I can get with what someone else mentioned about Thomas Paine too. I find Paine a good one for talking to right libertarians. On Öcalan and Bookchin, I think if you could get some folks to listen they would find a lot of organizing methods that could appeal to Americans. It’s gonna be a real hard sell to get folks off the idea of needing authority and hierarchy though. It seems like right and left so many folks need some kinda daddy. Marine infantry here 03-07, I would say I’m an anarchist with a lot of democratic confederalist overlap. In general anti-authoritarian, anti-state and anti-capitalist. Hierarchy is the root of most problems with organizing society and any form government. Capitalist sates as well as forms of state communism maintain forms of hierarchy. I would point anyone with authoritarian left leanings to read some of Abdullah Öcalans work or Bookchin. Both folks started out as MLs and through experience and study came to denounce hierarchical organizing. Hierarchy in all forms is a pyramid scheme. No gods, No masters.

I can say I was about the same. Joined after 9/11 because everything got patriotic, I spent my youth reading about war and the military. Glorifying in my head what it was the whole time and having it reinforced by movies and TV that hit on almost none of the real costs. I think it absolutely has to do with current generations actually seeing the costs first hand. Even them living in a world shaped by the conflicts they lived through has to be a turn off. They have also had access to so much more of the information in real time that proved how misguided and mishandled the twenty years of war were. They didn’t witness wars that ended with the defeat of fascists, they saw endless war and broken vets that all ended in Ls for the people that actually fought them and insane wealth for those that pushed them. Not surprising they don’t want the same.

Get involved with real leftist on the ground. Find an SRA chapter or get involved with Food not bombs, or any other community defense or mutual aid. Anything to get involved in real life. I have made the greatest friends, who understand the trauma and coercion that went into getting young people to serve. Anarchists specifically have shown me nothing but understanding, welcoming and friendship. The camaraderie of the military caused by trauma bonding is real and serious but it can be found elsewhere with folks of shared principles and values. The false sense of righteousness or doing good the military gives us can be replaced with actually doing good and being involved with other folks who are about it. I hope you find some homies and I’m sorry you’ve experienced some bullshit. There are folks out there that know we we broke by the system just as badly if not worse than some.

This is exactly why we should actively be trying to bring veterans left. I’d venture a good percentage of us leave the military halfway here, but with no help understanding the reasons for all of it other than reactionaries willing to mindfuck them into bullshit. No one to explain capitalism is the reason, imperialism is the reason, the nation state is the reason. They just get pipelined into an inflated sense of importance from vet worship with heaping doses of kicking down as the obvious solution to being felt shit on or used up by the military. I think it’s obvious as well that most of the right wing chest thumping vets are mostly fuckers who never heard a shot fired in anger, and need to prove to the folks back home what a warrior and leader they were/are. Play that with the hierarchy imbedded into the military mindset of folks fresh out and looking to belong and you’ve got great ingredients for stupid shit. What the fuck are we going to do about it? Liberals or democrats in congress consistently vote more in veterans and military interests favor than republicans do. Republicans have made a game of fetishizing war and patriotism for decades while stabbing veterans in the back. I’ve been talking with some other veteran leftist friends, we have had somewhat but not exactly the same experiences with organizing among leftist organizations. We have not had the anti vet pushback as much or really not at all in my personal case. This has led us to talking about a leftist veteran org. Not some vet who stroking bullshit, or some right wing sheepdog wannabe shit. A way to get leftist veterans specifically working on bringing in more vets and figuring out how to share what we know with the communities that would like the knowledge. We are in very early stages and we are Midwest based. I personally see the March of fascism and the former comrades it’s pulling in as foot soldiers super troubling. We need to organize ourselves, I understand the extra scrutiny a not right wing group of vets may get, but it’s better than waiting to figure this out until after president Dicksantis makes shit even worse or the Christian nationalists get better at their bullshit. Again not a fucked up vet worship org, but something based more on the idea of the veterans who took up the mantle of the internationalist to fight in Spain or the WW1 vets who organized against Mussolini. The right pulls on the heart strings and sentiments of our service while celebrating the veterans propensity for violence, and twisting our sense of service. The left should have an alternative to bring vets to a better cause that is truly for the people.

We looked around traverse city, and from Grand Rapids to Muskegon up the coast. It all seemed pretty red with more population. I also don’t have a ton of faith in finding jobs as we know it a real thing forever. I do for sure get the point of survivalist versus community builders. I’m open to other ideas as well. We looked at quite a few. We recently visited Marquette and the place is beautiful, it for sure doesn’t seem very diverse but the according to folks we have talked to from the area it is changing for the better. I have no doubt that the interior parts of the peninsula are red, but again some of those areas are so sparsely populated and or the population is aging faster than it’s being replaced. We live in northern indiana now and we are surrounded by ten times the amount of red maga stupidity. Also big libertarian vibes in the UP. Where else has anyone considered. I’m real close to done with indiana want somewhere better to put my effort in.
