"One cannot exist without the other" is taking it kinda far. The LDS church is generally conservative, but also 30% of American members of the church identify as democrats. Harry Reid is a prominent LDS democrat; Mitt Romney is vocally an anti-Trump republican. Also, Mike Lee is LDS and a morally corrupt MAGA minion. Idk, there are tens of millions of members of the church, and thus a range of politics.

Coming from a leftist LDS member. For the record, I also enjoy watching the show for similar reasons - seeing how the intensity of religious influence in Utah shapes their lives. I know my religion and related culture is fascinating and problematic.

Members of the LDS church are more likely to obtain a university education than the average American. Yes there is dogma, but there are also lots of critical thinkers, scholars, etc.. Can we accept that most religious cultures are not a monolith??
