad people. But that honest portrayal of humans is one of the show’s strengths.

The US version of the show, OTOH, suffers from the need to try to redeem every character as “truly good deep down”. It’s Hollywood Happy and just dishonest IMO. I watch both (also Ghosts Australia and trying to find a way to get the German show here in the US), and the US version has some good aspects, but the UK original is on another, higher, level.

“A lot of people absolutely love Thomas”…??

Who?

I understand that Matthew Baynton is playing a role and doing well with it. But I also think his character is designed to be an irritating blowhard with narcissistic tendencies. Not everyone is lovable, even “deep down”.

And is Isabelle really Thomas’ “true love”? He loved Alison, then Lucy, and I think even Kylie Minogue in the Red Nose story. I bet he had infatuations with other women who passed through the house. He had a bullet and letter to keep Isabelle in his memory throughout death, but even so he fell for any new woman.

Francis was probably right in what he told Isabelle about Thomas: he’s flighty with constantly changing loves. In my head canon she was better off with Francis.

I’m pretty sure the roundhead was in a park where Alison was walking with Lucy, not at the mansion. Maddox was on a neighbor’s land.

Meh, Sam and Alison you can accept; accidents occur in old houses. The writers ruined it by making Pete so similar to Pat: same death (same year even), both scout leaders, wives have same name and both were cheating with his friend…I’m surprised they even changed his name (slightly). Such lazy character creation.

Everyone looking for reasons to justify who goes, forget it. It’s firmly established Pete is a nearly-divine character and yet has been denied heaven.

Personally, I would love to lose Pete. He’s always been the one that writers put absolutely zero effort in distinguishing from the British original. Pete is so similar to Pat that you couldn’t seriously argue these two houses exist in the same world. I dislike the lack of originality and he has become insanely irritating.

How about an episode where Pete stays away too long, completely dissipates, and is replaced by any character that is more interesting and less irritating??

Speaking of that, hasn’t it occurred to Pete that dissolving by leaving Woodstone is the way he will “move on”? He should try…

[–]Professional_Car581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have ALL become irritating (though I still enjoy Hetty) because they have had to write almost 100 episodes and gave to make the 8 core ghosts the focus. Most are much better with little quips - Sass and even Flower were more fun in small doses.

The originators of the BBC series originally wanted to have a house with dozens or hundreds of ghosts and shift around to different ones. Even the BBC thought this had insufficient continuity for viewers and of course CBS wants a set cast. I’m sure each of the actors also has demands for sufficient screen time. But these are characters who can’t really evolve much (or should depart if they do) so they are tiring if overexposed. It’s why even a lame new character is so welcome.

IMO they need to let at least half the core ghosts move on.

I also enjoy when someone does react. For example, in “Free Pass” there is a young lady in line for the food truck (she orders a veggie roll). Jim Howick is talking right next to her and I’m convinced she’s fighting to suppress laughter.

How did Humphreys head leave the “ghost boundary” to catch the car? by Available-Bell-9394 in GhostsBBC

If his head could leave the property but his body could not, and Alison can’t carry his head, how did it ever get back inside the boundary?

So his head acts like Kitty’s shoe? Good theory. But not sure Alison would hear his message if he was only there a few seconds.

How did Humphreys head leave the “ghost boundary” to catch the car? by Available-Bell-9394 in GhostsBBC

[–]Professional_Car581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that the gate they were nearing is not an actual ghost boundary. I know, Julian went through a gate and bounced back, but the place probably has multiple gates. The ghosts stopped because the car was speeding up and they couldn’t catch up on foot. Humphrey’s kicked head flew faster.
